  1. crna vs Md

Which one costs more? Because I have read that going to med school in the Caribbean is incredibly expensive, roughly a quarter of a million dollars including food, transportation and accommodations. Attending CRNA school might be expensive too but it...
  2. Is 1.5 years in Med-Surg too short?

My dream job is to work for the VA so I would not leave because of what has been happening recently. It is unfair, but you are thinking about getting your masters and advancing anyways so in the long run this won't hinder you.
  3. Working 12s and having a dog/puppy

I would recommend doggie daycare. If it is a good facility, they will be clean. I think it is worth it because when we took my dog, he came home tired and slept the whole next day too. Your puppy will become well trained socially through doggie dayca...
  4. Getting bored. Recommedations?

I need to add my input on this part of your statement. There is not always more documentation than med surg, but in my ER there is still hourly rounding and expected patient updates like approximately what time the IN infusion stopped. There's tediou...
  5. Your Experience In Nurse Residency

Honestly, I just applied to a wide range of programs in the surrounding area. All of them were at well respected hospitals, had at least 12 weeks of orientation and allowed me to work on a unit I was interested in. Also, some programs I looked at pai...
  6. Cross fingers and toes please!

Good luck to you!! My husband is military, so I hate that constant state of unknown that you are talking about! It is really hard to make any sort of goal
  7. What do you like the most about nursing?

My 4 days off Being able to help others A good paying job offer upon graduation (unlike my friends who had easier college majors) The flexibility of pursuing different types of specialities & graduate programs
  8. FNP wanting to specialize

I honestly think it just depends. I have a friend who is a AGNP, yet she works in a OB GYN office specializing in oncology.
  9. New Grad ER Nurse!

ALWAYS be nice to your techs. They do so much for you. And when you are caught up with orders, offer to help others. They will see you going the extra mile & help you when they can (if they are decent people). Breathe. Always prioritize. I had 4...
  10. Nurse pt ratio in the er

We are 1:4. If someone gets an ICU pt or trauma, other nurses are supposed to step in to help out with the remaining patients. If we are really under staffed and have to open the back part of the ER, we get 5 patients.
  11. No longer want to be a floor nurse

Nursing has a lot of options. Look into insurance companies, hospitals or other healthcare facilities for job openings. You could even go back to school and become a nurse practitioner, informaticist, educator or administrator.
  12. Why Nursing Sucks...

Can we get administration to understand that too? I feel like the obsession with satisfaction scores is the biggest underlying issue. I get that hospitals want to have excellent ratings, but they can't burn out their nurses at the same time with high...
  13. Why Nursing Sucks...

The culture shock from nursing school to bedside nursing is INSANE & I can't see myself doing bedside nursing for the long haul. Your post hit the nail on the head.
  14. Would you have moved OOS for FNP school?

I would do it if it offers better opportunities in the future (which it will, since you will be a NP). Good luck!!
  15. New RN ready to give up

I do ask for help. I meant I have my go to experienced nurses that I seek out for advice and help, there's always at least 1 or 2 per shift I feel comfortable asking. I should have expanded on that.
  16. New RN ready to give up

I completely agree with your post, OP. I am a new ER nurse just getting off orientation and my anxiety is SKY high. My unit is short staffed and some nurses have such attitudes that I feel uncomfortable asking for their help. I am actually applying t...
  17. When is it time to leave ER?

I would move on in your position. Heck, I have been an ER nurse for 7 months and already looking forward to when I can leave (mostly because of unit policies/politics). Your knowledge is invaluable and any unit would be lucky to have you. It is impre...
  18. Age- looking young

2 years ago, I interviewed for a CNA position at a hospice facility. The nurse manager was rude and seemed focused on my age. She made it clear to me that in her mind, someone my age (I was 21 at the time but look younger) could not actually be inter...
  19. Nursing Informatics to CRNA

This sounds like an awful plan. Specifically because CRNA school sounds like it is in the distant future.
  20. Seeking Guidance

Hello! I am also a military spouse. The two universities I have found that discount their tuition for military spouses are Liberty University and Southern New Hampshire University. Both are completely online. Liberty's tuition is $250 per undergradua...
  21. What age did you complete your BSN or ASN?

BSN - 22 Hoping to go to grad school sooner rather than later. I am interested in nursing education.
  22. Do you stalk anyone here?

I stalk Some people here are just so interesting. I think the anonymity adds to the intrigue. I am nosy.
  23. Career change from ICU to Hospice

OP, I find your question very interesting. I work in acute care now but plan to eventually go to hospice too. What type of graduate degree are you thinking about to become a palliative care specialist?
  24. Ready to change

Are you required to stay on that unit for the full 2 years? Or you could just transfer within your hospital system to the ER? That may allow you to keep the contract and get into the ER.
  25. Some words for new grads.

I needed this today. I am in month 4 of a 5 month orientation as a new grad in the ER. For the last month, I have been questioning myself often: did I pick the right profession, right unit, right hospital? I am also getting to know some of my coworke...
