The student loan bubble is starting to burst
If you read back to her post you would see she went for an Accounting degree, not a nursing degree at a community college. So that was 4 years of college. Depending on her state of residence, that number is probably not unusual to hear from a college graduate. Also why on earth would anybody want to move to N. Dakota? That would cost me actually more money than I would save, with moving expenses, and then the months of job looking, and then having to take out loans to live by myself because nobody is going to want to move with me. The whole entire U.S. population cannot live in North Dakota because you are singing its praises. Sorry, but the rest of the U.S. doesnt have the same situation as North Dakota. The rest of the U.S is making $8 an hour and getting barked at by people like you with the whole "pull myself up by my own bootstraps" story. That bootstrap theory does not fit on everybody's feet.

The student loan bubble is starting to burst
Thats a pretty narrow view to have. I'm sure nobody wants to default on their student loans. Say somebody took your advice to get a menial job (if they didnt have one already) how much do you think they make? Working part time as a cashier (and almost no place thats a "menial" job will offer full time) I make maybe $400 a month depending on how many hours I was given and if we are in season or not. I make $8.00 an hour. Do you think I can pay for any student loans I have with that money? I have no idea where that money even goes to, it is such a small amount. At the end of the month, with all my bills to pay (gas, food, rent, medication) I have absolutely nothing left over. These people that default on their loans arent lazy. They were told from a young age that if you dont go to college then youre a failure at life and you will never get a good job, so hurry up go to college, only self respecting people go to college. So thats what they did. Guess what? Those jobs that they were guaranteed aren't there. This is such a big issue, with so many facets and variations, that it is extremely ignorant to suggest that just finding any ol' job can fix this crisis that our nation is going through right now. If that were the case, this wouldnt be happening right now.

Where are you starting your clinicals?
First clinicals will be in a rehab center for a few weeks. We are having one clinical day in a nursing home, I suppose as an introduction.

Tallahassee Community College Fall 2013
You will probably be accepted as an alternate for Spring term, their automatic acceptees for this year was from 145+. However we have 16 alternates and all but one got called in, so you could have a chance. It just varies every semester.

Why info on white culture omitted from cultural compence in textbooks?
Okay if you dont want to google just white culture, you can put in American culture, or whatever. Its not very hard to modify your search to not find neo nazi sites, not really that big of a deal.

First Day of Nursing School
Had my first day today. We went right into the course material after doing some Q & A's. Looks like clinicals start three weeks from now. Can't wait!

Tallahassee Community College Fall 2013
Good idea :) Any sort of bureaucratic process drives me up the wall, haha. Good luck with your exam!

Why info on white culture omitted from cultural compence in textbooks?
The book just puts emphasis on stereotypes, if you are that interested in learning about "white culture" (whatever that may be) then you can probably google the search to find some sort of understanding. On the other hand, the book probably doesnt high light "white culture" because there is no set definition of what that may be. Just because I MAY look "white", does not mean I'm not hispanic, or asian, or have a black parent or perhaps even adopted and raised by either. I may have been born in Australia and moved to the U.S (both have different sets of cultural values). "White culture" is too diverse to cover in just a couple of paragraphs, as is any other culture.

Do I have any options?
I definitely agree with the above poster, at this point loans & other assistence are your friend. I know my college offers a scholarship for single mothers, I would try looking for those maybe, and other grants as well. Don't give up, there are options out there.

Cancelation of student loans on nov. 15???

Microbiology Fall 2013!!!
Took Micro last year, and it was literally the EASIEST and best class I have ever taken-- and I am not a science orientated person at all. Don't stress too much, if you have half a brain you can pass it.

Oldest in cohort...feeling out of place
My nursing program has people of all ages in it, but I really dont think age is going to be a factor regardless. Nobody is going to treat you any differently for being older, everybody is equal.

