Providence Scholarship/OHSU questions

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

hi guys...i'm new here! i've just started my pre-requisets at portland community college and am looking to transfer to ohsu...in a while. people have told me about the providence scholarship, but one of the sites i found said it was only available to students going to u of p. originally, i was looking at going to either ohsu or u of p, but their pre-requisets are so radically different, i had to choose one or the other, so i knew what to take for spring term! if i don't get into ohsu, i will work on pre-reqs for u of p.

does ohsu have an interview? i am going to try to make it up there next week, if i have the time...to look at the campus a bit more and maybe talk to an advisor, or someone who can tell me more about the school in general. ;)

Nope...there is not an interview. :)

Good luck!

Cool! Are you going to OHSU now? If you are, any information you have to offer about the school would be greatly appreaciated! I would love to come and check out the school in the next few weeks, if I got some time. :) Thank you for the infomration!

Yes I am, and love it! But...I am at the Ashland campus, so I can only speak for the professors/hospital here. They have ALL been great, and I am very pleased with the program. We have a Providence scholarship that I just got in my email the other day, but I am not sure if it's the same one that is in Portland...

I think it's pretty cool they have a few campuses...I just figured that out a few month ago. Where you born and raised here in Oregon? :)

Actually...no, I was originally born in MI, but lived in CA from the age of 16 until 4 years ago. That is when I moved to OR, and love it here. I plan on staying for sure! :)

The OHSU campus seemed pretty nice to me. I had to take my son to Doernbechers last fall and we wandered around a bit.

If you plan to apply to OHSU have a good strong application essay! I spent a few months working on mine. I know others in the program that spent a deal of time on it as well. My friend has applied this year to both of their programs (consortium, which is 3 yrs. and the reg. 2 year) and wrote different essays for each application.

Best of luck to you.

They are getting rid of the 2 year program, so the Consortium is my only option. :) Since am pretty starting my pre-reqs, I am not sure when I need to apply, so I guess that would be one of the questions I have for them. :) I like the whole area up there, and Dornbechers has fabolus doctors. :D Actually, I just learned a few months back where the SON was...I never knew exactly where it was. :) Thank you for your helpful advice! How big is your class?

Ahhh, that's right. I think this is the last year they are doing the 2 year here (this class starting summer '06). They told us after we were finishing Patho and Pharm, that they were breaking them into "Patho I & II and Pharm I & II" but didn't want to tell us beforehand so it wouldn't scare us silly LOL!

I think my friend applied for both because she has bachelors in psych, but her overall GPA sunk her for the 2 year. Her pre-req GPA for the 3 year (pre-req classes) looks much better. But she thought she'd take a stab at both.

All the rumors I have heard, prior to getting into school (weeding out, mean clinical instructors, etc.) have NOT at ALL been true in my experience. I have been very pleased with the quality of education I am getting, and with the professors. I am sure that their overall standards are the same for each campus. I am sure I will eventually run into some sort of issue. But so far so good! I started last June.

That's great that it's been such a good experience for you. :) When did you start clinicals?

We started clinicals in September. So far we've been in a LTC facility (2 wks) then the cardiac floor for the rest of that term. This term we are doing Med-Surg and have rotations on the post-surg floor, ER, OR, PACU, one day with a RT in the NICU (yeahhh that was awesome!) and special studies, such as Nuclear medicine, and the cath lab. I've seen a LOT this term, and gained a lot of skills. It has been a good term. We've been going 2x/week.

I know that the answer to this questio would most likely by differnet for me, but...How much time do you spend studying each day? How many days are you in class a week? When does your school day start/end? When does your clinical day start/end? :)

We have theory classes 2x week this term. Mon/Tue from 8-12. Then Wed/Thu are clinical days...have to be to the hospital by 6:30 a.m., and we are off the floor by 1 p.m. for an hour or so for post-clinical conference (we talk about our experience that day in a casual group discussion). Then on Friday we have lab, and 3x this term we switched out our clinical days for Simulation lab (which involves the mannequins & hands-on skills with a "made up" patient scenario...we go in groups of 3, and the rest of the class watches us on tv from another room).

Studying...well, I am pretty dedicated to school and I am anal about getting A's lol, so...on average I would say 3-4 hours a day? I do NO studying on clinical days (too pooped and my kids are too needy by the time I get home). I do most of my studying on the weekend really. The term we had Patho/Pharm I did a lot more studying. That term was a bit intense. This one has been easier...aside from a 10 pg. research paper I just finished today! :uhoh21:

If you are real curious, you can check out some of the course materials/lecture notes for our campus on the website here (our campus is a satellite on SOU's campus): http://www.sou.edu/nursing/courses.html

Any other Q's feel free to ask!
