Did you check if that was even allowed? I know there are limits to the number of credits one can take. Sounds insane to me. Do you work? If you dont, plan not to sleep. School will be very painful for you but good luck with all those labs at the same time.

We truly have a society that allows free speech. Are you in the medical profession? worse, are you a caring nurse? Whom do you like or care about?

These individuals are not serious and must be many of the nurses who hop from job to job because it is just a job. I cannot count the number of times I have to go beyond the call of duty, and I did that because I am a nurse, and I have a legal obligation to my patients. Furthermore, I am accountable for every decision that I made and every action that I take. Opinions differ; but nursing is more than a job.

Many years ago people would definitely chose nursing as a career because they truly wanted to be a nurse and to serve their fellowmen. It was not for the money and the other reasons you listed above because the pay back then was like a stipend. Also, there were not as many career options like today. However, in the 21 century, people chose their careers for diverse reasons and nursing is no exception. Some use other careers and jobs as a stepping stone, while others also use nursing as a stepping stone to get to other careers and vice versa. Also, because of globalization and advancement in technology, people can go more freely or advance from career to career. If she becomes a CNA, it may give her some insight into what nursing is all about and she maybe better able to determine if nursing is really for her.

I have been around in nursing for quite some time, and there is always this thing where some male nurses would be reluctant to do certain procedures on female patients. It is no different from being a physician. They take care of male and female equally without any complaint. We have more male doctors who are in Gyn than females. I am a female nurse and I dont have any problem taking care of male patients. I insert foleys and take care of genitalia if they cant. That is why I am a nure to take care of the total patient......it is called total patient care. When I was a patient due to a MVA, my best nurse was a male nurse, he was so caring. To this day I remember him. My suggestion to you to avoid all this sexist thing is to work in an area like outpatient

Because we have freedom of speech, people will respond without regards for feelings or emotions as noted in the posts. The president of the US is also criticized because he is held to certain standards. Therefore as nurses, we are held accountable to the standards of nursing as governed by the Nurse Practice Act. Every prudent nurse knows the behavioral and conduct requirements. My advise is to seek out a confidant for the future when you do not want your issue public.

Networking is the best deal. That is how I got my last three jobs. I am qualified academically and with experience but that did not pull it. By the way I am not a new nurse but will be a new grad in another 3-4 months with my doctorate. I will be in that position again looking for a new job. Keep on trying and networking.

Fully understand because I am in dissertation right now but I had subsidized loan from department of education, and I have not paid anything out of pocket. I am allotted $138, 000 and I am finishing this year and did not use all of it. I work in a school district and am planning to apply for forgiveness loan. You can apply for forgiveness if you can stand working with low populations but again it depends on what you are seeking your degree in. I am not doing it in nursing. It is in health care administration. I thought about the NP thing but not too focused on that... but I will only do teaching part time and no research as last resort. I am interested in areas like wellness, consultations, and speaking engagements. I like to travel and so don't mind consulting. There are a lot of things one can do with a PhD if you are creative. It maybe a trick question but the interviewee must take charge of the conversation and show some confidence. They know that it is not very easy to project what will happen in five years. I believe what they are looking for is short term and long term goals. Depends on whether you are a new graduate or an experienced nurse, as well as the type of position you are looking for. I would say that after 90 days I hope to be about 80 percent acquainted with routines and learning the culture of the organization. Because if orientation in whatever format is approximately six weeks. Then I would go on to say in 6 months to a year, I would be fully comfortable with routines, policies and procedure. Perhaps, thereafter, my goal would be a preceptor or mentor and would seek training in that area to be effective. there is no need to worry about five years because you said some buzz words: policies and procedures, preceptor, mentor and organizational culture. It is good to read up about the organization and some of the programs that they have, so when you get to those questions it will be a breeze, you will be able to zoom into something that they are doing. They will like that. Because I will say something like - I see that you have a an effective mentoring program here and that your retention rate is high (if it is) I would love being on such program in the future.

Not in my school district. At the beginning of each school year all staff are trained on life threatening conditions and the administration of emergency drugs. All persons that need to know are given a simple action plan about the the student's condition and if he/she takes medications at school the location of the medication and when the student should come to the clinic for treatment. These conditions are asthma, seizure disorder, diabetes, and food allergy and insect bites that require Epi-pens. Epi-pens are kept in an unlocked cabinet that is highly visible to all that need to know.

That was entirely misleading. Sometimes it is good to connect with someone who actually works at the organization. That will be the best review ever.

