    Inane scripting

I generally answer the phone at my job with Thank you for calling XYZ this is AvaRose how can I help you...however the first time I answered a call from one of our doctors I happened to be standing outside the nurse's station trying to chart on the p...
  2. Tacky Christmas decorations littering the hallways so you can barely get your med cart through. Plus yesterday there were 50 small children singing carols in the dining room. They were so loud the nurses couldn't hear the doctor when he was tying to ...

Off topic: 8 year old found out Santa doesn't exist

I figured out at 3 that the presents from "Santa" had the same handwriting on the tags as the presents from Mom. That's what I get for learning to read at 2. That and as further proof I heard my mom and aunt putting my tricycle together in the middle...
  4. I learned how fast I can get lab and diagnostic to show up for a STAT chest x-ray and CBC (mention possible aspiration and/or Perforation due to a PEG tube and they get there within 30 minutes rather than the 4 hours it normally takes them for STAT)....
  5. Today I had to transfer a patient back to the hospital and I'm not sure I did the right thing in advocating for the transfer...perhaps I still have new grad informationitis from studying so much to pass NCLEX. A brief HIPPA safe (I hope) background: ...
  6. Yeah, I just didn't get a chance to post since my week was hell. She came back after 6 days with a diagnosis of Epigastric pain-unknown cause. She still has severe reflux and spends her mornings almost vomiting from the amount that she is spitting up...
  7. Thank you everyone :) As I said before, I will see on Tuesday if she is back with us or if she was deemed too unstable for rehab. This is the part of the process that will take me the most time to learn...making clinical judgements and using the all ...
  8. The daughter did actually call me (we always have to call family during a transfer and I had to leave a message for her) and asked why I was sending mom back to the hospital she just got discharged from less than 24 hours earlier. Apparently I sound ...
  9. I am in a transitional/short-term rehab facility. We don't have Nitro or EKGs. Our crash cart is O2 and Suction...not much help at all. I thought heart attack immediately but was constrained until the patient failed to respond to the medication the M...

Studying for nclex and feeling lost

Look into ATI...you need a lot more than 75 question qbanks. ATI gives comprehensive practice tests, a NCLEX predictor that will tell you your chances of passing NCLEX your first time, and LOTS of practice questions (I probably did 5000 questions). I...
  11. Thank you for the replies. I don't know about the admin there. I understand that Medicare only pays so much per day for the patients but sometimes outside tests are needed so they shouldn't be quite so quick to dismiss the need to further evaluate pa...
  12. We sent her at 1330 and as of 1830 she was still at the hospital with no report called in to transfer her back. I don't know if the ED was that backed up that even a potential MI would sit there that long or if they admitted her for further evaluatio...

New grad RN in Las Vegas

I've seen postings for Sunrise StaRN ED for end of Nov start date so I'm not sure why they couldn't have put you in that group but otherwise it is VERY difficult to get a new RN job here in Vegas. I had to take a job in a Transitional/Short-Term Reha...

    WILTW 10/29: Trauma for breakfast

I learned that I'm starting to resent my job, but not for the reasons that everyone might think. I resent it not because it is hard and I feel confused (though there are still those days), but because it is boring and in no way intellectually stimula...

Guess where I found a tiny piece of cardboard?!?

Ok the bug thing, live or not, would gross me right out of the room. I hate seeing bugs crawling around outside let alone in or on any part of my body. I used to live in a heavily tick infested area and I checked every inch of my skin even if it mean...

SO BAD at drawing blood, starting IV's??

I'm great at blood draws, can find a vein like a champ, but I suck at starting IVs. Once I'm in I either ruin the vein trying to advance the catheter portion, or I somehow jiggle the angle as I move the catheter and it ends up hitting a valve...eithe...

New nurse and feeling so discouraged

Thanks for the comments. Today was probably my best day yet. I got all my meds in on time (no red on my MAR at all for the whole shift). I had 6 of the 10 patients so that is saying something especially since 3 are diabetic and one is on IV antibioti...

Guess where I found a tiny piece of cardboard?!?

I actually asked today out of curiosity how long it took to extract the pencil and my boss said with all the waiting in the ER and the doctor who felt it was beneath him to do procedures when a nurse could do it but had to do it himself when no nurse...

Guess where I found a tiny piece of cardboard?!?

One of the bosses at my job got a call the other day from her kid's school. Seems her child decided to stick a pencil in his ear and they needed to send him to the hospital to have it removed since it broke off in his ear...I'm actually wondering how...

New nurse and feeling so discouraged

I'm pretty sure they don't care since after this hell shift on Thursday the DON texted me and asked if I could work an extra 12 on Friday which would have been all OT. I said no to that pretty quick, though if money gets tight I may pick up extra shi...

New nurse and feeling so discouraged

This is so true. I've been working my first RN job for about 4 weeks now at a short-term Rehab center and most of my shifts start well. I've gotten the dreaded 8 am med pass down to an hour (the first 2 weeks it was at least 1 1/2 hours). Now though ...

    Failed again 3x loser

I swear by ATI. The modules, remediation, assessments and comprehensive predictor made the real NCLEX so much easier to sit through. I finished the first time in 75 questions even with the dreaded SATA (29 of them).

    Lost

I feel the same way. In fact we'll see how tomorrow goes (the end of my orientation) but I may walk out the door and not go back. I am WAY not ready for being entirely independent with 2 discharges and 2 admits (which all happen at the same time) not...

How did you spend your first nursing paycheck?

Bills and the Security Deposit on my new apartment so I can move in next Saturday (after I get my 2nd check so I can pay rent and more bills)...Bills will be all I get to spend my checks on for quite awhile.

    Keep mouth shut? A & P 2

Try treating Select all that apply questions like each answer choice is a true/false question. The choices that are false can be eliminated. That saved my butt on NCLEX with almost half my questions being SATA.
