  1. How early to apply?

I graduated in May and applied during Spring Break. I had 2 job offers and accepted one of them by the time I graduated.
  2. Assessments every shift?

Of course I assess my patients at the beginning of every shift. I listen to their heart, lungs, abdomen; check their pulses; check for edema in the lower legs/feet ans ask them about last bm. Then I focus in on their problem area (why they are in the...
  3. I think it was 144 clinical hours per clinical class. You get credit for the community service you have to do; so I ended up doing 2 12-hour clinicals per week. And you have assignments due every week so you don't get to choose when you do the clinic...
  4. MD Present to Defibrillate?

I've had the same experience. The question whether shock before an MD arrives (usually the ER MD) has never presented itself; by the time the crash cart gets to the room and everything is hooked up, the code team has already arrived.
  5. How long does it take to have your license issued?

I'm in TX, I took the NCLEX on 6/28. I got the good pop-up and the quick results confirmed that I passed. It's now 12 days later and the BON still has not posted my license!! Why is it taking so long??
  6. Documentation as a GN

Yes, I'm in TX. Yes, as an LVN, an RN always added "I agree with above assessment" to my nurses notes. I have been working in my current facility for 5 years and I am one of the most experienced nurses on my floor (IMC). I am going to keep my same s...
  7. Documentation as a GN

I'm currently an LVN, just finished a LVN-RN program, and I just received my GN permit. As an LVN, I always have an RN sign my charting, do I have to do the same as GN or can a GN sign/chart just like an RN?
  8. Never placed an IV!!!!!

Talk to your unit manager and see if they can put you in the ER, day surgery, GI lab, .... for one or two shifts where you first can observe and then try to start IVs. Starting IVs is a skill that's learned on the job, not in nursing school.
  9. Lamar State College LVN to RN

Proctored exams?? Really?? None of my exams were proctored!
  10. Lamar State College LVN to RN

I bought all my books through Amazon.com and didn't have any problems. Just make sure you get the right ISBN because some classes require the textbook with CD/DVD.
  11. K+/Mag replacement protocol

We have K replacement protocol, but we can only use it if the pt's BUN and Creat are normal. So that would disqualify any HD patient right away.
  12. Lamar State College LVN to RN

If I remember correctly a lot of the classes have exams weekly or every other week. Like I said before, there is a lot of time involved: reading/studying and doing assignments. The program is not very difficult and can be completed if you have the ti...
  13. Lamar State College LVN to RN

Congrats on getting accepted!! :) They changed all the textbooks in the class starting after mine, so my books wouldn't help you. You can download a list with all the required textbooks online and then look for the books on sites that sell used books...
  14. Lamar State College LVN to RN

I have 2 more months left in the program, I'll graduate in May! :) You have to take 2 HESI tests. I took the first one 2 weeks ago. You get a conversion score that equals a percentage, e.g. my HESI score was a 1072, which converted to 93.98%, meani...
  15. Technology taking over

I can't wait! I can type a whole lot faster than I can write!
  16. Lamar State College LVN to RN

You don't have to do clinicals in a specialty area. I'm doing all my clinicals in ICU. As far as "work at your own pace", you have assignments due every week, so no, not really. The tests that you have to take are usually open for 24 hours, so you ne...
  17. your facility's calorie count policy?

We write down the percentage of each food.
  18. Lamar State College LVN to RN

you have to do 144 clinical hours in 5 weeks; for me that would be 12 12-hour shifts in 5 weeks. i'll have to do 3 12 hour shifts one week and 2 12 hours shifts the next week ...
  19. Lamar State College LVN to RN

i agree with you; the program/classes are a little confusing at times. there is a lot of self-studying involved. fortunately i have been an lvn for 5 years and i work in a hospital, where i'll be able to do my clinicals; that helps a lot! how are the...
  20. In my hospital most nurses (RNs and LVNs) wear navy or white; the RNs in FCS (Family Care Services = L&D, Women's Care and Peds) wear lavender. OR wears hospital-issued scrubs (salmon or green).
  21. Associates Degree in Vocational Nursing?

my lvn certificate took me a little less than 2 years: 5 prereq classes (taken in fall and spring semester), off for the summer, then lvn program from august to may. now i'm doing an lvn-rn transition program: 5 more prereq classes (2 in fall semest...
  22. Where do you keep your Medical tape??

    I do the same thing!
  23. IV infusion volume rate on Pump

I set the volume for 1L bags at 950ml.
  24. Lamar State College LVN to RN

I finished Pathophysiology last week and will start Intro to Professional Nursing and the Virtual Clinical next week. It looks like they restructured the program for the class starting in September. I did not take Intro to Computers during the nursin...
  25. Held Coreg w/ BP of 100/55

I would have given the Coreg. Our cardiologist wants us to give low-dose Coreg regardless of the BP. In the past she had problems with Coreg being held for low BP, so she started writing "do not hold Coreg unless SBP
