Question about "W"s on your record, urgent please

I just asked someone who is a prof and she thinks that if it is 1 or 2 over the course of years then it probably wouldn't affect you but if your transcript is loaded then it may be perceived as a sign as to how you handle classes. That if you feel threatened by the material then you just withdraw rather than sticking it out to the end.

That goofs me up as I have dropped Stats twice!!!

Can you call an admissions person and ask the question?

The person I asked is a professor so she really doesn't know for sure. I think it could be preceived 2 ways, negatively like the person I asked said but could also be positive in the fact that perhaps the semester you are withdrawing from a particular course you are taking in conjunction with more difficult courses that are more career related (i.e. maybe you were taking A&P at the same time). Then perhaps it would show that you wisely withdrew to concentrate on the more difficult course and did well in that class, KWIM?

Thank you Karen,

I got an email from the counselor, and she said that Ws dont affect your GPA and she said not to worry, but you know I wonder if they'd prefer students with no Ws than someone who has Ws, if you know what I mean.

Are there any current nursing students who got accepted into nursing programs with any Ws, especially in CA area,

Explain why you withdrew from your course(s), some programs may ask you for this. But if they don't, it's better to "protect" yourself.

I have 5 "Ws" on my transcript. Whenever I do not care for a professor's style of teaching, I drop the class and take it with another instructor.

I figure I'm paying for quality teaching. I'm not going to pay for a crappy instructor or one with a bad attitude.

I have all As following the Ws. I was accepted into my RN program on the first attempt and did fine.

wow she couldn't of said it any better. i agree-if i don't like the way a teacher is teaching like reading from the book i drop. i have a couple of "w's" on mine as well. you are paying for it..but i wouldn't tell a prospective nursing school that reason(didn't like the teacher)!! the issues of w's have never came up and why should they?

Some colleges see W's as GPA massaging.........professors might not know anything about it since its the admissions board that usually makes that determination.

I have a lot of W's on my transcript from when I attempted college at 17. My last 2 semesters have been 4.0 so apparently my college looked at how I was doing recently more so than so many years ago.

I, too, have several W's on my transcript for various reasons over the last 9 years, all of which were replaced with A's. My overall GPA is very good and I scored high on the NET. So, evidently the ABSN program I have been accepted to doesn't seem to mind the W's! I would call the admissons counselor at the school you want to apply to and ask, just to be safe.

1 or 2 I don't think is bad.

But, I had one W on my transcript for A&P, I dropped after 4 weeks after being in the hospital for a week. Impossible to catch up being gone for 2 weeks of classes (my dr hadn't released me to work or school, couldn't drive). Applied to NS with NO wait list. They tell me I have a spot then I get a call 2 days before classes start to tell me that since I have a W on my transcript I cannot attend classes. No one who has withdrawn from any class for any reason is allowed to attend clinicals. Didn't matter if I had shown them dr's notes - they still would not let me attend.

I would definitely check with the NS to see if you're allowed in with a W on your transcript. You don't want to go through all the work I did only to be shown the door days before the start of school.
