Hi, I'm just taking science prerequisites (anatomy, physio, microbio) right now but I noticed that there are quite a few students in my prereq classes that wear medical style uniforms to class. Are they working in the medical field already at like a lower entry level? Like for example I see some students have those shirts with the cute teddy bear decorations (like the kind I see medical assistants at the physicians office wear), and I also see some wear blue medical uniform (blue shirt and blue pants.) My question is are these students already working as LVN, CNA or something?
I want to be a nurse, but spent many years working in the restaurant biz, as a manager I wouldn't be too impressed to see a Chef arrive at work wearing his whites, after riding the dirty subway and walking the filthy NY streets.
So why do I see many nurses on subways wearing srubs and on the street... isn't this unhygienic. Shouldn't these people change upon arrival at work..hence the name scrubs..
I'm confused....
You can not tell by what a person is wearing!!! However, when I was in nursing school we had a teacher that said she would pull us by our shirt collar if she was us in class or public in our scrubs. She was a big infection control nurse and said not one should wear scrubs outside of the hospital.

Rereading your post has prompted a comment:
The primary concern is not for bringing stuff INTO the hospital, it's for bringing the nasties OUT into the community. The bad bugs are already in the hospital.
Ewwwww at wearing scrubs outside of the hospital. The nurses I work with are appauled at this post (and are literally reading the answers to this thread over my shoulder). They can't believe people would be wearing such contaminated clothing out in the classrooms. Scrubs are definitely to be worn solely when you're in the situation where you need to be wearing them. Nurses here won't even get into their car wearing their scrubs after work.
I don't think anyone would look down on you or anything if you wore them. Just don't flash them off...there are a few people who like to do that to let everyone know they have some background in a hospital/clinic...Personally, as a new nursing student, I enjoy seeing people in their scrubs in class. This will sound so so corny, but it actually inspires me a little. It's hard to explain, but I think I like seeing them in scrubs (other than NS uniform) because I know i REALLY REALLY want to be there one day. It keeps me focused.
I thought I was the only one that secretly was inspired by seeing the scrubs in my class too. LOL. But, I was wondering too that when I saw them in my prereq classes, I wasn't sure if they were already LPNs or LVNs. I also found out that some students in my class who were wearing those scrubs were already in the school's nursing program, and these prereq classes are apart of their schedule of classes they need to take. I'm taking my prereq courses to get into an Accelerated BSN program, not getting an ADN like most of them who are wearing their scrubs are working towards.

A few in my A&P I class wear scrubs. I have asked a couple and they both are CNA's. Hope this helps!
