Question regarding per diem pay for CNAs?

Published

At the hospital I work at, CNAs do not get any extra pay for working per diem or being in the multi site float pool. However, nurses who work per diem or in the multi site float pool make a substantial amount of extra money for doing so. I don't understand how that happens. I thought all per diem staff was supposed to get at least a little bit of a pay increase because they get no benefits. What do you think about it? I've never heard of such a thing before!

CNA dose not equal RN. An RN can do a CNA"s job but CNA can't do RN"s job

When I worked Hospital only nurses were entitled to incentive pay for per diem status. Just like only nurses had clinical ladder, accelerated benefit rates and more comprehensive education & tuition reimbursement.

I've worked many facilities/companies where there is zero bonus pay for being per diem except you had less obligation for mandated scheduling and mandated weekends/holidays. Full time employees had a more complex method to secure PTO/vacation scheduling, mandated 2 weekends of 2 weekend days a month (depending on department) plus 50% of winter and 50% of summer holidays as condition of employment.

It's not uncommon for more incentives for licensed vs unlicensed staff in a hospital. When I was a tech the same base rate for full time, part time or per diem. Full time got company paid benefits for self regardless of title, part time had partial company/part employee benefits for self, per diem could earn up to 1 PTO (8 h) per quarter if they fulfilled departmental scheduling/working/call-out coverage guidelines

Perhaps the RNs are under a union which negotiated those terms, and the CNAs aren't unionized?
