  2. I'm sure this becoming standard advice, but while looking volunteer at a free clinic or local hospital one or days a week. That way you can get some experience listed. Now about your resume: Your clinicals listing is really confusing. I'm assuming you're listing clinicals from both the Philippines and locally. So the clinical area are grouped with their hours, then the first bullet item would list the hospitals and clinics you performed the clinicals in. Let's see what someone else think of this idea. I also assume you acquired a degree or certification in the Philippines as well as stateside. So you should list that alongside your BSN degree. In the meantime, this is what turned up. Be sure to review and tailor to your knowledge, skills and abilities: Zero O. 3. All-in-all, not bad. You might consider moving the "License and Certifications" to below your "Professional Profile" section and add a "Skill Highlights" section just below that to show off what you know. About 4-8 top skills that you accumulated from your clinicals and life. Also, consider your degree listing thus: Associate of Science: Some College - Nursing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mth 20xx Anytown, ST . . . * Graduated with honors - College of Nursing . . . * GPA 3.94 Now about your cover letter: It kinda lacks what makes you qualified for the position. Take a gander at this: Dear Human Resources Professional, Please consider me a strong candidate for the Correctional Nurse position advertised in the [website] for [City], [state] at the [facility]. Upon reading this announcement, I wanted to provide you the enclosed resume and recommendations. As you will note from my resume, I hold a RN licensure. Described on each of the supporting documents, I have gained the essential skills from clinical experience and as a tutor providing quality instruction as I earned my degree and license. Thus it is with a comprehensive foundation knowledge that I now seek to interview for and, I hope, serve within the capacities of the Correctional Nurse. Summarizing all that appears on the attached resume, I offer: . . . * Strong assessment skills with the ability to prioritize care based on patient group using the nursing process. . . . * A Highly adaptable personality that transitions easily between different tasks while working individually and with a team. . . . * A demonstrated ability to assess and advocate for patient needs in developing and implementing nursing care plans and maintaining patient medical records. . . . * Efficient response to urgent and complex clinical situations with patients using strong communication and critical thinking skills. However, what my resume does not show is my passion for serving the underserved. My unfailing professionalism and strong ethical center allowed me to provide compassionate care to inmates admitted to my clinical site for advanced procedures, including offenders other students and staff declined to care for. By the same token, my alert and conscientious approach to nursing practice allowed me to always maintain a safe environment for the patient and staff while maintaining firm professional boundaries in interactions with the patient. Though my resume is detailed and comprehensive, it cannot fully demonstrate the manner in which I have achieved success. Character, personality, and the ability to work in a team environment can be demonstrated in a personal meeting. I would welcome an interview at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration. I am certain that I would become a valuable addition to your staff. Thank you for your valued time, Some Person
  4. Normally, one with less than five years in the profession would have to be one page. But I'd be hard-pressed to recommend it since even the additional work experience is professional-oriented. So I've structured this as two pages so to show how one is organized. And since you're going for two pages of related material, might as well include your clinicals as your professional experence isn't nursing yet. Nowdays, one doesn't include "references on demand" as it's assumed you're going to ask when to provide them during the interview, thus getting a guage where you're at for the final consideration phase. Also, be sure to turn your "job duties" into "accomplishments". So all it needs is a bit of tweeking: Miss Rosehips, RN 1234 North Blank Ave. • Blank, WS 91234 • (000) 123-4567 • [email protected] Customer-Service Oriented Registered Nurse A professional caregiver and patient advocate skilled in critical thinking, customer service, collaboration, communication, and competent evidence-based care. 5. Normally it would be listed in an "Affiliations" section. In most cases, a simple inventory of your affiliations, presented in order of importance, will suffice. When your involvement included election to an office or other leadership position, mention the title either before or after the organization, but be consistant. If you held an office but are no longer in that office, preface the title with "past." It's not necessary to include the date when you joined each organization. If you need to save space, you can list the organizations in paragraph form with ";" seperating each organization. Examples are: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Society of Pediatric Nurses Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing Oncology Nursing Society National Association of School Nurses NSNA (National Student Nurses Association) active member, current National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners Officer in Association of Womens Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
