Question on lab. Test

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A Person has been complaining of feeling tired, having no energy and seems to be putting on weight steadily. Doctor orders lab work for TSH, WBC, Hemoglobin, and lytes. He also orders an in and out catheter for a urine sample.

I understand that Dr. Order TSH lab test as patient is putting on wt. and it could be because of increased secretion of TSH, hemoglobin test for tiredness but why he ordered WBC, lytes and urine test

Yeah I would have to say he ordered the wbc for the patients immune system to see if it is working correctly, and the lytes for his urine to see if maybe he is in kidney problems or bacteria is messing him up.

FYI questions are posted on forums when people have some doubt. Everyone knows the answer but sugestions from other members help to broaden your thoughts. It is sad to see experienced people like you post these comments and make other people feel bad rather than helping them.

FYI, many students post questions here looking for answers to homework questions when they should be doing the research themselves, and many members of the general public post questions asking for medical advice. Sometimes these students and members of the general public can be quite deceptive in their attempts to garner information. It is against the TOS to ask for medical advice here, and IMO, students should not seek to clarify their understanding by posting on an internet bulletin board. There are too many reliable sources of information for them, such as texts, web references, instructors, and peers, and with a little bit of effort, they can access these resources.

While some of our members don't seem to mind giving students information without requiring them to do the work for themselves, I do mind. I think it is a disservice to future nurses to just hand them information instead of asking them to work for it.

Therefore, what I said is true. If you are already a nurse, you should know this stuff. If you don't, and you just need to bone up a little, then read your texts, do some research, and if you still don't understand, then ask your question, but frame it in such a way that we know we aren't being asked to help with homework or for free medical advice.

OMG>............Really dude? This is not someone wanting a homework answer. They are just curious and wanting to learn why. You being in the medical profession of all people should know what it is like to want to learn. I know I ask all kinds of questions. Get over it and help the person understand.:uhoh3:

If you are a nurse, you should know this.

UMMM......... who ever said the op was a nurse? Could be a curious CNA

I am not in the medical profession. I am in the nursing profession. :nurse:

And please, let's stay on topic. I chose not to answer the poster's question, and I have explained why. Feel free to address the original question, but please note that I am disengaging from any further discussion about my posts. :)

When your pts need teaching and need questions answered, do you tell them to do the research and find out for themselves?

Why on earth do we have nursing instructors if these students should go seek out info themselves. Sure I agree they should do research, but still, there is nothing wrong with more experienced nurses teaching the younger ones. Nothing wrong with it at all!!!

Nursing and teaching go hand and hand.

When you sit down to take an exam, do you ask the instructor for the answer?

HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA...........so funny

I want to add a little information. Maybe its just an accident but the set up of that question is identical to the questions in my Clinical Biochemistry Review book for USMLE. However I may be wrong and it was just an accident.

And you know this....how, dude?

A lot of people come here and literally post their homework questions. It's pretty common, actually. I agree with not spoon-feeding these answers back to them. The way that the OP is phrased, and how vague it is ("a person," not "my patient," not "my family member") is a pretty big clue.

Actually I am a newgrad and working as a casual nurse in a nursing home, I realize that I am not confident like other nurses .so I asked the DOC of nursing home (vry nice lady)how to upgrade skills, gain confidence and she told me to go through some scenaios, read Dr.'s notes, lab test he presribes for residents and dicsuss/share, post my thoughts on this particular site, Now the routine is started and I am learning continuously.......this is my 2nd post (scenario) and............:icon_roll

Not only are you learning lab test, you're also learning how judgmental this board can be, aren't you?

I'm sorry for the responses you've received. I'll be glad to help in answering your questions, if I can.

Take care!
