There should be specific orders from the MD and someone from the resp dept should have been involved when treatment started. You should ask for an RT to show you how to use any resp equipment that you aren't familiar with. They're the experts and it's part of their job to teach other caregivers.

I totally agree. And the thing is that in this nsg home I think we don't have RT. so since the order was placed "BiPap at sleep hours" nobody even tried to find out how to do it. I spoke already to the Supervisor, and she called the company that delivered the machine, so that they could bring a special piece; they're going to ask the manufacturer" i also asked a coleague, who said' just adapt the Bipap to the trache, don't worry, the're should be an outlet for the expiracion air". I also asked the DON, she doesn't have a clue, but she would't suggest nothing special. So thanks a lot , now i know i wasn't so clueless.

In this case the providers of the equipment should have taken care of any needed teaching. Furthermore, they are remiss in not providing all of the necessary connectors. That was evident when the equipment was delivered; the service person probably did not even do a set up at all. He might not have been trained himself. Sometimes these places hire delivery persons that are just that, delivery persons. Your supervisor should call the DME company back and insist on an inservice and delivery of all needed parts. For that matter, the DON should be making those calls.

In the home health field we usually get excellent service from the DME providers. They will even come to our agency or have us come to their offices for inservices. I've even had parts delivered after midnight. Good luck in getting the parts and any help. Hopefully, it doesn't take too long.

Thanks for your input, i cshould add that my supervisor called the provider, and guess what, they have no clue regarding that piece, they promised to call the manufacturer to get it. And problably, as you said, the delivery was done forjust a delivery guy. I wasn't in this unit when the machine came, so I wouldn't know. Again thank you all for your help
