  1. Salary for experienced nurse

There's not much railroad work in FL. No unions either.
  2. Major nursing liability

We do fingerprint scans where I work. Keys are so last century...
  3. Baby RN's running ICU?!!

In my opinion, that's because it's so hard to get your first job. We newbies grab whatever job we get first, then we can move on to what we really want, or where we really want to be. I don't plan on staying with my first job past two years, max.
  4. The "increase minimum wage" issue.

And this is why many are re-thinking college these days. Why graduate with tens of thousands in debt to make $40,000 or so a year? Trade school offers much better options. Last month I was offered a new RN job, requiring a BSN, paying $20 an hour. Ho...
  5. The "increase minimum wage" issue.

Because in the last 2 decades we've lost many middle class jobs and replaced them with McJobs. That's why.
  6. USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

Study groups! I did so much better on the tests when I had a study buddy or group to bounce concepts off of. There are some study rooms downstairs that are great to use.
  7. USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

Yeah, it is a matter of if there's space. Our clinicals are so limited because there's a nursing school on every corner in Tampa. The ABSN is hard work, but many of us get through it. Throughout the program, we had heads of different NP programs spe...
  8. Does abortion play a role?

You can be "pro-life" and work in OB if you can put your bias aside and give the patient whatever care she needs. The OP clearly is struggling with that, and should stay out of OB if she can't come to terms with the fact that not everyone shares her ...
  9. Nursing Malpractice Insurance?

Hi again everyone! I'm starting my first nursing job soon (!) and remember my instructors recommending malpractice insurance. I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  10. New graduate job

Move! I interviewed in 3 different states.
  11. Nursing Malpractice Insurance?

Wow, that's so cheap considering the peace of mind it will give me. Thanks Rose_Queen.
  12. New Nurse Night Shift Time Management HELP

Not to thread-jack, but I hate bedside charting because it seems to encourage chit-chat. The patients want to talk, and ask questions while I'm trying to chart. Maybe it's just my experience, but I chart faster at the nurses' station, which I know is...
  13. USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

I didn't know it was an option either. That's what I get for never going to an information session! Luckily it didn't hurt me, as I was accepted to the ABSN which is the only one I applied to. I knew someone who applied to both, got second degree (w...
  14. Does abortion play a role?

Thanks for the clarification. I vaguely remember hearing about the case, but couldn't recall the specifics. I often wonder why pro-life people would get into OB. Pregnancy isn't a happy time for everyone, and doesn't always have happy outcomes. If yo...
  15. USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

You can apply to both. If ABSN is too much, you just meet with your advisor to drop down to second degree. I knew a few students who did that. I'd apply to both to maximize my chances if I were you.
  16. Does applying out of state look good?

Some states are next to impossible to break into. Vermont isn't one of them. I had no trouble getting interviews at Central Vermont Medical Center with an out-of-state address. I chose to stay in FL though, since the pay was about the same but my cos...
  17. Job interview later today..stressed!

Can you PRN in acute care to get experience?
  18. New Grads-how long for first job

2 months post-NCLEX. Got a job at a great hospital with no connections or clinicals there. I had a great resume though, thanks to going to a great university that gave me awesome clinical sites. Everyone on this board bemoans how hard it is for new g...
  19. Dear Nursing Instructor

There's a difference between being a strict teacher and being a bully teacher. Not everyone gets that. I was once a teacher. I never screamed at a student, and I certainly never told them when and if they could go to the bathroom. That's unacceptable...
  20. I'm an Rn

Congrats! :) Isn't that a great feeling? It's awesome to put RN after your name, wear stuff that says RN, etc. I can't wait to start my job so I can tell patients "I'm your nurse," instead of "I'm a student nurse. ___ is your RN."
  21. Student wants to know what stethoscope is best

I just bought a littman and honestly don't understand what all the fuss is about. It sounds the same as any other stethoscope. Also, another tip: don't leave it in your car. I used to leave all my medical stuff in the trunk while in nursing school, ...
  22. medical prep institute of tampa bay

If you want to be an NP, you better go to a real school, as in one that is fully accredited. It is also next to impossible to get a hospital job in the Tampa area without a BSN, with USF pumping out 120 new grads twice a year, plus all the CC's have ...
  23. What is the proper way to address an RN?

Do you know if you own a house, a patient can very easily look you up if they know your first and last name through a property records search? If your patients know both your names, it's only a matter of time before something terrible happens. There'...
  24. What is the proper way to address an RN?

We only have first names on our badges. With the number of nurses who have told me stories of stalker ex-patients, I don't want anyone knowing anything other than my first name.
  25. I hate scrubs. Any have elastic?

I found my happy brand! Wonderwink. They're like yoga pants and a t-shirt! I'm so glad that's over.
