I am about to start pre-nursing classes and I was wondering how you all chose which field to go into? How does it work? In nursing school do you get to see what all areas entail?
Thanks,

You find which field you like during school along with your life experiences. Some have nurse aid experience, some paramedics, some twist it a bit and go BS to BSN from law or plumbing. Many graduates have no medical background. Nursing is a cool career as when you get bored with what you are doing, you can just transfer to another position and get training to do it. Not instant transfer, you have to find somewhere that is hiring in what you are interested in. Good luck

In nursing school you'll get exposure to a variety of nursing specialties, but not all. Every school is different, but you will get experience in med/surg, ob/gyn, pediatrics, and psych among others.
Depending on your school you may get exposure to public health, geriatrics, OR, ER, and critical care specialties as well.
Obviously during school you won't be able to get to see every specialty area because there are so many, but you will get a good idea of where to start.

Like the others said, you will get to experience many of the different types of units while on clinicals during school. I just graduated on Saturday and accepted a job on an oncology floor. The funny part is that when I found out that I had to do a clinical on the oncology floor I was just about willing to do anything to get out of it and thought that there was no way that I would enjoy being on a floor like that and now I can't wait to start. Even if you have an idea of what floor you would like to work on when you start school there is a pretty good chance that you will change your mind. I went in thinking that I was going to do NICU and there was nothing that could stop me....well a year later I wanted maternity and now I'm doing oncology so you never know what will happen.

I wish someone would answer that question for me. I've been a med surge nurse for almost three years and I don't want to do it forever, or even much longer really, but I don't know where else would be a good place for me to go. I thought it was psyche until just last night when I got a nice, good dose of what psyche nursing will really be like, and decided no, it probably isn't for me after all.
