Providence Scholarship/OHSU questions

Published

hi guys...i'm new here! i've just started my pre-requisets at portland community college and am looking to transfer to ohsu...in a while. people have told me about the providence scholarship, but one of the sites i found said it was only available to students going to u of p. originally, i was looking at going to either ohsu or u of p, but their pre-requisets are so radically different, i had to choose one or the other, so i knew what to take for spring term! if i don't get into ohsu, i will work on pre-reqs for u of p.

does ohsu have an interview? i am going to try to make it up there next week, if i have the time...to look at the campus a bit more and maybe talk to an advisor, or someone who can tell me more about the school in general. ;)

I agreee...lol. Well, somebody has to post here...might as well be us. :p What made you decide to go to nursing school?

My kids, for sure! And here they are now...you can't tell they were preemies I bet.

Furkids too...you have to scroll down. The NICU nurses were awesome to me. My turn to give back.

edit...OOPS, forgot I did some housekeeping on that website and took their pics down...lol. Nevermind on that URL.

I went on a trip to the Dominican Republic last summer, and I met this guy down there who was working on pre-requisets for PCC's nursing program. He talked about how he wanted to go to school, get some nursing experinece, and come back to the DR and start a ministry. That's what turned me onto nursing...when I thought about how many people I could help, in the US, or wherever...:)

Good for you! Make mention of that in your essay. That is what my friend did, a LOT of ministry work...the one who I told you just applied this year to OHSU...She's been all over the place, and is almost 50. Has some interesting stories for sure.

I bet she has some great stories!!! Is the essay based off a question, or what? Or do you just write something about your goals?

I think there is more info about it on their website, but there are some questions you answer. She told me that for the consortium program, there are definite questions...the one I wrote, was more general...there were guidelines though for that.

Okay, I'll look...although I have yet to see anything regarding admission. :p What's the homeowork and classwork like? Is it worksheets, essays, or what? What about presentations?

As far as homework goes, it depends on the class. Patho & Pharm we had no homework at all...3 tests for each class. We had a presentation for our Health Promotion class, in which we did a Jeopardy game. There is a lot less homework, compared to pre-req classes, overall...but the tests have a lot more weight. We just did a group presentation for our lab class where we compared policies/procedcures/textbook on keeping central venous access devices patent. We had to interview nurses at two different hospitals (not a problem since my group had clinicals at two diff hospitals) and watch them flush central lines. We often turn in journal entries...reflective journals which provide information on our experiences that impact us. I hope that makes sense...it's late. :) We've also had to write a few papers. I will be turning in one tomorrow that I spent a good deal of time on for my Adult Health/Illness class on multiple sclerosis (which runs in my family)...we got to choose the topic, and I learned a lot.

Hope this helps!

It does help - a lot! Thank you. :) What are you doing for your elective/general education credits? Are there classes that are a better fit for nursing than others?

I have to thank both of you for this board!!! I've been trying to find information just like this for OHSU because i am getting ready to submit my application and was unsure about the essay. Then of course you get excited about the possibility of getting accepted and want to know anything and absolutely everything there is t know about the program. I'd say you definitely gave a lot more information than the OHSY site does. Thanks! :)

I second that thank you! It's been awesome reading, and though this is about a different OHSU campus than I'd be going to if I get in, it really helps me get a sense of the tone OHSU sets, and what the work/school day is like.

:redbeathe:heartbeat:heartbeat:redbeathe:yeah:

I AGREE, all this info was great. :D Thanks a bunch! I am about to submit my application and I am already nervous about knowing whether I get in or not.