  6. It's a bit meandering. You should focus on how you qualify for the position. Look over the ad and see how your cover letter answers the ad, point by point. In the meantime, look this over and see what you think: Dear Human Resources Professional, I am pleased to learn of your need for an RN Case Manager, as my career goals and expertise are directly in line with this opportunity. My experience and education have provided me with excellent knowledge of HIV/AIDS treatment practices, acute patient care, family relations, staff development and other relevant skills of an effective team member. The following are highlights of my qualifications and accomplishments: . . . * Previous experience in working with HIV/AIDS patients. . . . * Strong understanding about the care delivery system insuring the correct resources are used in the most efficient manner while containing costs. . . . * Possess excellent people management skills along with strong communication skills which have immensely helped me in this line of work. . . . * Excellent organizational, documentation and assessment skills with the ability to multitask. . . . * Adherence to regulations, guidelines, and quality assurance on a unit. In my position, HIV/AIDS patients I've worked with are immensely vulnerable, yet spirited and strong. From them I learned more about compassion and strength than from any other type of patient and like to excel at the next level in the field. I became a nurse because of my need to help people and my desire to implement positive changes. Though, I enjoy bedside nursing, I know I will be able to make the greatest impact through the business side of nursing as a case manager because of my innate qualities. Thank you for your valued time,
  7. Alright, get ye back to a refresher course. Especially after being out of practice for more than three-four years. Check your BON if they offer or refer a refresher program. If you have the funding or arrange it, check around to find a college that offers both theory and clinical refresher package, similar to this: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/wdce/hsi/nurserefresher.html Also scout your workforce centers to see if one caters to professionals. Most don't and the one that does may not be in your county, meaning their ability to help may be restricted to reviewing resumes and announce workshops that professionals would use to, say, apply for federal jobs. But check anyway and use that in conjunction with your local workforce center which may be more blue-collar. In the meantime, parents who have been out of the workforce for a number of years and have minimal alternative experience such as volunteer work may need a functional resume. Although functional resumes are not preferred by hiring managers, this format allows you to emphasize your skills while downplaying your employment history. Use your cover letter to briefly explain your recent gap, but emphasize that you have kept your skills up to date and are energized to return to the workforce. You can highlight the following activities on your resume: * Volunteer/Community Involvement (PTA, Charity Work, Fund-raisers): Just because you weren't paid doesn't make the experience any less valuable, so treat volunteer work like you would a paid position on your resume. If you held leadership roles or made a difference to your organizations, tout your accomplishments and the key skills developed. You can include volunteer work in your Work Experience section to cover the employment gap. * Continuing Education: Show that you've kept your skills refreshed through courses, online learning and/or independent study. * Freelance Projects: If you've done consulting/freelance work that's related to your job target, include project highlights in your Work Experience section. * Professional Development: Demonstrate your commitment to the field by including membership in professional organizations and participation in conferences. * Work-at-Home/Self-Employment: Even if you worked part-time for yourself or your partner, include the experience on your resume. And most importantly, plan how you'll describe your employment gap in your interviews, because you will be asked about it. Answer with pride and confidence (but not too much personal detail), and communicate to the employer that you're ready and enthusiastic about making the transition back into the workforce. And speaking of volunteer work, start looking into a free clinic position to ease you back into the saddle. One or two times a week while job-hunting should help while giving you a local reference and something to add to your resume. Once you get several months experience in, you can move the Community Service section above your Education & Training to show the recent experience. To be truthful, be prepared for a hard slug in this economy. In the meantime, look this over for ideas on your resume: Mary D. 8. Just because the employer no longer exists now does not take away from the fact that it did exist in a certain location previously. In order to help the prospective employer check the information listed on the resume, you may wish to include any additional contact information you have for your former employer. For example, if you retain a functioning number for your supervisor, you may wish to include that number, with an addendum stating that the company is defunct, but that this person was your former boss. When you speak with your prospective employer, feel free to mention that your former employer no longer exists and ask whether there is any additional information you can provide to demonstrate that you held the position. This will not only allow the employer to resolve any questions he has, but it will make you appear forthright and honest. Good luck!

