Hello All.
I accepted a Night Time Position at a State Mental Health Facility and I start February 18, 2013. I have seen that they have had several other open postions posted on the website. My goal is to work the day shift, for my sanity and ease of childcare. When or How or Who should I ask about switching to Day Shift when a position becomes open??
Thank you!!

You would need to ask Human Resources or your manager the policy with that. It's not the same everywhere. Typically, you just wait until the position is available and apply as an internal applicant. Some places have policies about how long after your hired you can change positions. In our facility, we can change shifts whenever one opens up but we cannot change floors/area for at least six months.
Should I go ahead and ask before I start or ask after I begin to work??

I would start the job, and mention to your nurse manager you would be interested in days. Sometimes they want you to orient on nights. I wouldn't turn the position down. Start, orient and put yourself on the list to move to days. I did this when I started out. I worked nights maybe 7 months then days. Hope this helps
How long was it after you started that you mentioned being interested in Day Shift??

It would be reasonable to ask to be placed on day shift rotation list after you finish your orientation.
Great thanx!! Till then I can inquire subtly on the process!

I'd be up front from day one. You certainly can say you're thankful/excited for the new job opportunity and would like to be considered for a day position if one opens up. I hire people all the time who take whatever open shift I have full knowing they want a different shift if one becomes available.
I will call today and ask them about their policies! Thank you for the reply it has been really helpful!
