Question for students in nursing school, or students taking pre reqs to get in it.

Published

Hello, i am currently an 11th grader, and i am making my schedule for my senior year. I have the option of taking Chemistry, or Anatomy, I was wondering what course you think i should take to give me a jump start on my pre reqs for nuring school. I think i would struggle more with chem, but if you had to pick which one do you think would give me a "jump start" better. Thanks!!!!!!

I'd have to agree with hpygrl01 on this one...I would have had a terribly difficult time in A&P 1 without having had chemistry. It may or may not be required, but it certainly helps a ton...especially with things like the dreaded Kreb's cycle...still gives me the creeps!!

I think I would talk to the advisor at the college you are planning to attend. A year ago I would have suggested Chemistry, but while I was in nursing school it was changed that we no longer needed Chemistry, so before I took it I would make sure that you need it because you will always need anatomy.

Stacy, that is my point exactly. Why take a class that may not be needed. Check with the schools that you are interested in to see if it is even required. Having a sound foundation of AP is absolutely necessary in nursing school even pass pre-reqs. When you get to health assessment the first semester in nursing school, you will need to call upon your knowledge of Antomy, not chemsitry.

I would like to agree with whats being said here. Find the school you want to go to and some backup schools, then decide what should be taken from there. For mine, I have to do human anatomy, human physiology, microbiology, and chemistry for my main science classes. That being said, anatomy is a very difficult subject for some--it was for me. I still need to take chemistry though, now with hearing others on here, I wish I would have taken chemistry first! :) I also wish I would have known what I wanted to do in high school like you so that I could've taken some of the classes that I needed there instead of paying for them!

When I was in eleventh grade in 2005 I took Chemistry, when I became a senior I took AP to give me a jump start. I just wish I didn't have that bad case of senioritis which caused me to skip a whole semester of AP. Anyway Both classes won't hurt, just take one at a time. Good luck !

I would check what the school you want to go to says. My school accepts high school chem if you get a B or better, so it may mean 1 less class needed. however it does not accept anatomy .