  13. Did you go through clinicals? If so, then you gotten some experience. Unless a hospital requires a certain number of months of experience, remember you did get clinical experience in school, so you should emphasize that in your applications. It may not be considered really adequate by some, but it does count as experience. Your resume should probably provide some detail about your clinical experience -- think about things that you did such as monitoring IVs, assessing patients, pre-operative preparations, patient education. Your passion for nursing should come through which will help your resume stand apart from the rest. The resume should show that you are an eager learner, and comment on your professional progression as you went through school -- gaining facts, experience, knowledge, and yes perhaps some wisdom along the way. Think about how you think about things now compared to back when you applied to nursing school. The best managers look for a combination of technical enthusiasm and the maturity to deal with the sometimes difficult tasks of working with patients, a diverse staff and exacting physicians. Hospitals want to know what types of clinical rotations you’ve been through, and where you did them. So listing clinical rotations will demonstrate your experience base. To make it even stronger: • Emphasize areas in which you have special interest. • Highlight elements that distinguish you from others doing similar rotations. Did you excel in particular aspects of your work? Examples include establishing rapport with patients, meticulous attention to detail in suturing, or responding well in crisis situations.
  14. Well, this is different: usually everybody is trying to get out of school, this one is going into the fire. Good and congrats on your choice. As far as I know, the same resume rules used for applying for a job also applies to a school resume. The main thing is to show you have what it takes to complete the program and score a career. Attached those soft skills that you seem to have based on the positions you held. Be sure to review and tailor to your true skills, knowledge and abilities as some of this is a bit generic. 15. The overall structure is not too bad. Individual issues are: 1. Consider turning your objective statement into a professional/branding statement, followed by a professional profile section to expand on. 2. Use one- to two- sentence bullet points on your clinical experience and work experience to make it simplier for the employer to read. An employer would have about seven seconds to scan a resume to decide which pile to put it in. So make it easy for yours to get a second read. 3. Consider listing the hours on your clinical experience rotations. It shows an attention to detail. Also consider turning your duty listings into accomplishments that'll offer value to the employer.
  16. Though simplified, you can look over this cover to gain ideas on improving yours. The main thing is to keep it pithy: Je S07 123 Street * City, ST 12345 * (000) 555-5309 * [email protected] June x, 2013 XX Hospital 0888 XX St.X, XX Zip code Dear Human Resources Professional, Please consider me a strong candidate for the Graduate Nurse position in the Critical Care-ICU unit advertised in the XX website. Upon reading this announcement, I wanted to provide you the enclosed resume, recommendations, and transcripts. As you will note from my resume, I hold a bachelor degree in Nursing, achieving the President's Honor Roll, and am scheduled to complete NCLEX this July. Described on each of the supporting documents, I have gained the essential skills in order to provide quality patient care, becoming valued from my instructors. Thus it is with a comprehensive foundation knowledge and clinical experience that I now seek to interview for and, I hope, serve within the capacities of the Graduate Nurse. My qualifications include, but not limited to, the following: . . . * A wide variety of working in different settings such as critical care, cardiac, and maternal/child. . . . * Bilingual skills and associated cultural awareness provides quality patient care to a diverse group of clients. . . . * Hospice volunteer and casher positions provided considerable experience in working with those in need. When I rotated to the Neuro-ICU, I knew I found my true calling in ICU settings. While there, I was able to provide care to patients with neurological critical conditions. I provided mechanical ventilation care, oral care, checked residuals on patients placed on tube feedings, and performed neurological assessments. The work was demanding, but found great satisfaction. Respectfully yours, Je S07 (000) 555 5309 [email protected] enclosures

