How is MO???
I know what I'm about to post isn't going to be popular and it's not a personal comment to you or anyone else, but geez I don't like when people say this! I don't care if people move here and I'm not telling anyone to not move here because this is a free country and Missouri is a great place to live, but it saddens and angers me to see all the beautiful land and trees ripped up in the counties so they can stick in more cookie cutter homes in every inch of free land and then traffic gets bad because the roads aren't made to accomodate more cars. The worst part is when they want all the city convienences so they keeping building and building and building. Then no one wants to live in the city and it falls apart while there is no land left in the counties! It seems to be spurred on when people say things like "Oh you can buy a huge home here for the same price you can buy a small home there!" and it's always the cookie cutter subdivison homes in the county they're talking about. It perpetuates the building because people keep moving here and buying them for that reason. I remember one winter it rained and then the temperature dropped so quickly the water froze on the tree branches. When the sun came up the next morning it looked gorgeous! The trees were sparkling. I will never see that again because the new people here voted for "progress" and now those trees are gone and a shopping center is in their place. That's so sad. I'm sorry if this post is offensive to anyone, but that's how I feel.

Is there power in the color white?
As casualjim said, I'm not yet qualified to talk about power and problems in nursing, but in my humble opinion I wouldn't say it's power. You're just conforming to how people think you should be or look and it makes them more comfortable to have you in the little box they want you in - that's all. Every time I read the debates about white uniforms on here and someone mentions positive reactions from the patients I think back to my sociology classes. I can't remember the concept but it's about how people unconsciously act more negative towards people who don't conform to their personal beliefs or standards in an attempt to beat them down so that they will conform. I can see that as clear as day when I read people's stories of how they were treated when they wore all white solely by the words other people use when they "compliment" the nurse when she wears white, for instance, "Now you look like a real nurse!" If every nurse wore white they wouldn't have any more power or be treated any better than you are now. The problems in nursing are beyond uniform colors.

Plan B
I'm baffled by people who think this would be abused considering plan b makes you cramp and have a period. I don't know any little girls or women who want to be flowing and cramping 24/7! I'm sure there could be a very, very, very small minority of extremely stupid and desperate women out there who would try to use it all the time, but most women aren't that brainless nor are they masochists who want to have a period every week.

Plan B
A few things here: 1) It seems to me that alot of women who are pro-choice don't have an opinion on what other women should do or not do with their bodies because they want other women to have a choice even if it's a choice they wouldn't make for themselves because they don't know that person's medical history, financial state, or life's circumstances. They seem to trust that other women know what's best for themselves. It's usually the other way around with more conservative people who generally seem to be hung up on other's behavior or possible behavior. 2) It's disturbing to me that women want to judge other women. I can't believe any woman would argue that she should be entitled to have an opinion on what another woman does with her body because I would think we'd all be sick to death of hearing about what everyone wants us to do with our bodies. Aren't we all sick of people who try to make us feel guilty because we aren't doing exactly what they do? Because I *AM* sick to death of it. In fact, I'd say I am disgusted by it. I would never pretend to know what is best for another human being who is a complete stranger or almost stranger to me and if I did have an opinion I'm sure they wouldn't care what I thought about their lives. I know I don't care what others think I should do since others are rarely thinking about what's actually in my best interest or what is best overall for me. You can never have any discussion on women's reproductive lives or any aspect of their lives without having a serious, heated debate. Why do people get so nosy and emotional over women's bodies and pretty much everything women do? Look at the debates about breastfeeding, sexuality, childcare, mothers in the workplace, and birth control. It's disgusting to me. Why can't we leave each other alone or atleast be more open-minded and supportive of each other? And all judging other women does is give off the message that others must make decisions for women because they are either too stupid, immature, or just plain incapable of making decisions on what is best for themselves. How can anyone not be disgusted by that?

Male Nurses/female Patients
Many women - not just older women - don't want any man except the one they love and trust (their husband) to see them. As mentioned earlier, many women have religious beliefs about having a male doctor or nurse. And lets not forget that 1 in 4 women are victims of rape or molestation. Would you be the one to tell a rape victim who doesn't want you to touch her during a pelvic exam that she doesn't have a choice because you think it's discrimination? I'm a rape victim and if I was forced to have a man do my intimate exams there would be hell to pay. I'm sorry. I DON'T care about your feelings in this matter. I care about ME being comfortable in those already awkward and vulnerable exams.

Male RN-assist with pelvic exams?
Is it really that weird or confusing that someone who was just violated and brutalized by a man doesn't want to be touched - in the same area- by another one immediately afterwards? And the wrong kind of touch could make things worse for her emotionally and mentally. Most rape victims go through a period of distrusting/being suspicious of/disliking men. It happens. But I don't see how it's so strange that it's hard understand it. And to address the original poster: I was raped and I have no problem with male nurses in general. My favorite nurse is a man. He's gentle, he's friendly, he's hilarious, and he does everything well. I love when he's on duty at my doctor's office. But I would never allow him or any other man to help out with any kind of pelvic exam or breast exam. If I ever have kids, I don't want any male doctors or nurses while I give birth. And honestly, after reading some of the posts on here, my opinions and feelings are reinforced. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but that's how I feel.

Deaconess start in Jan
I'm repeating what the staff told us today at orientation. It's not a rumor. Like I said, I'll scan the letter for anyone who wants to read it. I'm sure the program will survive too because of the changes they made, but they did want us to know there is a possibility that they could lose it.

