I got removed from my clinical practice
Refusing to return because it would be a hostile environment - why did you feel it would be hostile? Being on Facebook during clinicals or on your cell phone is not allowed. Going to the department head of the facility And complaining is never an option. A nursing student is not an employee. Any and all complaints are to be directed to your instructor or your school. Nursing students in the clinical setting of a hospital or any setting are to be seen. Not heard. Meaning they are to respect the staff that is there and to stay out of the way. It is a privilege to for nursing students to be in a real setting. Being aggressive for more responsibilities is sometimes good but it's the way one goes about it. Was this your first clinical rotation ? If so - learning the basics is vital. Many times instructors will give students what they can handle. If it was at a nursing home - there are times that there's not much more than head to toe assessments. Doing those over and over may seem boring - but it is the most important skill you will use over and over and over and over. No nurse is above it. It is a required skill

Dr. Order for band aid?????
If the bandaid was put on an open area, the area should have been measured and an order should have been written. Incident report? My opinion is document when you find a bandaid that is not found in the TAR. (as well as find out what is UNDER the bandaid) That will CYA if there is ever any question. Any time a bandaid is needed, the nurse who puts it on should document that it was done - and why. Date and initials included on bandaid. Unfortunately there are a number of reasons some dont do this. (Even when d/c IV - documenting what the site looks/feels and that put clean dressing on - even if just write bandaid)

Life as a Nurse
Mushymash - thank you for your post. You described many of our days with exactness and humor. Keep up the good work and take bathroom breaks:). I don't think nursing is for everyone!!! I have worked with some that are able to take their lunch, breaks and get off on time. And those are the ones who leave doctor orders undone, or patient treatments undone. And refuse to help others.

Why Even go for your MA? Don't Understand...
I am NOT saying that this is the reason some people choose to be MAs - but if someone has a drunk driving charge, or an arrest record, or charges filed against them for whatever reason..... most Boards of Nursing will not let someone sit for the boards. I remember when I was in nursing school we had to do a background check the first week of clinicals. I felt bad for a fellow student who had to drop out. She was arrested 15 years earlier in a bar fight and was charged with assault. She could not be a nurse. BUT she could be a state tested nurses assistant! (Stna)

CNA to LPN to BSN to MSN , Whew!
I think most nursing programs require nursing aide class before admission. I don't think you have to be certified but do need the class. I went the quickest route, there was a wait list for the asn program, so I chose to go for my LPN...I ended up completing the LPN program and started making money. The waitlist was 3 years for the asn program. I was done and working and making money before the 3 years was up. I did go back for my ASN thru Excelsior college, and still completed It before I would have been done if I had gone the traditional route. I am planning on going for my BSN. You need to do what works best for you:). Go for it!!

Becoming a nurse for the money...
So its okay that someone can voice their opinion about nurses like she does, when she is not even a student? That kind of negativity isnt needed here. Not only is it not true, its innapropriate. Its apparent that there is some bitterness there. Oh and I did NOT say this website was just for nurses. I said nurses and students. I do feel that lately there have been ALOT of posts(some on the negative side) from people apparently considering nursing. It really takes away from this website. We do like to debate and have discussions, but some are just getting out of hand.

Becoming a nurse for the money...
I read other posts from her, she is not even a student, in June 09 she says she was accepted in to a program in the fall of 09, but advising others to NOT go into nursing. Last year (early 2008)she was steering others away from a certain nursing school. I joined this website to hear from other nurses and students. It seems that lately there are more people not in the medical field giving their advice, being negative. Downing our profession. I dont mind hearing negative from people in the trenches just like me, but not from people looking in. And we get slapped if we defend ourselves?? I thought this was for nurses?

SURVEY for 75 questions on NCLEX RN
Believe it or not MOST nursing students dont know about this website, have you ever looked at how many members there are?? Its only by word of mouth. Or when someone fails, they go online looking for support and find allnurses. So if you are seeing someone say they failed numerous times, its a very SMALL percentage of the population. And BTW on this website, I see way more international students repeating the exam 4,5,6 times. Not very many USA educated. Guess you and I arent reading the same posts. And just so you know, just because there are more diseases and conditons in the USA, DOES NOT MEAN a US nursing student will see it. We learn from books just like you. We are ALL human.

Becoming a nurse for the money...
Vanillavirtue, I must have missed the post that said nurses were looking for respect or wanting to marry doctors. Nurses marry doctors, and doctors marry nurses. Attorneys marry secretaries or lawclerks and vice versa. It depends on the person, not the title. Just because a person is a doctor doesn't mean they aren't human. FYI, some doctors spend most of their day at a hospital. Where do you think the "dating" will come from? Nurses do get respect from some doctors. There are some nurses who don't respect some doctors. And not all nurses look down on nurses aides. We shouldn't go around with preconceived ideas like these. It can cause bad attitudes and a "big chip on shoulders." Give people a chance. NOT everyone fits in the mold you suggested.

Becoming a nurse for the money...
The cost of living in CA is outrageous. So when you consider that in, its really not "lot more."

Soooo many questions!
Nursing has been good to me. Yes the money is good for now, as not really sure what direction the possible healthcare reform is going to take us. RNs can have an associate degree, bachelor degree, or masters. I know several young people who graduated this year from high school. They are going for their RN at a university, and hoping to become CRNAs. (A masters degree is required) This is a certified registered nurse anesthetist. They make great money. You may want to look into it. Each state has their own board of nursing, and you would need to apply when you move. You only have to pass the nclex once for the RN license. Some states are grouped together and are called compact states, which means you can apply to one and work in the others as well. I am not sure about Canada. Nursing school is a commitment so you need to think long and hard about it. Its not like a business or marketing degree. (not to say those are easy) But nursing clinicals are very hands on. Its a different ball of wax, or cup of tea so to speak. LVN or LPN school is a quicker way to go, and yes you can go back for your RN. Many take this route, as it puts you to work and many times employers will have some kind of tuition assistance. You are wise in asking questions. I am sure others will give better details than I. Good luck!!
