  1. now that it was mentioned..

I agree with location being part of pay. Cost of living is definately a factor. We have a couple of career pcas (Cna) on the floor at my facility. They do pretty well and are very efficient at there jobs. However, I've heard them both say they are on...
  2. now that it was mentioned..

Well this may be an unpopular response but no, I don't think cnas merit 16.00 an hour. In some places that's more then an Lpn makes and in a few places I know about what an RN makes though most make quite a bit more. The nursing program is extremely ...
  3. Unhappy CNA on night shift. Help?

Well I guess I can chip in on these two things. As far as the sleep issues goes I believe someone mentioned melatonin. I second this. It didn't leave me with the hangover effect that diphenhydramine did. The only downside I had was it gave me some wi...
  4. Overstepping boundaries

Oh yes! When I worked ltc this was a huge problem. It was mainly the housekeeper supervisor that did it. Really the cnas there were so beaten down that everyone tried to boss them around. They got away with it too.
  5. now that it was mentioned..

I'll be honest it was the pay that just burned me out on it. When you're forced to work 60+ hours at two different jobs just to barely make ends meet, something has to give. 9.00 is appalling for that job. Thankfully I'm dont have to do it anymore bu...
  6. Why are CNAs not held to professional standards?

It's horrible to say but mainly, at least in this state, cnas aren't considered professionals. That's why
  7. frustrated CNA

Really? Or admin at our hospital would flip out if you had a 25/hr nurse on a sitting assignment. That's wasting money. At our hospital it's all contracted out. Even the Pcas don't do it.
  8. now that it was mentioned..

I'm curious where that is. Here that's more then an Lpn makes. I'm pro aid and I don't even think they merit 16.00 without extensive additional training.
  9. now that it was mentioned..

I've never heard of cnas getting anything even close to that. I guess it would have to depend on the area. Where I am in ltc cnas make 7.50 to 10 on the high end. In hospitals 9-11ish on the high end. This is without shift diff of course. Nurses are ...
  10. Resentment

For nearly three years I've worked at this hospital as an aide, nurse extern, and as of next month a nurse applicant. While I was an aide and extern most of the doctors either ignored me completely or were out right rude. This goes for aprns as well....
  11. CNA=Poop cleaner?!

There may be some perks to being a career Cna but at the moment I can't think of anything. If you don't have to worry about money it might be alright and didn't care about being talked down to by nurses and outright ignored by doctors.
  12. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

I think the aid/nurse relationship is going to vary where you go. As a Cna in a ltc it was horrible on a great day. Lpns just simply didn't want to get their hands dirty. Many of them made that explicitly clear by stating that they are nurses and tha...
  13. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

That part where you say we shouldn't have to explain ourselves to Cnas. Technically this is true. I just really hope you don't actually say that. I've never had an RN say something even remotely close to that to me and after I graduate I wouldnt say ...
  14. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

We'll see I'm in a weird spot because as an extern I'm not a Cna anymore, yet not quite a nurse either. At least not for another couple of months. However, Let me muddy the water a bit. It's not always that cut and dry. On my hospital floor we are a ...
  15. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

Well I agree with most of what you said. I was a Cna for 3 years and I'm half way through my last semester of practicum so I do actually get to see what nurses do. Significantly more then I thought as I am never done on time. However I am going to ha...
  16. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

At my school it was a requirement to have taken a Cna course before being accepted into the nursing program. That being said it's usually obvious when your dealing with a nurse that's never been an aid before. I've run into some that didn't know how ...
  17. Nurses behavior towards CNA's?

I'll be honest I've rarely had an RN talk down to me. Actually never now that I think about it. LPNs? Well now that's happened more frequently. It became particularly worse the closer I've gotten to graduating from the RN program. I'm not really sure...
  18. A Rant by a Special Snowflake.

When I was a Cna at a ltc 3 years ago I started at 7.35. We had aids leaving to go work at Walmart because it was a better job. I kid you not. Hospitals around here typically pay more. I remember we lost 8 aids in two months to the same hospital for ...
  19. Certified nursing assistants not welcome!

What part of every facility is different went over your head?
  20. Certified nursing assistants not welcome!

It depends on the program for Cna training. You're right some of them really bad. Some are not. I was required to take it prior to admission into the rn program and it was offered through school. However it lasted for the entire semester, 16 weeks. I...
  21. I'm doing it currently. It's very difficult but doable.
  22. Do we matter?

In all honesty it's probably one of the most undervalued, underpaid, and least respected positions in both hospitals and Ltc. You break your back all day long for literally one third the pay of a nurse. That being said it I think it is a position th...
  23. Offered job while still an extern

I'm a nurse extern at a large hospital. I have two semesters left for my bsn. Today my supervisor along with hr offered me a position with the hospital pending graduation and licensure. They offered full tuition reimbursement as well but there was a ...
  24. Do we matter?

I don't think cnas will ever be obsolete especially in ltc. They don't use as many in a hospital setting but they are still there. As the number of elderly is increasing I would say the need for more aids will as well.
  25. Certified nursing assistants not welcome!

didn't read the second post did you? I didn't think so. You're absolutely right Cna courses don't teach this. However the nurses in the floor can and do for the aids and techs HERE. Not there..HERE. It is part of the 90 day skill evaluation checklist...