National Nurses Weeks has just passed and within that week was National School Nurses and also National Nurses Day. I really felt appreciated....Flowers and Bundt velvet cake on my desk in my office was just such a cool surprise when I opened my office door that morning. It was not only the day but all week I was receiving gifts from faculty, children and staff. I still have the flowers which are fading now at home but the memories will never, never fade. However, the greatest appreciation I felt was from students who poured out cards after cards that were designed creatively by them. Example: "Roses are red, violets are blue Ms Eve...we love you. You heal me; you cure me; you give me glasses; you feed me. Now another good one "Blood is red, veins are blue Ms Eve... we love you. You are the best nurse ever; you are a star; You are awsome; You are not mean. I received close to 100 cards. These are memories I will cherish for a long time and will create scrap books from it, and when the going gets rough it will keep me going.

It is not unusual to feel that way. Considering that you are a new grad and just over a year in the field. You are still adjusting to nursing because there is a lot out there to learn. I understand that when you just get thrown into it without any good support, it becomes very frustrating and you feel like quitting. Studies are shown right now that new nurses leave the field within 6 months to one year of hire because of the lack of social support. I believe that is what you are lacking in both of your jobs. I have had so many experiences with different nursing jobs when I want to quit because of so many different things happening and so many challenges but there was always someone to encourage me along with my own focus on why I did nursing and what I want out of it other than a pay check. Do I want to serve? When one provides service it is challenging because sometimes we have to provide service under unusual circumstances. Another thing to do is to say I will take one day at a time because that is all you can do and give it your best shot. At the end of the day you go home be with your family and regroup. Go back the next day with renewed strength and start a fresh. Its another day, so give it your best shot again. Try finding a buddy, someone you can talk to or call to ask questions and give you some support. Good luck and good nursing!

I am in Texas. I have masters and gets a stipend for that. I have more than 20 years of nursing experience which includes school nursing. Gets 2% yearly of late. I work 187 days. I am not on teacher's pay scale any more. I believe that is better. I am at $62,000. Its not great for my experience and what I do but I live with it because of the other perks. Grateful because it will be summer soon and I will be home for at least two months.

Mine is from my family name and my husband's family name. He told me that I did not have to change my name when we tied the knot. So, I add on his 15 letters long name to my short name. No one can pronounce it, spell it, or write it. Everyone is intimidated by my name. You are only seeing a part of it. I love to use it in different passwords and codes because no one else will even have that combo. Fun topic!!!

The disillusions of new grads is due in part by the shortage of the faculty and the preparation received in academic years and not entirely from the hospitals. However, if there were better programs and ways to orientate and socialize the new grads there would be less frustration and less quitting of the profession.When they get out they realize its a different world. The 21st century nurses are the 21st century nurses. They are not like the other generations of nurses who would stay on the job through thick or thin. They want what they want now or from yesterday. If it is not fixed, they are out of the organization and into another organization... where they will have every thing at their finger tips and are more socialized. Finally, some people take a job for the love of it no matter what and others take a job for what is in it. Great discussions you all!!!!!

I had one threw a metal roller desk at me because he requested his medication and it was not time. He came to the nurses station and that was what he did. I had to call security. However, he had history of addiction. Worse, another one who was HIV positive threw the full urinal at me, and he was not confused. I am still in nursing but I do school nursing now, which also has its own challenges. I guess we do what we do because we love the challenge of caring and not so much for what we get out of it. This is called answering the call to serve.

The job the experience is not tough everyday. If it was like that there would no one left in oncology. I would say follow your heart, stay focus and go goal. I did oncology nursing for 6 years and there were great days with good patient outcomes, and the tough days, for instance when staffing was short or the type of patient population maybe challenging for a while. Every day was never the same. I would encourage you to seek peer support early in your career and orientation that helps a lot. On a good note, we actually have time for parties and we could smile and enjoy what we did for our patients.When I was loss my job, I missed it. It was a large teaching hospital in of the world's largest medical center, perhaps that made a difference because we take care of patients from all over the world. Good Luck!!!!!

I am working on IRB approval right now so I can move on to data collection. It is such a tedious process. I anticipate finishing by the end of this year. At this time I cannot give a specific date when my thesis will be publish. Thank you for responding.

Hello, I fully understand your situation because I did not remain at bedside nursing forever. However, I did 16 years in Oncology nursing and that was a killer. I was physically, mentally and emotionally drained from cancer nursing. They downsized and so I did not have to do anything so they let me go. Well, just like you, I love preventive care so I went on to do my Masters in Public Health but until today, I never land a job in that field, which was very, very disappointing for me. I then worked in managed care for another eight years and now I am working as a school nurse which is on the preventive side. I am very crazy about wellness and hope to operate a wellness center or something to do with wellness. I love nursing because of the broad scope that we have to choose from. If you love to explore, you should be able to find a niche unless it is not for you. I do believe that having some clinical experience helps when you go to preventive care. you actually need that experience to draw from. I find my past clinical experience to be very valuable in school nursing because you are like a independent practitioner and need to make a lot of decisions that you will have to live with after. If you have no past experience, you will not be able to make critical decisions.
