hello:

i am stating school this sept for the lpn program. can anyone tell me how long it took to get a job after you graduated.

i have been doing some research on lpn jobs. i am finding most hospitals do not employ lpn. the nursing homes do.

also, is dutchess community the best place for the lpn to rn ?

appreciate any information.

very excited to start school this fall. have always wanted to be a nurse and i have a great opportunity that i am not passing up.

thanks

Well, I guess first I have to concentrate on taking these courses. I'm sure we'll get all the information we need from school. Or at least that is what I'm hoping to do..

Hey there neighbor...you can get a "job" as fast or as slow as you want...here is the thing...its rough being in LPN in New York...I was originally licensed in florida...born and raised a new yorker...BUT...Florida is one of those states where you have "options"...to work...you can do home health visits, jails, hospital, nursing homes, etc etc...now New York?...well...nursing homes, doctors offices, and few in between hospital positions and agency (with experience i recommend)...you have to do what you have to do...in new york you can;t be picky about your position...due to the limitations...its easy to run outta places to apply quickly...which can be frustrating..im not here to discourage but the jobs ARE out there the question is whether or not YOU want to take it...you will not find the "perfect" job...its hard as an lpn unless you want to take a very low salary and go work @ a doctors office...these things you will understand what im talking about once you go out there and begin your job search..you will know WHY certain positions are up for soooo long and WHY certain facilities are CONSTANTLY hiring..lol!...but business is business...and as an LPN take ALL opportunities out there to gain the experience! then my friend the best is AGENCY...(for me at least) you pick your own schedule..and yeah we always end up getting the short end of the stick as agency nurses but hey..it pays the bills and as an agency nurse you must roll with the punches and ALWAYS be cautious...hope that helped..take care...XoXo

Hi..

It's funny you say agency. I saw an add in the paper thru an agency. I was amazed on how much they are paying.

I think my plan is going to go for the RN.

My reason: I always wanted to work in the ER. And of course, since I am not in the medical field, that could change. I am going into a brand new world.

I just signed up to volunteer one day a week at the local nursing home. They are happy to have me. I want to get something before I start school. I need the visuals when studying.

I also heard working at the state hospital is good. Not sure if they employ LPN's but I will find out.

I am also going to try not to worry about the work right now. I really want to focus on getting good grades and passing the board.

I am excited and nervous at the same time.

I am just about ready for school. Waiting to see the final numbers on the amount of money I will get for school.

Thanks for you information.

What county are you in? I'm in Dutchess.

I am in Dutchess too...for now do not worry about the who's what and where's...when your in school..worry about PASSING your tests...you'll notice towards the end of the program its not about memorizing or being the best "student" nurse...to be honest just worry about passing the tests because everything else out here you'll learn out here...school is school..and reality is reality...and dont let the "RN'S' think your less of a person because you are an LPN..you will be a NURSE..whether it be LPN or RN...stay focused in your grades...everything will come together toward the end...being an LPN is not bad..but like i said its rough in New York...florida, texas is one of the few states where you can "function" as a full blown Nurse...to many stipulation in new york to the point where people get discouraged..but hey..life is life and you do what you have to do...i know many rn's who where lpn's first and are a few of the BEST nurses out there..so dont ever regret becoming an LPN first...good luck!!...XoXo

Thank you so much!

You are so right. I picked up the Kaplan NCLEX-PN for the heck of it. I want to make myself familiar with stuff. I couldn't believe I got some of the answers correct. I didn't know some of the words they used in asking questions, so I looked them up and figured out the answer. Some I couldn't get for the life of me. That is where school comes in.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will walk with my head high. As I WILL be a Nurse!. I am determined to be one and will try to be a very caring Nurse. I am so ready to go to school. I know it will be hard, as I am a little nervous. But my mate here is A++ in Math. So I can get help there. He also loves science, so he can help with that. The rest is on me.

I might have a little part-time job "watching" someone's mother in one of the Nursing Homes in this county. They will pay me just to sit with her, make sure she eats her dinner. If she needs anything call the Nurse, stuff like that. I think it will be great experience for me in many ways.

Thanks neighbor for your kindness and your words of reality.

You have a great day!!!!:balloons:

Hi there! I know this is an older thread...but I just came across it as I was searching for Dutchess Boces. I will be starting school there in 2 weeks (Jan 22nd) & was wondering how you guys are finding things there? Is it very difficult? Any advice would be so appreciated. Thank you!!!

hello:

welcome to cti boces. one of the most important things. don't be absent!!!!!! whatever appointments you have.. you must do after school. there are only 1000 hours in this program and if you don't have enough hours and if you are getting a loan.. you will not be alloted the loan money. i have not been absent thus so far, i started in sept. plus there are snow days, and snow delays.. so.. the best advise is don't be absent>

if you are going full time... working full time is certainly not a good idea.. you will have a test almost every single day and you will spend most of your time reading and memorizing. a&p is the first subject they start with and its a tough course.. we started with a class of 32 and dropped down to a class of 15 during a&p. so that should give you a pretty good idea.....

other than that.. i like it and will be graduating in june 08..

also, you do change teachers in the second half of the year. there is also a math test that you must pass with 100% in order to continue on. they give you 7 changes. they do not teach you math there, but there is a math teacher you can go to during your lunch period!

good luck to you

hey Maria... can you give some information about Dutchess Boces?

Everything you can tell me would be excellent.

thank you very much

JoAnn...

I'm not sure how I ever missed your reply to me here..but thanks so much for the info. I started Dutchess Boces on 1/22....and am just about finished with A&P now. Whew!!! Last unit test will be this coming Tuesday...and then I believe it's on to Nursing Concepts.

The Math test you told me about is quickly approaching...3/10...and I've been spending my lunch hour with the Math teacher there to make sure I got it...I'm feeling pretty good about it now, so I hope I don't make any careless mistakes.

Like your class....I've already seen quite a few people drop from ours...and I'm hoping a couple ppl that havent done so well on the tests, will manage to pull off a 75 average at the end of A&P.

Anyway.....just wanted to thank you again- hope your class is going well also. And to the above poster...if you need any info from someone who just started....please let me know what you'd like to know.
