Hello everyone,
It feels as if just yesterday I was poping out the bubbly and doing a celebratory dance in ode to passing the NCLEX, but now that celebration is over and I am facing an even bigger challenge. I am a new Grad RN from a BSN program and i'm having a hard time finding work. I am a scholarship recipient for one of the biggest healthcare systems in South Florida, yet they do not have any position for us "scholarship interns" since they gave out more scholarships than available positions. I am being told that the hospital has 120 days to place me before the contract becomes null/void. Problem is, i do not have 4 months to spare. I have a mortgage and a child. I am willing to repay the scholarship if i am able to find a position within another hospital, but I have already applied to over 40 jobs within ALL the hospitals in South Florida as well as Central Florida and they all are NOT hiring new grads!! Every position is requiring EXPERIENCE!!!! Even a Med/surg unit where new grads are SUPPOSE to earn their experience , is requiring 2+ years experience. I am really running out of options and i'm considering relocating out of state if push comes to shove. Does anyone know where is hiring new grad RNs, even if it isnt in Florida?
I am not sure about how it works all over, but here in Texas an RN cannot work as an CNA, Tech, or LVN. I have had classmates try to get jobs as such and were told they cannot be hired as one of these because they have their RN License. We also had a lady working as a tech who recently just passed her boards. She had a few weeks between her test, and the start date of the RN internship. There was some rule which said she could not work as a tech after passing her boards since she was then an RN.
I'm a fresh bsn grad from a country in asia..
I already took our local exam for nursing, i'm waiting for the results & praying that what iv'e offered is more than enough to pass. within 1 month, im going to Nw Yrk, my dad works there. Of course I'm planning to take NCLEX; the thing is.. i'm really confused what state i'm i going to apply. Im thinking bet. CA & vermont.. Would anybody please give me some sincere advice about this one. thnk Q very much.. :)
tyler does sound like a dbag
to the OP: try picking 5 hospitals to really court. I applied to 40+ hospitals too but no one contacted me so eventually I decided, I'll choose 5 hospitals including ones I like, but also ones I think I'd have the best chance of getting hired at, and then court them. Call them, let them know you are passionate about the job, visit the unit, try to make contacts.
Your odds of getting a job will be better if you devote large amounts of time to several hospitals instead of bare minimum effort to many hospitals.
good luck!

The reasons why a lot of hospitals are not hiring is because of the economy and a glut of nurses coming out of school. For years everyone you seem to meet was trying to get in nursing school, I personally know of 2 ladies who have been waiting for 2 years to get into nursing school and have high GPA's. But this is a temporary situation. The economy will improve and there will be a nursing shortage again. Right now the hospitals are hiring travel nurses here in California. They do not require training so right now it is cheaper to hire them than a permanent employee. Here in CA the nurse to patient ratio is 5-1 on a med-surg unit and that is the law. So if you want to get your one year of experience and then do a travel assignment here in the Bay area. Northern CA pay more than Southern CA. So keep that in mind. Usually pay out here in CA for a new nurse would be about $47.00 per hour to start. Remember, we must learn to take constructive criticism, but also be very supportive of our new nurses. We must take them aside and explain to them pros-and cons and their new asssignment because not sharing needed info because you don't want to "hurt" their feeling can backfire on the new nurse. I came out of nursing school in 1998 and I certainly did not have that support that I should have had, But I got my one year experience and started travel nursing. So some nurses may have to take nurse aide positions until some positions open, or whatever job you could find for now. God Bless You all!!!