Deaconess start in Jan
Actually, I just got back from orientation and there is a chance the online program is going to eliminated due to poor pass rates. They're hopeful that it won't be because of the changes they've made, but they won't really find out until after the hearing in April. I can scan the letter they gave us for you guys to read.

Younger Nurses: Do you find people dont take you seriously? (semi-rant)
I say the same thing you do. I, too, feel insulted when someone tells me I look much younger than I am. How would they feel if I asked "Well, how old are you? Really?! You look MUCH older!" They'd be so insulted and yet I'm supposed to take it as a compliment when it's reversed? No one who is 27 likes to be told they don't even look like they've graduated from high school. That IS insulting and people don't realize how rude they're being. There have been a few times in my early 20s when I'd blow up and tell someone I only look young to them because their mind is twisted from watching too much tv where 30 year olds play 16 year olds. I don't say that anymore even though I want to sometimes.

Money Hungry Patients
Actually, The McDonalds case isn't as frivolous as the media and general public make it out to be. I said the same thing you did before we discussed this case in my trial and litagation class. McDonalds had a policy to heat their coffee to a scalding temperature. In fact, OSHA warned them twice to turn down the heat and they refused. The woman who spilled coffee on herself needed skin grafts. That's quite a burn. She won one or two days worth of coffee receipts from the corporation as her settlement. Just thought I'd clear that up.

pls explain..hypothyroid how can you have..
Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it. I am really frustrated with him. I gained 20 in the blink of an eye and he didn't seem to think anything was wrong despite the fact that I hadn't stopped exercising and didn't change my eating habits. The weight gain defied logic! I just now started losing weight. It's only a few pounds, but it's something! My throat was so swollen it hurt to talk sometimes. When I told him that, he said it was unrelated to my thyroid and then diagnosed me as having strep throat (without doing a culture on my throat). When that medication didn't work, he put me on prednisone for almost 4 months. He refused to put me on any kind of thyroid medication until my antibodies tripled and he found out I had a goiter, and even then he didn't want to acknowledge I had any kind of thyroid problem. It took him 6 months before he admitted my thyroid was not functioning correctly.

pls explain..hypothyroid how can you have..
Oh! That's fantastic! Where did you find this information? I just found an article in the British Journal of Medicine from two years ago stating the new official range was .1 - 3 that I wanted to show my doctor because the lab ranges he uses list 4.6 as the high end of normal.

Thank you, Diana! I feel sorry for your child! That must be hard especially at such a young age. I hope he or she is doing well. I'm fine with it right now. I'm feeling a little better and happier this month because I'm finally starting to lose the weight I've gained! YEA!

This won't let me edit my reply. I thought of a better analogy for you. Think of TSH as gravity. The perfect amount of gravity allows you to stand up straight with your feet on the ground (TSH range of .1 -3). If the gravitational pull (TSH secretion) becomes too great it pulls you down to the point where you can't stand up (below .1). If the gravitational pull (TSH secretion) is too little you float upwards (above 3). I'm not sure how good of an anology that is, but it's the best I can do right now. I don't know. I'm at work and pretty tired.

pls explain..hypothyroid how can you have..
I have Hashimoto's. From what I know .1 - 3 is the range of "normal" levels of TSH. The lower the number the more TSH you're producing. The higher the number the less TSH you're producing. Is that clear? Think of it this way..... When the thyroid stops producing as much TSH as it should you start packing on the pounds. When you produce too much TSH you start losing weight. Low number = low weight = too much TSH. High number = high weight = too little TSH.

ethics of holy water and Islam
Hi! It's called a Scapular. I don't know if I spelled that correctly. If you die wearing it you're supposed to go straight to heaven. But you don't need it to get into heaven if you die. I just thought I'd clarify that. Annie

My Journey Into Forensics Continues....
Where is the course being held? SLU or UMSL? SLU's course is very popular and I've heard many people say the coordinator is excellent. She may do both UMSL and SLU, but I don't remember.

What did you do before starting Nursing School?
I graduated from college expecting to go to law school and applied for a job at a local university's law library in order to get free tuition, but the job was filled. Human resources sent my resume to the medical school library and they hired me. I've been working there ever since. I don't remember when, but somewhere along the line I decided that law was not for me and that I'd like to go into nursing because I loved volunteering at the university hospital. But I had some stress issues and still have PTSD and some other issues from something that happened to me, so for a few years it seemed impossible for me to go back to school. Therapy helped alot. In fact, my second to last day in therapy this past January is the reason I'm beginning nursing school in Jan 2006. The place I went for therapy had programs for all the area hospitals - I'm not sure if it is SANE training or just an informational program for any nurse who is interested - and I overheard a nurse enrolled in the program say something while I was waiting for my appointment. Nothing before had ever fired me up enough to overcome my fears, anxiety, panic attacks, incredible stress, and depression. I signed up for nursing pre-req classes at the community college as soon as I got home from my appointment since the university I work for doesn't offer those classes in the summer. And that's how I got to where I am now.

Who else is starting Nursing School in January?
I'm starting in January. I believe January 6th is the first day of classes. I got my acceptance letter in October and I'm almost finished with all the post-acceptance things I have to do. I took my placement test today, took my CPR classes last Wednesday, and now all I need to do is get a physical and register for classes. I'm very scared, but excited. I absolutely have to work full time while I'm in school so the thought of working and going to school full time is kind of stressful, especially since it will cut down or eliminate my running time.
