Pros and Cons of working for a "union"...

I heard many great things about working for a Union, but don't really understand the specifics...and I have yet to hear anything bad but I'm pretty sure there are some cons...

I am a new graduate RN and have never worked for a union before so any advice about this that I should watch out for??

How do you identify whether a hospital is "unionized" or not? I tried to look on their websites, but some of them don't state it...

Also, where do you get information about the union and their members for a specific hospital?

Thank you for the information...:yeah: but can you give me a more detailed information on what a "union" does and how they actually "protect us"? :D

I think it would be good for you to look up the history of unions - what conditions spurred their creations, problems they have had, the whole thing.

Then come back if you have some questions.

And it goes like it goes like the river flows

and time keeps rolling on

And maybe what's good gets a little bit better

and maybe what's bad gets gone.....

Are you looking in Washington? If so, the WSNA site may help ( Labor Relations - Washington State Nurses Association ). It is important to note, however, that some other hospitals' nurses are represented by other unions.

Here's another union of local significance (be sure to click on the hospital names to see what staff are unionized) Chapters | SEIU Healthcare 1199NW .

Yes, different hospitals are under different unions. Some are closed shop. That means you join no matter what. Other hospitals are open and you have the choice to join. If you don't, you are still covered by the union if you need them.

If you have difference with management the union can help you with your issue, by sitting in on the meeting and helping file a grievance against them if needed.
