Well, I have to disagree with you a bit. I've always believed that ALL surgery is elective. Even if it means the alternative is death. People have a right to decide. It is aggravating to see a case rescheduled and then turn out cancelled due to ...
I actually have said something similar to a doc...he asked the scrub tech (I was the circ.)to get NurseR so she could do crichord pressure on the pt... I looked at him and said "I've been doing crichord since you were in diapers...lets do this." Migh...
Didn't learn this week, but fairly recently: If you have over 20 years of experience, a per diem position pays more than agency... In my case, 25% more. I had been doing an agency gig there for 4 years already, so heck yes! Thanks to whoever left...

THE very best thing a nursing instructor said to me (actually the class)? If someone is telling you how to do something, even if you already know how, shut up and listen; you might learn something.
Husband hates to watch anything with me that contains medical scenes.... My favorite? Some movie or TV that had a scene of pt undergoing awake brain surgery, he was talking to surgeon.. In the background you could see and hear the ventilator!
I use cattywampus a lot, especially when positioning females in lithotomy, as in "her catty is wampus" My favorite saying/movie quote? "Sometimes, you just have to say {fudge} it."
We actually had a discussion about this during a total joint surgery recently. Had to Google it, it gad something to do with ancient warriors. Sometimes I'm glad we have computers in the OR... Google and IMDB are wonderful reference tools!

Most of the hospitals in the Seattle and surrounding area are hiring ADNs, but will require you to obtain your BSN in anywhere from 3-6 years, depending on place. I wish you luck, and hope you love Seattle!
A lot depends on where you work/live. Almost no OR will hire an RN straight out of school, without some kind of training in the OR. In the Seattle area, there is a Consortium thru UW, new grads or even experienced RNs wanting to switch over to the ...

Interesting side note... Medicare won't pay for a TURP if the pt declares themselves (on the paperwork anyway)as female. Did one recently, doc told us that little tidbit because the pt was really unhappy about having to put down male when she's been...

Sockwells come in a few different sizes, so they may work for you. I have thick ankles and calves (always have to get men's ski boots), and they fit fine.
I've had two embarassing moments during my nursing career. Both at a big downtown hospital in Texas. First one: I was starting to clean up after a busy morning of cysto cases (we had a workroom between two cysto ORs). Ran water to wash the instrum...
I've actually asked one, about 10 years ago (after almost 20 yrs in the OR). Wasn't really thinking, surgery for abdominal hyst had started and I was finally able to tend to my charting. Preop diagnosis was dysmenorrhea and undesired fertility. Wr...
HOVERMAT!! I'd put one on every pt if I could get by with it. They can be fairly pricey, but much cheaper than a workers comp claim. They come in single-use or reusable, and recently we've started using our reprocessing company to reprocess these.

The hospital I currently work for has some good guidelines on lifting, etc. they prefer you use lifting equipment if available. Otherwise, their policy is one person to assist per 35 pounds of patient. Yeah, I know, not generally workable. But a ...
