Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Class

Published

Right now I'm a Sophomore in Nursing School and one of my classes is Psych. Well my upcoming test is ALL Psychopharmacology. And I've been staring at these 20 pages of notes for a while now, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to memorize all of the Psych meds and their Indications and Nursing Implications? I can't even pronounce these things LOL.

Specializes in Acute Mental Health.

Ummm notecards? You simply can't memorize all of the psych meds. I've been a mental health nurse for about 5yrs and I haven't memorized all of them. Not even close. Break it up maybe into groups: Antipsychotics, antidepressants, sedatives, etc. I bought a psych drug flip book at B&N last year that was just the facts and made it much easier.

Good luck!

Definitely notecards. I agree with chevyv. I'd break them into categories. I think that'd be your best bet!

Goodluck!

As you go along you will notice that most meds have a lot of similarities to other meds. As long as you know what meds go into what categories, you should be pretty gtg.

Specializes in Leadership, Psych, HomeCare, Amb. Care.

You don't memorize them all individually

Learn the categories, antipsychotics, atypicals, SSRI, etc

know which types are most common, their indications, uses and potential s/e. Then, fit the name to the category.

i doubt your instructor will expect you to know when Paxil is Preferred over Prozac, but you will want to know when Haldol or Geodon is preferred over Ativan.
