Bam! Another Kid Snatched from the Jaws of Death
Had a kiddo in this morning with a sore throat so bad he was tearful. Just started here at school. I grabbed my penlight and headed to get a tongue depressor just to take a peek. Well his eyes got really big and he took a step back and said, "I think it is feeling much better and I think I should go to class!" Saving lives one tongue depressor at a time!

Advice: High school to middle school nurse
I love Middle School. They are old enough to know names of their teachers, parents and to spell their own name. They are little enough that they still can have open minds and they love learning. But they are also old enough that you can shake your head and tell them that they made a dumb choice. You can have real life discussions with them. In the beginning of their first year, they come for hugs and minor things, you can teach them and help them understand their bodies. They can go from, "Nurse I feel sick", to "Nurse, I am having lower stomach pains that kind of pulse" or "my headache started 3rd period and I have had two water bottles and put my head down for half of 4th period after I ate lunch. But it still hurts." They are young enough to still have childish delight in the little things but old enough to have fun in-depth real discussions with them. My district is still naïve as well, so at the middle school I don't deal as much with overdoses, pregnancy and high needs emergencies as our high schools do. Closer campus, better district moral and higher pay? Can't get much better than that for me.

Narcolepsy in Child
I have a student with narcolepsy and cataplexy. He is on medications at home to help keep him awake, but also has a 30 minutes lunch nap written into his 504. He is difficult to awaken when he forgets his medication at home, but is aware enough to let me know that he forgot. I will let mom know. She will sometimes bring in the medication/take him home, but usually we agree to let him nap for about an hour. That will usually get him through the day, although he doesn't function at peak performance. ? I have always been able to awaken him, but sometimes two or three times before he is able to get moving.

C'Mon Now!
Had a kiddo come to the front office to get a bandaid for a teacher. Came back a bit later saying it wasn't bit enough and that maybe the nurse should come. I grabbed a few things and headed to the opposite side of campus. Found the teacher on the floor holding together the edges of a deep 2 inch laceration on a kiddo's leg, pool of blood on the floor. Yup, needed a bigger bandaid! Sent him out to probably get stitched.

Elementary vs. Middle School Nursing
I agree! I'm lovin my sassy middle schoolers. They know their teacher's names and their parents phone numbers. They know if it is a stomach ache or nausea. And they don't cry if you give them sass right back. I feel like I can have conversations instead of comfort sessions. They don't need me as often for injuries but if they do, it is usually worse than I have seen at the elementary. Depends on your temperament. But I love my middles.

Happy Nurse's week.... I guess
londonflo, I think school nurses get lumped in with the teachers for lower pay and other less than stellar perks of the job in education. At our "nurse's station" we are just venting about not getting the same kind recognition. We are not looking for ideas on how to fix it, just validating our left out thoughts with others who are feeling the same. Thanks for your input. When/if we have the time, energy or means, we will have some good suggestions on how to make ourselves more visible.

Just Can't Make This Up
Uuggg! Our illness guidelines this whole year, if you are sent home sick with Covid symptoms, return after ten days, a negative Covid test or alternate diagnosis from Dr. Five months of this. Mom calls yesterday, "I know that you said ten days but I don't want to test him or take him to the Dr. and he is feeling a little better, can he come back today? No, just no! And still No! Not even ten days unless he is feeling a lot better please.

Holiday Travel and Mandatory Quarantining?
On the opposite end, we might be happy that they travel. We are so bad here that it might be good for people to get out of the state. haha Sorry for ours that visit ya'll.

C'Mon Now!
Just had a teacher send a kiddo down to my office for sniffles and a cough. We are in a high risk category, so policy says all Covid symptoms go home for 10 days. So no wrestling for him either. Here's the fun part. It is three minutes before the dismissal bell! Just why? What about the whole rest of the day that he has been here? He said he has been coughing for three days, so good call but really, he couldn't have been sent, um I don't know, when he first arrived?

No Guidelines Yet on Screenings
Oh that would be my dream come true! I feel like each year my immunization numbers get worse and worse, but until my district thinks it is important enough to enforce exclusion........

Policy/protocol for Nasal Versed or stock Epinephrine
Now that we are officially, soft-closed for the year, our district is focusing on working on paperwork that we haven't been able to get to and have wanted to implement. Does anyone have a policy or protocol for nasal Versed and for stock Epinephrine that you are willing to share? Many thanks in advance.

A "real nurse" or school nurse
Haven't heard much of this either until about 10 minutes after reading this post. Had a kiddo ask me if I had to go to school to be a school nurse, like real nurses do. Um yup, got the letters behind my name to prove it too.
