Qualifications for nursing in Ireland (coming from the US)

Hello!

I am currently in nursing school, looking to graduate next May of 2010, take my NCLEX in June, and embark on my nursing career! I really want to do traveling nursing in Ireland (preferably Dublin), but I have no clue who to ask or what agencies to look for to go about starting the process.

I also don't know any of the qualifications for being a nurse in Ireland, regarding a visa and clinical hours etc. (I know that in order to work in the UK they require a year's experience here in the US first...is it the same for Ireland?)

So if anyone has any ideas to help lead me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!

Thank you!!

Hello again!

It's been a while since I have been on here, but I just graduated in May 2010 with my bachelor's in nursing and received my nursing license here in California in June of 2010. I am still very interested in working abroad and very interested in Australia because a good friend of mine has parents who are from there and she has been talking to me a little bit about Australia (although she doesn't know anything about nursing over there). As I am job searching here for nursing jobs/even volunteer jobs just to keep my skills fresh, I have also been trying to research the process of going over to Australia to work as a registered nurse, but I still have a lot of questions!

Is Australia still in a nursing shortage?/are they hiring new grads? because much of the problem here in California is that the nursing jobs are requiring at least a years worth of experience.

To begin the application process to work as a nurse in Australia is there a national agency that I register with or do I register with a specific state?

After registering do I think look at specific hospitals in the area that I would like to work and then apply? (I noticed that some people have gone through agencies to get them a job whereas other people suggest just applying to specific hospitals)

Any advice and/or direction would help me a lot! Thanks!

Most hospitals want people with at least a years experience. There are Grad programs which are a year long and consolidate what you have learned with support from Educators and study days while working.

Most hospitals want you to of done that. There is stiff competition for those positions and priority is given to Aussie Grads first. Some private hospitals and those outside of the major cities in some of the bigger towns may be more willing to take you on without one.

But the first thing is to see if you are eligible to register. Check out the AHPRA website first thing.
