  1. Do you still have energy to cook after a 12 hour shift?

I didn't do much cooking until I retired, and I discovered my house had a kitchen!
  2. Surplus of Nurses - should I think twice?

I can tell you that nursing at 60 ain't easy! Bad knees, arthritis, and 12 hr + shifts don't mix.
  3. Why did you decide to become a nurse?

Temporary Insanity. That and I'm a 3rd generation nurse, now retired!
  4. Nurses not taking breaks

What's a break? Never in over 40 years of nursing did I ever have coverage for a break. Now retired I have a part time gig at a pet shop that I LOVE. The first day they walked up to me and said 'Go take your 15 minutes' I almost fainted. And I only w...
  5. Dumbest thing a doctor has done/said to you

LOL! Love this thread. After 40+ years, I've got a few goodies too. MD calls all panicked when I was IC/EH manager. A patient of his in ICU was found to have tetanus and he wanted all the staff to have tetanus boosters because they 'might get it'. Ex...
  6. Nurses expecting to do too much!

I guess I'm anal, but because I HATE to be forced to get on the telephone and chase docs for order clarification once they have escaped the unit, I've been known to grab the chart right out of their hands to check for completeness and legibility, at ...
  7. Going "Above and Beyond" UGH

When did hospitals (hospital: a place where sick or dying person go to have their basic human and medical needs cared for in a humane manner by specially trained and skilled caregivers) go into competition with the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Chain? As a K...
  8. Med Error by CNA

I'm still confused. It is my understanding that in certain states CNAs, with additional training as a Medication Tech can pass routine meds. Maryland is one such state. Otherwise, anyone other than an RN or LPN, can't pass any meds. That said, are yo...
  9. 1st Med Error

The nurse who claims never to have made a med error must not do anything! So said one of my instructors better than 40 years ago. There are the errors you know about and then there are the 'insensible' ones - those that neither you or anyone else cat...
  10. Documenting elimination route

    Void, incontinent, qs (quantity sufficient).
  11. Should I be worried contact with Mrsa/VRE patient?

Gotta a flash for you - this is a Body Fluid Exposure - report this to Employee Health at once and write up an exposure/incident report! Then follow the facility protocol. Don't you remember OSHA? Another flash - you are exposed to MRSA every day in ...
  12. What age of patient's are the most difficult for you?

MDs! One, when I was a student nurse told me to go get his chart, he 'wanted to write some orders'! Another cried when I had to shave areas on his chest to get his monitor leads to stick. The third, who was also the hospital CEO, would disappear regu...
  13. Hospitals Firing Seasoned Nurses: Nurses FIGHT Back!

"I was told that if I wanted a BSN; with all the coursework I had completed already, it should only be a few upper level nursing courses. When I looked into it, I found that schools wanted anywhere from 10-15 courses at costs of $11,000 - $25,000. Wh...
  14. Anybody you know leave the field of nursing?

I didn't leave nursing, it left me. Many of us in our late 50s-60s were ousted during a sweep at 3 local hospitals. The few left were given such a hard time they left with most taking early retirement.
  15. Age Discrimination in Nursing

Age discrimination is so true. Within the last 6 years 3 of the 4 local hospitals riffed most of their long term nurses. Of those I know who were not caught in the eliminations (done under the guise of eliminating positions and then turning around an...
  16. Bread making for stress relief...

Bread making is a great stress reliever - I beat the daylights out of that dough. Better than a stress ball. And so yummy!
  17. Joint commission and their ridiculous mandates

Also, the state comes in for free! And as long as you are state certified you continue to get paid by Medicare/Medicaid. JCAHO is just a 'perceived' status symbol.
  18. Joint commission and their ridiculous mandates

It is all done to justify their own existence and keep those survey fees rolling in. I could never figure out why we would actually pay to be made miserable. They would set a standard and we would work like slaves to satisfy it, they would inspect a...
  19. What can you tolerate the least?

You mean M&M enemas are still used? WOW, I remember the first one I gave - almost didn't make it out of the blast range in time! As far as what I can't tolerate, the answer is odors, smells. Once that hits my nose, the gagging begins. Not cool in...
  20. I have questions but can't find answers.

Graduated at 16? Most schools for nursing at least require applicants to be 18. I imagine you best bet is to take some college courses and then figure out what you want. Almost any medical type program will require English, a math course, etc. And yo...
  21. Can you live a luxury lifestyle as a nurse?

    LOL, silly wabbit!
  22. Holiday Scheduling - how to make it fair

I used to love working the holidays. But back the then was no time and a half for holidays. The big advantage for me was doing it in exchange for 3 or 4 days off after so I could travel home, since the were not local. I worked that way for 5 - 6 year...
  23. What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?

My experience deals with our nurses residence while I was in nursing school. In the early 70s, I attended a Catholic 3 year nursing diploma school. We were required to live in. The residence was a 4 story stone building that started life before the C...
  24. "For Profit" vs. "Non Profit" employers?

I worked in both. I've only seen layoffs in non-profit, however the worst patient care was seen in for profit. The patient was always secondary to profit. As far as employees, even with layoffs, most of whom were rehired as soon as it was feasible, t...
  25. how are men treated at your workplace?

I've always felt that more males in the profession could do nothing but raise it. I also don't have problems with male supervisors, DONs, etc. Been there, done that and got no use for it any more. As far as males getting promotions because they 'have...
