ER Tech & Soon to be ER RN

Content by EDboundSN

  1. I'm a senior nursing student and this debate arose with a couple of my classmates and me. I work as an ER tech and they work as patient care techs on the floor. As of right now, CDC guidelines state for PPE: So basically CDC is saying wear an N95 if you have it, but if you don't, wear a surgical mask until you can get an N95. So if you have a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patient, and all you have is a surgical mask and no N95, can you refuse to take care of that patient? Do you face any legal repercussions or potential fallout from your employer if you do refuse? Asking not only about tech positions, but RN positions as well.

Sharp New Grad Summer 2020 - August

Memorial emailed me two weeks ago and said there was a delay in application review due to coronavirus and applications would be reviewed over the next 4 weeks. I really wouldn’t be surprised if Summer cohort is cancelled though, I know UCLA and some other places in LA already cancelled theirs.
  3. I guess people were trying to tell me that using lesser PPE (masks) simply because the appropriate PPE (N95) isn't available doesn't justify putting your health and safety as risk, especially if the hospital does have N95's available but is not giving them out. Again - not my opinion, that's why I was seeking other opinions.
  4. I agree. I have a background in military and law enforcement though, so putting myself at risk to help others has always been in my character. But other's don't necessarily agree, so I was curious others opinions and legality of it all.

    Vanderbilt Summer 2020 Nurse Residency

Yeah Pearson Vue closed testing centers until mid April nationwide.

Just out of curiosity, have they said anything about potentially delaying cohorts due to covid?

    COVID-19: Pearson VUE test cancellation

So when do you realistically expect testing centers to reopen and hospitals to start allow new grads again? Summer? Fall? Next year?
  8. Wondering if there are any programs out there who have had their Spring 2020 graduation delayed or cancelled due to COVID 19? My school of nursing has recommended to instructors to move all lecture to online. No mandates yet; however, other schools of nursing in the area have already required classes to be moved online. No clinicals have been cancelled; however, the school of nursing is working with the BRN to figure out if clinical is cancelled, how the hours will be made up. While it isn't official word, I was told by the SoN that more than likely our ceremony will be cancelled, even if we are able to graduate on time in May. Wondering if anyone else is going through similar issues of potentially delayed or cancelled graduation dates due to inability to finish classes or clinical hours between now and graduation?
  9. I go to a state school in San Diego. All of our lectures were cancelled early last week and moved to online, clinical were cancelled last weekend. The School of Nursing is saying May graduate should still graduate on time, but they're still working on a plan to see if that's possible. Some of the other cohorts (we run 7 at a time) have already been told that their graduation is going to be pushed back a semester.

I'm at CSUSM. They haven't put out a plan yet, but we finished all of our required rotations per the BRN, which is geriatrics, med/surg, pediatrics, OB, and mental health. We were doing community and internship this semester, both of which got cancelled.

Sharp New Grad Summer 2020 - August

So I got an email from Sharp today around 7pm from Sharp Memorial Residency Program saying COVID19 has caused application delays and applications will continue to be removed over the next 4 weeks with a tentative goal of sending updates within those next 4 weeks. In regard to school, all of our remaining classroom/lecture/didactic work is online and clinical is cancelled. I'm not sure were we stand in regard to hours and units because the state requirement is confusing, but our director seems to think we'll be okay to graduate. What program are you in?

Sharp New Grad Summer 2020 - August

I'm sure it's going to have some effects on hiring, especially the interview process. I was in another state interviewing recently and they were doing interviews all through February and March; however, to what I've heard, they've all gone to Skype or phone interviews. Assuming Sharp still hires, I wouldn't be surprised if they do something similar. Also, I was completing my senior internships at Sharp and they were one of the first in SD County to stop allowing students. Not that this necessarily means anything, but might me hiring new grads is not their top priority right now or in the foreseeable future.
  13. So as of last night, my program director said the two classes graduating in May should still graduate. More junior cohorts have not received initial word, but the rumor for them is they're getting delayed at least 1 semester. No official word yet.
  14. Not at all, just that there’s a lot more politics, legality, and red tape today than there was in 1918. Don’t get me wrong I really want to graduate on time and help and do my part, but I don’t know how many corners if any they’re gonna cut to allow it. For example, many of the nursing schools in CA are petitioning to the governor to increase the cap of 75% clinical time and 25% lab time to 50/50 to make up hours lost by hospitals kicking students out. But I don’t know if that’s going to fly with the governor.
  15. Haha, interesting but it’s not 1918
  16. https://www.ocregister.com/2020/03/13/coronavirus-fallout-schools-seek-change-to-graduate-nursing-students-on-time/ According to that article, as it stands in CA, cancelled clinicals will delay nursing graduates.
  17. Yeah my program was doing the same, but all of the major hospitals we go to are saying no more students. Either because of the risk of COVID19 transmission, or them trying to limit all non-essential personnel due to supply and equipment shortages.

    TriStar Nurse Residency Summer 2020

    Cool, CONGRATS! What units?
  19. At this point I don’t even think I’m graduating let alone having a ceremony.
  20. Yeah I mean they’re not going to fail us but I foresee them putting our program on hold until further notice, thus delaying my graduation in 8 week. best of luck with getting it all done.
  21. Two days ago my campus, a California state university, cancelled in person classes and moved everything including nursing tk online. Yesterday they told us we would still attend clinicals. Today clinicals were cancelled.

    Vanderbilt Summer 2020 Nurse Residency

I went with a different hospital a little outside of Nashville that I was really impressed with, gave me a nice offer, and felt I'd get the best overall experience at.

    TriStar Nurse Residency Summer 2020

Got an offer at Summit SICU last night, which was odd on a Sunday at like 9pm. But I've decided to turn down my offer at Centennial ED and Summit SICU and go with another area offer in the ED that I received. I'll be looking to move from California to East Nashville area late June/early July. If anyone is moving to the area and going to be looking for a roommate, please shoot a message, would be nice to room with another nurse resident!

Under consideration just means they're reviewing your application. I applied to Memorial and Grossmont ED. Did my senior preceptorship in the ED at Memorial. Good luck.
