question about oakland university second degree program gpa

Published

Hi, question about the bolded term below, copied directly from the oakland university second degree flyer:

2. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0, with a minimum grade of 2.5 in each of the following courses: BIO 111, BIO 121, CHM 104, CHM 201, and PSY 100.

What does this mean? Does my overall undergraduate gpa have to be above a 3.0 OR does my prerequisite overall gpa have to be above a 3.0?

the difference matters a lot :)

thanks!!

What ever happened. Did you get in? I have 3 b-, 1 A+ and 1 A and just finished my formal interview. I am unsure of what to do and I need to save money not spend it if I do not have too.....argh! I feel overwhelmed....do you have any advice?

Hey,

I did get in. I start in May. You had to go to the formal interview? That was waived for me and my GPA was not so great. I only had a 3.2! I guess they did change the requirements? I heard they were changing things. Is it still a rolling admission?

Well, I guess there is hope for me with a lower GPA. I heard they were interviewing people because some of the applicants were not up to par in regards to appearance/hygiene/communication....also, apparently some people were paying people to write their essays, so now they sit you in a room for 15 minutes and you have to answer a question they give you. My interview went really well and I can definitely write....but just nervous about getting in.....I am probably going to retake 2 classes just in case I do not get in Fall 2009.

The thing is I feel that they did change the way they accept applicants since my orientation in January.....I do not want to make a big stink about it because then I probably will not get in for being so obnoxious but I was under the impression that if I do not get into Fall 2009 then I would be in Jan 2010. Who knows?!?! I do think it is rolling admissions still because they are always accepting applications.

Congrats to you and I wish you the best of luck.

Oh wow! That is crazy about the apperance and stuff! The essay was sooo easy and I am not the best writter. I am better at science and test taking then writting, however i did write me essay and it was easy. Its just about yourself ya know? Anyway I am sure you will get in. I wanted winter and I got in the spring so you are ok.

I sure hope they aren't judging people based on their appearance. I didn't know that having good looks meant you were smart enough to become a nurse. I can understand communication because it is essential that you have adequate skills so you can communicate with patients....but appearance? To think I was actually thinking about OU as a contender for my BSN...If this is true, I will look elsewhere!

I don't think they were judging people by looks and attractiveness but perhaps for good general hygiene and grooming? I totally think it's wrong to admit based on attractiveness, but in public health facilities I believe it's important to maintain a certain standard of personal cleanliness for both coworkers and patients' sakes....

If you show up to the interview and haven't showered in a week and have super long acrylic nails (which impair your ability to perform tasks and are a breeding ground for bacteria-- so gross don't even get me started---I always think of the cashier at my old grocery store with 3 inch talons who can't even properly count out change because her nails get in the way. If they're too long to hold a pen or perform your job functions then they are a serious problem) or other poor personal hygiene issues that could be a problem, and I could see how the school could take that into consideration. If you show up that way to an interview, then the school would likely assume you would maintain that same poor personal grooming during the program.

If you aren't willing to commit to good personal grooming, it becomes an issue for future patients while you're in school and perhaps the school doesn't want to take the risk/ gain a reputation of having unclean students. I don't know that was just a thought. Perhaps the poster who originally stated that could clarify more on it as I am curious about what was meant too:D

Serenity-- if you're offput by Oakland for your BSN we'd always love to have you over at Wayne...:wink2:

As a former licensed nail technician, I completely agree with you about the long acrylic nails or long natural nails....there comes a point where it is not possible to keep those bad boys properly clean....not to mention functional....I won't even begin to tell you about what I have come across while giving manicures or doing a re-balance......science fiction or science experiment, you decide! LMAO:rolleyes:

I agree with having good personal hygiene practices, but I am more concerned with the "appearance" factor than anything else...

As for Wayne State....they are on my list of potentials....I have 18 months to decide. :D

Oakland only bases the gpa on the five classes. The minimum is 3.0. You can have 2.5's a class, but your overall of the five classes has to be 3.0 and up.

Overall undergraduate doesn't matter.

I know this is an old old thread, but I've got a question about this. Does this mean that they don't even look at your first degree's GPA? They only look at applicants based on their pre-req GPA?

Ted,

They do. They look how much your grades improved but overall only the pre reqs matter. If your undergrad gpa was low just make sure you do well in all your sciences and your interview. You won't get rejected just based on your old gpa.

Sounds good to me! Just weird, because it seems like they would get A LOT of potential applicants if that's the only criteria they base acceptions/rejections on.

Well, my first degree's GPA was a pitiful 2.3......however, the five pre-regs were like 3.8. It had also been 10 years since I had gotten my first degree. Anyway, I got in, no problem. I think now there is quite a waiting list from what I understand?

I have a BS in Electrical Engineering, a pretty tough degree to acquire, and my GPA was a 2.63 overall. However, if you look at my transcript, I start off around a 3.0 average, then I dip in the middle, and then in my core classes I have a high 3.5+ average, including when I'm taking 17 credits at a time. In the middle i was only taking 6 or so at a time.

All of my prerequisites for this degree are a 4.0. I was accepted into the program and start fall 2010.
