Hi all, I am new to the forum.:) I am interested in the subject of competencies/clinical skills, and am doing a short project on them. I have been doing some netsurfing, but not having much luck finding what I am specifically looking for. So far, all the information I have found has been about generalised competence to practise once a nurse is registered. What I am interested in are "extra", practical stuff, like learning venepuncture and IV cannulation, ALS skills, peri-suturing. The kind of skills that a nurse learns as s/he progresses from novice to experienced. Any thoughts on where I can find more information about these sort of clinical skills? I appreciate any help people feel able to give me. :)

You might want to try Clinical psychomotor skills : assessment tools for nursing students by Joanne Tollefson.
It has a lot of the nursing skills/clinical skills competency in it.
E.g. COMPETENCT: Aseptic technique p1
COMPETENCY: Aseptic technique p2
COMPETENCY: Aseptic technique p3
COMPETENCY: Aseptic technique p4
I know the book has the following competencies: TPR, BP measurement, aseptic technique, resp and cardiovascular assessment, blood glucose measurement, dry dressing technique, assisting w/elimination, hygiene care and mental status assessment. I can’t remember the other competencies, but there is definitely a lot more.
Hope this helps.

I agree with blue eyes.
I am a first year RN student and we have to get things/clinical skills marked off out of our Tollefson when we go on clinical. This is a requirement of our nursing degree. There are 56 different clinical skills clearly explaned in it and it also has the ANCI competencies listed in the back. on the page where each skill is listed the number for the competencie(sp?) is listed as well so it can be traced back to the ANCI competencies.

You could try using google's scholar search engine (scholar.google.com - it uses a database of journals, and therefore narrows the search). I got 14,000 hits with "nursing competency", but you could probably get more relevant sites with more search terms.
Good luck!
Hi guys; thanks for the information. Tollofson sounds to be undergraduate competencies?? I am looking more for the postgraduate type of "extra" competencies. I will try the scholar search on google - did not know about it. Thanks. :)
Scholar google is fantastic - glad I could share it with you!

ACCCN (Australian College of Critical Care Nuses) has a booklet outlining the competencies for working in ICU.

If you are looking for post registration competencies that would be a good place to start.

Tina,
I have just completed my degree at USQ and you will find that you never will ever get all those competencies marked off. They use it to make sure you somplete the clinical objectives that are set for that placement marked off.
Good luck with rest of degree!!
