Question: Risk Manager Job Duties - This is my new job

Hi
I know that this is the quality forum, however there isn't anything for "risk management". It seems to me that quality and risk are very closely related.
Anyways, I just want to know if anyone on here also performs risk management duties (I have seen where the quality & risk manager is the same person).
If you were just starting out in risk management - what would be the first thing you would do to understand the expectations of the job???
How do you prioritize your day???
I have a job description - but it is really "wordy". I think from what I know about it - I will like it. I just want a good start. Anyone willing to share?

This post is fine for this forum. But I would also post in the Management forum. I don't have too much experience in this area, but when I think of risk management, the first thing that comes to mind is patient safety.

So I would definitely focus on looking at falls, medication/medical errors, etc. I would then look at satisfaction data to see if there's some kind of link (i.e. lack of callbell response, etc.)

Does your hospital/facility have a risk management/assessment policy folder? Ours comes under Health and safety but it could be different in the US.Start there and read up on the policies already in place.from there you can identify an shortcomings in the system that need addressing.

Yes quality and risk management are closely connected.

Several suggestions, network with the company that covers your hospital for malpractice insurance.

Next see if there are any local risk management association available to join.

Third, meet with the quality manager.

Last set up a database to track risk issues.

I started in risk management 3 months ago. I deal with clinical issues only. I start my day off by looking for new entries in our occurence reporting system. If there's something urgent to investigate, I'll look at it briefly. If not, I move on to my folder where I place items in order of priority: current investigations, calls to be made, etc. Of course, if there's a sentinel event (SE), everything else gets pushed to the side to deal with the SE.

This is, indeed, interesting work. My brain is continuously working!

My current position is Clinical Quality Manager. I review all reported events through our event reporting system. I work in a large academic medical center and we have several disease specific clinical quality managers. In our halath system, Risk Management is in our legal department. I also focus on adverse events, root cause and common cause analysis, sentinal events, and accreditation requirements. I've been a nurse for 14 years and this is by far my favorite position as a nurse. I am a fcailitator assisting with process improvement. Creating a "Just Culture" that holds staff accountable without blame is my quest as a nurse. There are severl leading organizations onthe topic of quality and patient safety, National Quality Forum, Institute for Health Care Improvement, The JOint commission, and ARHQ. There is a national cerification that many individuals seek while working in the field, CPHQ.

I hope this gave you a few leads.....it is a whole different world. We make a huge difference in patient care.

I just accepted a position in a LTC for Risk Management..whole new area for me..will be starting this month..am really not sure what the job entails nor how busy it will be as this facility is small..time will tell

I work in a small medical center so I share duties of risk management/QA/QI with our CNO for our hospital. She handles the hospital and clinic issues while I handle the LTC and AL issues. This works great since we have different backgrounds.

We handle things that happen, such as medication errors and falls, but we also have a monthly QI meeting where we address quality indicators and issues we've had problems with in the past and follow them pretty closely.
