I am with you Marijke. I love to scrub!! I would hate to have to always circulate. I too love the powertools!! I have been able to do so much more around the house with the knowledge I have gained from this!!! I am serious!! Both roles are grea...
InCanada, where I practice, you must be an RN to circulate in an OR. If an RPN tech. has an RN in the room (who is not scrubbed in), she may then do circulating duties with direct supervision. We only have 2 techs in my workplace. They may not rel...
We will put a sign on the OR suite doors indicating that there is a sterile set-up inside. We have a 2 hour window. This works well for us. No post-op infections etc....from this occasional practice.

I have heard stories of the same in my OR. I have only seen it once, I guess they grew out of it. I had a surgeon throw a sharp trocar in my general directon, without looking. He did not hit hit, or mean to. I did not let him forget it. I made s...
Our heparinized saline is prepackaged. It is true that they need not be. Many facilities are now using only saline. Our docs were approached about doing the same. They declined.
I guess, that with the current nursing shortages, you probobly don't need to have experience as an RN to get a job in the OR. However, you really should have at least 2 years in a surgical setting. Pretty much anybody would tell you the same thing....
We don't have a P&P for this either. We are however, extremely careful with meds in the field. We will use sterile martkers to mark things if there is any chance of a mix-up, also using differnt syringe sizes for different meds. We all say alo...
Anything we do in the OR, we document on the OR record. For example, if the doctor asks us to give a gram of ancef, I document it on the meds portion of the record. If any specimens are sent, I tic this off as well. Even if the anethetist asks us ...
Hi there. Where I work, the patient arrives in the OR having rec'd a pre-op scrub with a hibitane scrub brush. In the OR, the patient in prepped with betadine in the usual fashion, wiped, then prepped with alcohol, and wiped again, the skin is the...
Very interesting thread. I know that when I worked on the floors, there was constant confusion about who was who. One of my favourite scrubs was the same colour as the dietary staff began to wear. I was often given empty food trays from my patien...
I only just checked back to the site...sorry took so long. To my knowledge, nothing is singed re universal precautions, etc...I can see why CEO is concerned with this. However, the rep. knows he can not touch the sterile field, and stays back from i...
In our OR, we have a lap chole cart, bowel cart, etc...It is in the room for whatever it is that we are doing. On it is what we need for the laperscopic version, as well as a box containing what is needed to open. It is a very smooth transition re...
Aimeee. I thought it was about the same thing. We all know that it is difficult, to say the least, to have time to go to the washroom. I love working in the OR. I never have to worry about my uniform. However, to make it less UNIform. I wear ...
We have just recently established a P&P for this exact situation. We are getting more and more into min. inv. surg. We have had a lot of trials etc...therefore, tons of reps coming through. Our form in very simple. After checking in at the des...
we have had a lot of delays lately, due to a shortage of beds for in patients. It always ends up, that we proceed after a long delay. Our manager has noe decided that we will start the procedure anyway, and deal with a no bed situation later. Not ...
In our OR, when we are pstponed, say to something vital being contaminated by a tear, it can take up to one and a half hours to get the needed item returned, we then dismantle this set-up. We never cover a set up.
Hi there. I have not been on the site all summer. I hope you are alright. I don't know what to say really. I know I have made a couple of careless moves.........I could be you......Please let us know how you are. Kim
Hi there. First I would like to say hi to everybody out there. I have not logged on to the site in months.... I have now been in the OR for one year........I love it. I miss my patient contact that I had on the surgical floor I worked before, but n...
How absolutely frightening for you. I have no idea what to say, except that I am so sorry. I too was stuck with a needle. It was my own fault. I was new, and as a new scrub nurse in an emerg. c-section, I felt rushed, and was careless with an 18 guag...
You know what?? We are a bunch of nurses. We work our butts off for way less than we are worth.......do we sound like people who generally take part in get rich schemes..?
