I graduated from Delta State for my RN-BSN and MSN, FNP. I am now enrolled in the DNP program there as well. The admissions have been limited due to geographical location, however, the admissions have increased since I graduated 8 years ago. It is primarily online, however, there are a couple of times a semester that is required to be on campus. Most testing is online, but the final is on campus. You may have a check-off on campus, but definitely at the clinical site. The course work is online, the practicum (clinical) is at a site of your choosing pertaining to semester content. It has been a successful program, even to the point of adding the DNP program several years ago. The instructors are mostly based on campus, but there are a few adjunct faculty. There are timely responses by email. If a conference is scheduled, usually it is done by a videoing system like Skype. They try to make it very easy to go back to school at a distance. Oh, and it was rated in Dec 2016 as the #1 school for your money. 100% success rate on certification last year.

What Is a 6-Month RN to BSN Program?
A 6-month RN to BSN program is an accelerated educational pathway designed for RNs who already possess an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a diploma in nursing. The program allows these nurses to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in a shortened timeframe of six months, as opposed to the traditional two to four years. This accelerated format is tailored for those who wish to advance their careers quickly, take on more specialized roles, or pursue further education in the nursing field.
Coursework & Clinical Training
The coursework required in an RN to BSN program is designed to build upon the foundational knowledge and skills acquired during an ADN program. While the specific courses can vary depending on the institution and program, the following are common courses and topics typically found in RN to BSN programs:
- Pharmacology
- Pathophysiology
- Public Health
- Health Assessment
- Management and Leadership
In addition to these courses, many RN to BSN programs also include clinical experiences or practicums, which provide students with hands-on experience in various healthcare settings. These clinical experiences allow students to apply their classroom learning in real-world situations and further develop their nursing skills.
It's important to note that the specific courses and their content can vary based on the institution, the program's focus, and the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.
6-Month RN to BSN Prerequisites & Requirements
It's important to note that 6-month RN to BSN programs are accelerated options and that offering institutions emphasize the ability for the program to be completed at such a pace, however, don't guarantee that students will.
This is because before enrolling in a 6-month RN to BSN program, prospective students must meet certain prerequisite courses in general education and requirements to ensure they are adequately prepared for the accelerated pace of the program.
- General Education: Programs may require completion of general education courses, such as anatomy, physiology, Microbiology, and statistics if they were not covered in the ADN or diploma program.
- Transcripts: Applicants must provide transcripts from their ADN or diploma program to demonstrate successful completion of foundational nursing courses.
- GPA: Many programs require a minimum GPA, often around 2.5 to 3.0, from previous nursing education.
- Active RN License: Applicants must possess an active and unencumbered RN license in the state where they intend to complete their clinical training.
- Clinical Hours: While many RN to BSN programs recognize the clinical experience gained during the ADN or diploma program, some may require additional clinical hours or specific clinical experiences to meet BSN-level competencies.
- Letters of Recommendation: Some programs may ask for letters of recommendation that attest to the applicant's clinical skills and readiness for an accelerated program.
Costs of a 6-Month RN to BSN
The costs associated with a 6-month RN to BSN program can vary widely based on factors such as the institution, location, and whether it's a public or private program. Expenses to consider include:
- Tuition: As the primary cost, tuition can vary significantly. Some programs charge per credit hour, while others implement a flat-rate structure for the entire program.
- Books: Essential for nursing programs, textbooks can incur considerable expenses. Students are advised to budget for books, exploring options like discounted used or online versions—ensuring alignment with the professors' required editions.
- Clinical Fees: Some institutions may impose additional fees related to clinical placements.
- Lab Fees: Resources for hands-on skills training in a skill lab may come with associated fees.
- Technology Fees: Given the reliance on advanced healthcare technology, certain programs may necessitate specific technology devices, such as a handheld computer similar to a PDA, for accessing crucial apps like Epocrates with a drug reference library and other essential resources. Smartphones are typically not permitted in these situations as they should not be used in patient care areas or rooms.
- Miscellaneous Fees: These include various charges like application fees, student fees, ID fees, and graduation fees among other potential miscellaneous costs linked to university or college attendance.
- Cost of Living: If planning to cease employment while accelerating BSN studies, meticulous budgeting becomes imperative. This includes allocating funds for rent, food, gas, and other daily living expenses.
It's essential for prospective students to research specific programs, understand all associated costs, and explore financial aid options, scholarships, or employer tuition reimbursement programs to help offset expenses.

Advantages of 6-Month RN to BSN Programs
The advantages of 6-month RN to BSN programs include:
- Time Efficiency: One of the most significant benefits is the shortened duration. Nurses can earn their BSN degree in just half a year, allowing them to advance in their careers more quickly.
- Cost: Often, accelerated programs can be more cost-effective than traditional programs because students spend less time in school, potentially reducing tuition and associated expenses.
- Flexibility: Many 6-month RN to BSN programs offer online or hybrid formats, allowing working professionals to balance their studies with their job responsibilities.
- Increased Hiring and Salary Potential: With a BSN degree, nurses may have better job prospects, qualify for higher-paying positions, and meet the requirements of institutions that prefer or mandate BSN-prepared nurses.
- Increased Autonomy: A BSN degree often provides nurses with greater autonomy in their roles, allowing them to take on more responsibilities and make more critical decisions in patient care.
- Preparation for Advanced Roles: Completing a BSN program can be a stepping stone for nurses who wish to pursue advanced roles, such as nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse educator.
- Comprehensive Curriculum: Despite the accelerated format, these programs provide a comprehensive curriculum that covers advanced topics in nursing, preparing graduates for a wide range of nursing challenges.
- Opportunity for Immediate Advancement: For nurses looking to move into leadership roles or specialized areas quickly, the 6-month program allows them to gain the necessary credentials without a prolonged wait.
- Competitive Edge: In the job market, having a BSN can give nurses a competitive edge over those with only an ADN, especially as many healthcare institutions are moving towards hiring BSN-prepared nurses exclusively.
- Personal Satisfaction: Achieving a higher level of education in a short time can provide a sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction.
- Networking Opportunities: Being part of an accelerated program can offer unique networking opportunities with peers, faculty, and healthcare professionals, which can be beneficial for future career advancement.
While 6-month RN to BSN programs offer numerous advantages, they also come with challenges due to their intensive nature. Prospective students should consider their personal and professional commitments and determine if they can dedicate the necessary time and effort to succeed in such a fast-paced program.
Are 6-Month RN to BSN Programs Respected & Worth It?
The respectability and worth of 6-month RN to BSN programs largely depend on several key factors. Firstly, accreditation is crucial; programs accredited by recognized nursing education bodies are generally respected within the healthcare community. However, the condensed nature of a 6-month program can raise questions about the depth and comprehensiveness of the curriculum. It's important to ensure that these accelerated programs do not compromise on the essential components of nursing education.
In terms of worth, these programs can be highly beneficial for RNs looking to advance their careers quickly, especially if they have prior nursing experience and a strong foundation in the field. They offer a fast track to higher qualifications and potential career advancements, but this accelerated pace might not suit everyone, particularly those who prefer a more in-depth and less pressured learning environment.
Ultimately, the value of a 6-month RN to BSN program depends on individual career goals, learning styles, and the specific program's quality and reputation.
