Hi everyone! Over the past several months I have been seriourly considering travel nursing. I'm 24, single, no children, and continue to live with my grandparents who raised me and help put me through nursing school. I have never been away from home ...
  2. Vital Signs with Meds

Depends on the Med how often u take vitals. There are usualy protocols u follow as with IVIG, at our facility its treated like a blood transfusion.
  3. Pantoprazole IV question!

I work peds and within the last year our hospital changed to the formula that doesn't require a filter. We run it for about 30-45 minutes. I have never heard it being for more than an hour, even in peds.
  4. Is there such a thing as a "VIP" patient?

I have been an RN for one year and I work at a fairly large private hospital on the pediatric floor. Whenever we admit the child of a family that has contributed financially to our hospital management is always on our backs telling us we need to trea...
  5. Miami RN rates

Hi. I live in Miami. I do not work at Jackson Memorial but I do have a friend that works Neuro ICU there. If you want to work ICU, Jackson is the place to go. Its a teaching hospital, lots of things u see there you will not see anywhere else. Pt rati...
  6. What is task-oriented nursing, and why is it bad?

That Manager sounds like she has something against you. You don't need that kind of treatment, especially if you have worked there for 2 years. If I were you I would apply elsewhere and gain that medsurge experience. OR what about applying in the ER?...
  7. Mandated!

You need to get out of there. You are risking the license you worked so hard to obtain and your patients are not receiving optimal care. Say no to overtime. I don't belive in over time, its not worth it.
  8. Pediatric pain management

Absolutely Not! What kind of pediatric floor is this. There is absolutely no IM's in pediatrics unless it cannot be avoided ESPECIALLY id the patient has IV access. I have been working pediatrics for one year and when I see orders for IM pain meds I ...
  9. No PRN work in Florida?????

How about working through an agency? They pay alot more and place you where they know a nurse is needed. Might be helpful during the slower seasons.
  10. Callin all Floridians.....need some moving info please

I have a friend who makes about 25$ as an LPN through an Agency here in Miami and she was working in a nursing home. Working with an agency might be an option for you
  11. Hospitals and pay around Miami

I currently work at Baptist Hospital in Miami (Kendall area). I started as a new grad a year ago. My starting rate was 21.60/hour and shift differential is between 4-6$ an hour. Orientation for me was 12 weeks because I was hired on the pediatric flo...
  12. looking for examples of self scheduling guidelines

On my floor we have self-scheduling as well. Day shift is required to work every other weekend. Night Shift is required to work four week-end nights a month. Friday night is considered a week-end night. This works out for alot of the nurses who have ...
  13. From school to NICU?

I say go for it. A friend I graduated with started in NICU at the same hospital I work in. Her orientation was 16 weeks. If you are not able to get hired in NICU try a pediatric floor/hospital. Its still very different from NICU but you will have tha...
  14. RN-CAT test...anyone know the reliability??

I took the RN-CAT about 2 months before we graduated. I failed it miserably the first time because I was extremely nervous and put too much pressure on myself. The second time, I passed with a 90%. I passed the NCLEX the first time I took it. My RN-C...
  15. Taking the Kaplan This Wednesday... Please Read!

On the last few days u have before the NCLEX I would just take practice tests, and focus on those strategies Kaplan taught you. Don't go over any other material...you already know it. Remember, the NCLEX tests you on "ideal situations" so the most ab...
  16. Opinion re: getting a new patient at the end of your shift

Depending on how much time I have determines how much of the end of shift admission i complete. I work on a pediatric floor so parents are usually choc-full of questions the moment they arrive. As soon as they get to the room I introduce myself and ...
  17. Medication error

We all make mistakes. Take your time when giving meds, even if the med is late. I've made med errors myself that I know I will never do again. Don't feel stupid, just be more aware.
  18. Question for YOU!

I have been an RN for one year on a pediatric floor and it has been a real eye opener. I have learned so much about th real world and our profession that i do not like. I've had so many horrible shifts and management that only recognizes when you do ...
  19. Is there REALLY such a thing as overachieving?

I was all about getting A's in my pre-req's prior to nursing school. Only because I was in desperate need of scholarship money to continue in nursing school. I took the bus to my community college because I nor my parents could afford a car, let alon...