Tallahassee Community College Fall 2013
I traveled up to Tallahassee from Sarasota to take the test and spend a few days scoping out the town, so I really don't know :/ I know TCC's website does say you have the option to take it at a testing center other than theres, but I dont know the process. I would try contacting Elsevier directly and asking them. If you plan on doing that, I would not wait until the last minute to take your test, because I think it takes a bit longer for TCC to receive your information.

Financial stress!!! GRRR
Thats awful :/ I havent taken out student loans yet, but I'm looking into it, just in case I need to in the future, and mostly for living expenses. I cannot work as much as I would like to, so I'm unsure of how to pay for anything yet, I will have to see my total monthly income before deciding what to do. I am also afraid of being hit with extra costs for the nursing program, so far I'm good, but you never know. Any way you could possibly find those books used off Amazon, or a prior addition?

Getting Past Squeamish Feeling
To be honest, I know this sounds a little weird, but I have never been too squeamish. I love horror movies, can watch gore without blinking, etc. The only time I have EVER been squeamish was when we were going over self harm in class. I honestly have no idea why, but when my instructor was going over the different types of self harm and detailing them, I almost passed out! I think that through exposure you eventually get used to seeing unpleasant things, although every now and then you might get hit with that uncomfortable squeamish feeling if youre not feeling in tip top shape, or see something else you have not encountered yet.

How many men in your cohort?
There is 6 men in my nursing program of 46, so far. May change come Monday since people are always giving up their seats and letting an alternate take them.

In between pre-nursing and nursing student (am I a Tweener?)
Thats awful that your vacation was only 5 days! I start the nursing program on Monday. I hate the wait...wish I could of started sooner!

What did/do you dissect in A&P lab?
Cat and sheep heart. It was actually kind of dumb, since we had to be in groups. We only had one cat for the entire semester, and like 4 sheep hearts. Could of done without it, I did more dissections in my zoology class in high school

Tallahassee Community College Fall 2013
I dont think we need them the first day of class, but I have heard maybe the second for a photo thing. I also think we learn about our schedules the day that classes start, I think mostly because we'll be getting our clinical site information. I have heard from another classmate that the only one we will need is the Med Surg book (which sucks because its like 15lbs). Thats all I know though!

Staying in Shape
I've planned out my meal schedule for the entire month, and I hope I can do that every month. I think it will eliminate that frantic urge to find out what to eat, and help curb any desire to just be lazy and order in a pizza. All my planned dinners are relatively inexpensive, and its all homemade. Most of the dinners are going to be made in my crock pot, so I can just let it sit all day until I get home, and voila, done! I just planned out two dinners per week, I can eat the leftovers on the "off cooking" days and if those run out before the next cooking day I can just make some rice and eggs/beans. I've also planned out my lunches. Most of them revolve around buying a whole chicken and slow cooking it, then shredding the white meat. I'm using the shredded chicken to fill in wraps and pitas for the week for lunch and I'm using the wings/thighs for dinner that night. I'm also alternating so that I dont get bored of my food and just order out anyway. Heres an example for two of the weeks in September: Week 1: Lunch: Shredded chicken in pita, with cucumber + cherry tomatoes, tzatziki sauce. Dinner: Slow cooker fajitas, slow cooker peppersteak Week 2: Lunch: Shredded chicken in wrap with shredded cheese, lettuce, caesar dressing. Dinner: slow cooker farmhouse chicken soup, slow cooker cheesy chicken.

Has anyone discouraged you from nursing?
Usually when I tell people I'm going into nursing they ask why I don't just become a doctor instead. My standard response is because I would like to travel, and I dont want to wait until my mid 30's to start doing that.

One more week before I sign over my life!
Orientation barely helped me at all! We just went over the uniform mostly, and were told that we wont know anything about our classes until our first day.

One more week before I sign over my life!
I start the same day as you :) I alternate between being very excited and feeling like I'm going to barf.

How is your sleep?
During school finding sleep is not a problem, but since its the summer and I live in a college town...well you know I've been having a lot of fun most nights. Better to do it now and get it out of my system before school starts!