  22. Just on a lark, decided to work this one up into a federal resume format just to see how big these things can get. Did put a lot of fluff in to show the structure. Assumed silkysteph wasn't hired through a agency but was an independent contractor as a Nanny while attending school in CA and waited tables during the summer break while back home. Remember to go though the vacancy announcement and identify the buzzwords they're looking for to put in your "Special Skills Highlights". And, yes redundancy is permitted in a federal resume, so the same buzzwords can appear in both the "Skills Highlights" and "Clinical Experience" and/or "Work Experience" So I picked a form found on the web and used it as a template to build this, enjoy: Silky Steph,RN 5555 Here Avenue • San Jose, CA 20901 • (559) XXX-XXXX • [email protected] ________________________________________________________________________ OBJECTIVE Vacancy Announcement # 000000000 POSITON APPLIED FOR: Clinical Nurse Specialist I (GS-?) _______________________________________________________________________ PROFILE Social Security Number: 000-00-0000 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 23. Haven't done a federal resume format yet, but from what I researched on the web it's very different than one for a private-sector resume. For openers, a new-grad nurse federal resume is about three pages minimum. Also, more specific information is required for a federal resume; for example, you will need to add in salary information (especially for your most recent position) and will indicate whether or not you are eligible for Veteran's Preference. In addition, you are expected to include more detail on job responsibilities and accomplishments, especially those that are relevant to the position for which the application is being prepared. Therefore, a federal resume can be much longer than a traditional resume. Found one Registered Nurse federal resume example starting on page 9 at http://www.nps.gov/training/tel/Guides/Federal_Resume_pg_20060407.pdf . Also one among several examples at Download Free Federal Resume Samples Here . A template for a federal resume found at at http://images.military.com/ContentFiles/FedResHandbook.pdf . Haven't found one for a new-grad showing clinical rotation details but, based on what's seen with the other federal resumes, expect that to get as detailed as a job position. Same rules apply: List your clinical experiences just after your education, but with more details (feds love details): Another thing: Seperate out you liciences and certifications from your education section into its own section just under your profile. You want to make it easy for your employer to find your qualifications. And list your coursework: LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS Registered Nurse - Maryland Board of Nursing, Baltimore, MD 3/20xx, License number Basic Life Support (BLS) certified - Rescue One Training for Life Inc. 24. The professional experience section needs simple statements and project accomplishments rather than job duties. The structure of a good accomplishment statement is: WHAT You Did Is The First Piece Of Your Three-Part Accomplishment [ What = . . . ed ]. You briefly describe the event. It is preceded by a power past participle (ending in “ . . . ed:”, for example: developed, created, managed, directed, etc.) describing your role in the event. If you're still working at the job, then use the present participle. HOW You Did It Is The Second Piece Of Your Three-Part Accomplishment [ How = . . . ing ]. briefly describe what you did, preceded by a power ". . . ing" verb form (analyzing, directing, teaching, researching, etc.). RESULTS Is The Third Part of your Three-Part Accomplishment [ Results = . . . ing ]. Briefly review of the time or money that was saved, the degree of improved quality, preceded by a power ". . . ing" word (saving, improving, increasing, decreasing, etc.). The “ing” ending of words indicates the results are current or ongoing. Tried to break up the large sentences into simple ones and made them into accomplishments. But look them over and tailor to your actual accomplishments. One thing you want look over is what skills, knowledge, and abilities the ad is looking for and tailor your branding statement, professional profile and skill highlights accordingly. I'm assuming your Crown Bay positions were a internal promotion and configure it to reflect that. So here's something to get you thinking: Maria Cassandra Magbitang, RN BSN 2019 Shoreline Drive Unit 220 • Alameda, CA 94501 • (510) 555-9999 • [email protected] Self-starting Registered Nurse 3 years experience being highly productive, efficient, and able to work with less supervision in a fast pace environment. 