Question from patient

Published

Hi, I'm a patient, not a nurse. I had cataract surgery 2 days ago (I'm younger than normal age for cataract surgery - in my 50s). The nurse who was in charge of putting drops in my eyes and marking my eye before surgery was older than I am, I would say she was at least 62 (just stating this for reference purposes since I personally believe she should retire). When you have cataract surgery, you are normally asked several times which eye is being operated on. Well when she asked me which eye I was having surgery on I said "left" (I had my right eye done at this surgical center 6 weeks before) after which she took her marker and promptly started marking my right eye! I said "um that's not the eye" and she then rubbed off the marker, said "oops" and then started marking my left eye while saying "it's so confusing to know which eye is the person's left eye since when you're looking at someone their left eye is the right eye to you" or something like that. I was out of it from lack of sleep, but the more I think of it the more angry I get. I also think she didn't put enough anesthetic drops in my eye since I had some pain during the surgery this time and none the first time when a nurse in his 20s put the drops in my eye before that surgery. Was this an acceptable thing for her to do and say? Just wondering if I'm overreacting or not (and this surgery center also failed to call in my car service for the surgery since I didn't have a ride, something they didn't fail to do the first time).
