Provisional approval schools

Published

I downloaded the list of approved schools for Nevada from the NV State Board of Nursing.

The following shcools have provisional approval: Everest (AAS), ITT (AAS), Kaplan (ADN) & NV Career Institute (LPN).

Does anyone have experience with these schools? Approximate cost? Will the courses transfer to a college/university for a BSN?

What is the difference between a AAS & ADN?

I have a friend who taught at ITT. The Board is shutting them down for numerous violations the notes are on the BON web sit for the last meeting. Rumor is Everest is not going to get approval either. Check with the BON before signing. Cost 40-50 thousand. Wait for CSN it's a much better education then the buy-a-degrees and more respect from other nurses.

I'm in CSN's ADN program now. There's no difference between AAS, ADN and ASN. Different schools have different names but you will still be getting an associates degree and (hopefully) be eligible to sit for the NCLEX (I say hopefully because I don't know what the BON's specific rules are regarding eligibility when you go to a school with provisional approval) when you graduate. Now I'm not trying to say my school is the best but CSN is fully approved by the BON and has been for quite some time, along with UNLV and NSC (both BSN) and the cost for all are considerably cheaper than the schools that have provisional approval. You kind of take a gamble when you go to a school that is not BON approved because if they fail to gain approval by the time you graduate, you may not be eligible to transfer to a BSN program and it may be even more difficult to obtain a job. If I were you I would spend a little bit more time to get accepted to CSN, UNLV or NSC. You will spend a lot less money and not have to worry about approval. It's tough enough to find a job in this market and you want to do everything that you can to make the job hunt easier while getting a good education.

Thanks for the feedback. Guess I will cross those schools off my list

I'm just curious where you decided to go? I just moved to Nevada and was looking to start school at NV Career Institute. Now I'm not sure it's such a good idea...

Yeah....save yourself the headache

I agree with slinkyheadCNA...just stick with the schools that have full approval AND accreditation.

Moved to Vegas in November & I have decided to wait it out and apply to CSN or UNLV. Unless I want to pay ridiculous fees, I have to wait a year for residency. I plan to take a refresher math through the Division of Workforce so I can prepare for the TEAS.
