Sounds like you did the safest thing you could for the patient and the staff.

restraints are appropriate if the patient is at risk for doing harm to themself or others but the need for them is to be reassessed at frequent intervals. if the haldol was effective, then she should have been able to have the physical ones removed, of course with close observation.

We recently had a 17 yr old come in to recover from a procedure in the PACU. She came in and was thrashing and yelling. I said to myself,"this one has some psych issues" and lo and behold I find out she does. Several I won't get into, but anyhow she became violent and tried to kick bite hit scratch and jump off the gurney. She got worse when she knew the restraints were coming. She was with it enough to cuss me out and deliver two good scratches to my right arm which still sting. So my question is, were we wrong for restraining her bodily? I ask because this pediatritian who responded to our need for help(along with security) was upset that we "held her down". Well excuse me, but we had 5 adults holding her to protect herself and staff from injury. The Haldol IV took effect after 15 minutes of continued fighting and more profanities.She maintained eyer contact w/me whild describing what she thought of me and my mother. The restraints were removed after 15 minutes by the doctor (I stood far away)
