I'm all in favor of maximizing the quality of healthcare, and I believe that what gets measured gets done and is more likely to be what is improved. But I came across this list of 326 (!) healthcare quality measures. And they are just the ones endorsed by the National Quality Forum...so who knows how many other measures there are being used out there.

IMHO, this data collection is causing a huge burden on everyone involved in providing care -- especially bedside nurses. Yes, I know there have been many threads on this. But to see this list of 326 measures in one place...wow!:uhoh21:

Its from these quality measures that CMS is picking its core measures. How your intsitution does in thes core measures will determine how the instituition will get paid. Remember what the institution gets paid determines, to a significant degree, how much you get paid. It won't be long before all insurances companies use these measures to determine how much they will pay also.

pay for performance (healthcare) - wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
proposals are already on the table from cms/medicare to pay for home care based on performance as early as 2009!

pay for performance logically will link to actual activities and efforts of providers - using evidence-based practices and systems (in the form of structural measures that will be collected at the agency level) - to promote use of such practices. planning/discussions are in a preliminary phase. providers, consumers, and interested parties, such as the many organizations that represent and work with patients in post-acute, home, community, and long-term care settings will be part of these efforts as they evolve.
my employer is one of the pilot agencies for quality outcomes.
