  1. I'm sorry to hear what your grandniece and family are going through. I work on an oncology floor for adults and have noticed that a lot of them bring movies with them for while they are in the hospital. One lady was even given a subscription for Netflix so that she could have her choice of movies while she was hospitalized. The movies help pass the time while they are in the hospital. I don't know if that's the kind of gift that you had in mind. My thoughts are with your grandniece.
  2. I was in the same position 2 years ago that you are in now. I was assigned to an oncology floor during my 3rd year of nursing school and was willing to do just about anything to get out of it because I had seen many family members go through cancer treatment and didn't want to have anything to do with it. Surprisingly, once I got there I loved it and when I went looking for jobs and only wanted jobs in oncology! I have been on an oncology unit for 7 months now and absolutely love it! The patients and their families are so grateful for everything you do and even when the treatment is not successful it is very fulfilling to be able to help the patient and their family through it. I would recommend that you keep an open mind about it (it seems like you already are). You will probably also work with some patients that are there for infections due to their low counts fromt the chemo and also some patients that are there as medical overflow. Good luck!
  3. I graduated from Bellin College of Nursing in May! Good luck in the future!
  4. 1. I had 75 questions. 2. I did not take a review course but I used the Saunders book and the CD that came with it. 3. My school required us to take the ATI predictor exam. 4. I took the test on Saturday and knew that I had passed by Monday afternoon! 5. When the test turned off all I wanted was for the test to come back. I was sure that I had failed and that there were going to be more questions. 6. Yes!
  5. I just started as an nurse on an oncology unit and work both days and pm's. I haven't experienced nights yet but I have noticed that towards the end of the shift on pm's things tend to quiet down a lot. The day shift can be pretty busy!
  6. I took the NCLEX last Saturday and I got my official license today (Friday)!
  7. Like the others said, you will get to experience many of the different types of units while on clinicals during school. I just graduated on Saturday and accepted a job on an oncology floor. The funny part is that when I found out that I had to do a clinical on the oncology floor I was just about willing to do anything to get out of it and thought that there was no way that I would enjoy being on a floor like that and now I can't wait to start. Even if you have an idea of what floor you would like to work on when you start school there is a pretty good chance that you will change your mind. I went in thinking that I was going to do NICU and there was nothing that could stop me....well a year later I wanted maternity and now I'm doing oncology so you never know what will happen.
  8. I have my graduation and pinning tomorrow! I can't believe its happening. While I was going through school it felt like it was never going to end and now when I think back it feels like I just started!
  9. I worked at Target through all four years of college and I also for 2 of those years at an assisted living facility.
  10. I will be graduating this year from a private school with over $50,000 in student loans. All I can say is I'm glad that this is my last semester and I don't have to add to that amount!
  11. Could you please send me the plan also? I graduate in May and plan on testing in June. Thank you! Bevy
  12. In my progran, we have clincals 7 out of the 8 semesters. We have one nursing course and our pre-reqs the first year and gradually take more nursing classes than pre-reqs. We started out doing clinicals one day a week for 4 hours at a nursing home and then sophomore year we had one 8 hour day of clinicals each week and by junior year had 2-3 8 hour days of clinical each week. It was actually kind of nice because you were exposed to the hospital and patients early on and we were able to see if nursing was really for you before you invested 2+ years of time and money into something you didn't really enjoy.
