Question about applying for NCLEX

Published

Hi, everyone! Finally i found the site, where i can ask questions about my future plans becoming RN. I am foreign nurse. Completed school outside of USA. Now i would like to aplly for NCLEX. I did send request of transcripts form to my school, they did everything pretty quick, and send all my documentation to the Board. When i was contacting Board over the phone, they told me, that first they have to recieve my paperwork form my school, and only then i can send them my application with fingerprints and paid fees. It's been more than 6 monthes, i didnt receive any letter from the Board, telling me if i am eligible or not to take NCLEX. I know that it takes long time, but not that long i think. Maybe i am wrong. Please, if anyone knows what should i do? And, one more thing i am a Permanent Resident of USA, so i have no problems with immigration problems. Thank you so much.

What states are not answering the phones? I have no issues with Cali, Texas or New York.

You may have to wait a few minutes while the phone rings but I have to strongly disagree with your statement "That some boards don't even bother answering anymore"

You're right, an applicant has the option to call the BON directly. However, realize that sometimes calling does not really speed up your processing. The one instance I called California BON regarding my application, I was given the answer: "we have received all your documents except the transcript from the school you attended for your undergrad program in the Philippines". I know that the school sent it already as a relative in the Philippines took care of it but the fact that I was told the document is not in their possession yet doesn't help anything - it's their word against mine and throwing a hissy-fit about it wouldn't help either. I think that would only tick the other person on the line who may be more inclined to drop your entire packet in the shredder. Anyway, I did get my license after being patient about the whole thing - sweet!

I had difficulties getting an answer by email from several boards, New York was one of them. Everybody has their own experiences, and making phonecalls from overseas can be tricky, because of time difference, waiting time, costs, plus you have nothing in writing, what I do prefer. And for instance Vermonts preferred communication is via email.

If you had no problems, good for you, but your statement did indicate something different.

And apparantly you don't want to tell us what your job is, right? Then just say so. But since you seem to deal with so many boards, I guess you are one of those IEN recruiters or work for an agency.

Why the big secret?

Why would one throw a Hissy Fit. You be nice but prudent, Keep notes of when you called and whom you spoke with.

I suggest to get hold a supervisor and then contact them directly either by email or phone. Don't wait 6 months and wonder, Keep updated of your situation.

Forgein Graduates seem to confuse some BON. Even when registering with Pearson VUE, they will not have enough spaces for long Filipino full name.

Best thing to do is keep on top of any BON and stay updated, and it's always best to be nice but also be persistent.

Man, chill. You obviously can't take the humor in other people's posts. I detect that maybe your primary language isn't English based on the manner you write your posts. Where ya' from, man? You seem to have so much experience dealing with BON's. Just judging from your expertise, it sounds like you may be a RN license holder in multiple states. Correct me if I'm wrong but heck, maybe you can even write a book about how to get licensed in the USA.

Yea, I could probably write a book about it.

I got RN diploma in different country. No, i never did send application. That's what they told me on the phone. Wait untill we review your transcripts, and if we found that you are eligible for taking NCLEX, you will go head and send us the rest of paperwork. My 2 classmates from my Nursing school did same thing and they are already passed NCLEX and are working. But they are in NY, i am in CA. There are some diffrence in procedures. I am from Republic of Georgia ( it's a former USSR), and all our student have enough credits for taking NCLEX, without going to school in USA.

Make sure they still have your transcripts then....I hope you remember to whom you talked to, in case they don't have them anymore....

good luck

In that case, I would probably give them a call just to check on the progress of your application if you already live in the US. I would even venture to visit them in person in Sacramento if you're already in-state. Unfortunately, states can differ on which programs in certain foreign countries are accepted. I know a couple of former co-workers who worked as nurses in Russia who had to repeat the entire nursing program here in the US in order for them to be eligible to be licensed in Michigan. At least, the State of California is willing to review your transcript to see if you qualify for licensure there. That would definitely take time to ensure that the documents sent to them are legitimate and properly translated and I know you have good intentions but they don't know that just by looking at your transcript.

RN license holder in multiple states? :chuckle Love your sense of humor, NP Gilly, but let's not feed the flames! That poster is not a nurse, not a nursing student, not a nurse educator, not a CNA.

Employees at various Boards of Nursing are very busy addressing issues presented by nurses and applicants for licensure. They certainly don't have the resources to waste fielding hypothetical questions from people who have no real affiliation with the nursing profession.

Would you--as a nurse--call various state agencies that are responsible for licensing plumbers, and ask them all about the requirements for obtaining a plumber's license? Would you join a plumbers' forum--say "allplumbers.com"--and repeatedly post, even though you are not a plumber?? Would you call over over the country, pestering all the plumber's boards, trying to determine whether different states have different requirements to become a plumber? I don't really know you, but my gut feeling is that you wouldn't. Why not? Because you're smart enough to know that it wouldn't be appropriate for you to do so.

As I said: let's not feed the flames!