25. "PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE" is like an in-depth interview, so how are you going to talk to your future employer? This is where you provide proof about what you've said in the top part of the resume and is the most technical part of the resume. Keep your experience tightly focused on your desired position. When writing your resume, use action verbs, focus on results, and use quantitative examples. You have two sources already: your skill highlights and your previous job performance reviews. Nurses thrive on accomplishments as they are on the road to achieving something every day due to the nature of their job. They have so much on their plate owing to the fact that every day is a day with different challenges. So, Lesson One: The minute you start a new job, start keeping track of your accomplishments. Keep a log in a little notebook, or on index cards, in a computer database, on a little tape recorder, or on your smart phone or other device. But what about all the jobs that have gone by in which you haven't recorded your accomplishments? Lesson Two: Develop a brainstorming worksheet: 1. Prepare an accomplishment inventory. To do this, list all jobs, followed by job duties. 2. Consider accomplishments you achieved in each job, or regarding each job duty if possible. You may believe that you have not accomplished much; however, completing this exercise will help you gain confidence and recognize your achievements. Spend time on this project, adding to your list of accomplishments over the period of a few days. Although you will not use all these accomplishments, it will prepare you for your interview and help sell your skills to your prospective employer 3. If you are having difficulty finding accomplishments, use the Situation/Task-Action-Results (STAR) technique. You can further break down an action as being: Action = Action Verb + Job Skills; And a job skill as being: Job Skill = Keyword + Keyword + … . It is important to break down your accomplishment statements into their base parts so that you can quickly and easily choose what statements to use in a resume tailored for the company and position that you are applying for. 4. Still having difficulty with your accomplishments? Consider the following: a. What was your impact on time, money, quality and/or customer service? b. What other impact did your actions have on the project or situation? c. Why is this important as an achievement? d. How do you know it 1) Saved time or money? 2) Increased profit/revenues? 3) Decreased errors? e. Describe the struggle to achieve the result. f. What changed after completion of the task? g. What was the scope, depth or breadth of each segment of your accomplishment? 5. Categorize accomplishments by importance. It may be helpful to think in baseball terms. Place each accomplishment in a category for homeruns, triples, doubles, or singles. You should include only homeruns and triples on your résumé. To a great extent, if a job activity cannot be portrayed as an accomplishment, it may not be worthy of mention in your resume, cover letter, or in an interview. Now for the meat and potatoes: actually writing an accomplishment. An accomplishment is a three-part statement that summarizes a noteworthy, work-related event, in a way that is generally understandable and believable, while . . . • communicating the event in a synopsis of what happened, • briefly explaining how it took place, and • being specific about the beneficial result it produced. You write an accomplishment in 14 to 20 words, two (no more than three) typewritten lines (no smaller than 10-11 pt. type), makes no reference to the employer or organization name, and minimizes industry-specific jargon or acronyms. WHAT You Did Is The First Piece Of Your Three-Part Accomplishment [ What = . . . Example of a Complete Accomplishment: Streamlined production methods, designing revolutionary automated testing equipment to eliminate work bottleneck, reducing manufacturing labor cost by 17%. So you start with an ACTION, and end with a RESULT Here's some other CNA-related accomplishments found around the web to get your little grey cells percolating: Provide high-quality patient care as an in-demand per-diem CNA within surgical, acute-care, rehabilitation, home-healthcare and nursing-home settings. Preserve patient dignity and minimize discomfort while carrying out duties such as bedpan changes, diapering, emptying drainage bags and bathing. Provided nursing assistance to residents in a 120-bed long-term-care facility. Assisted residents with activities of daily living including helping with meals, transferring using assistive devices, bathing, dressing and grooming. Displayed strong clinical skills in assessing vital signs, performing lab draws and glucose checks, and providing pre- and post-operative care. Adhered to safety guidelines; completed hospital’s three-hour Patient Safety Training Program. Ensured the accurate, timely flow of information by maintaining thorough patient records and updating healthcare team on patients’ status.
