Any suggested reading for new/future psych RNs? I'd love to hear about any books or periodicals that may have informed your practice or otherwise contributed to your effectiveness, understanding, skills, etc. in the psych nursing realm.
Thanks so much!
Immediately these come to mind as they provide a nonclinical perspective of behavior.
Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker
Dangerous Personalities and What Every BODY is saying by Joe Navarro.
Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goldman
Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker
Anything written by Malcolm Gladwell
Social Psychology for Dummies by Daniel Richardson
Left of Bang by Riley and Van Horn.
The Psychopath Whisperer by Kent Kiehl
Although it's for medical students, I highly recommend First Aid for the Psychiatry Clerkship. It helped me a lot when I started my first psychiatric nursing job. It goes through the major psychiatric diagnoses and medications.

I was just about to ask the same question. I am starting a new position in residential treatment for adolescent boys. I'll mostly be handling medication education for the Mental Health workers who supervise the boys, but also being there for first aide, accompanying them to doctor's visits and advocating for their medical care, assisting with after hospital care , and the like...This is a new specialty and work setting for me. I was hoping to get some advice on the nitty-gritty, down and dirty resources to START.
