  1. This is how I feel after our meeting with a past SALPN president. I do not feel that patient safety is being challenged. RNs need to stay in their own lane and not try and tell LPNs what their scope of practice is. It is not the fault of the LPNs th...
  2. The union(SUN) should have nothing to do with professional association (SALPN). What does the SRNA have to say?
  3. difference between a PSW and a LPN

Once you go to school you will see the difference between a PSW and a LPN. There is no amount of telling people that can or will convince them if they are so positive that LPNs are just glorified aides. I can tell you that coming back to work as a CC...
  4. Your experince while in LPN School

Congratulations on getting accepted. I'm a Canadian pn student. I have 3 months left once we come back from summer vacation. The last year and a half has been intense. Its hard to even describe it. I take notes but don't make note cards. You need to ...
  5. Typical time to take?

I graduate in November and will be writing in January. I'm not waiting.
  6. Is it time to give up?

A health authority is not a profession it's an area. In my province there are 8(I think) health authorities.
  7. Should I start applying to job postings?

I voted yes. I don't graduate until Nov but we've already been told to start applying for jobs. I have been offered to work casual as a grad nurse when November comes. I'm also applying at other locations in my health region this summer.
  8. What Do You Eat?

Anything I can scarf down quickly that won't give me hiccups.
  9. Best approach to nursing school

I personally think if you're planning on getting the degree just do that right from the start. You never know what life will throw at you and if you stop you may never have the chance to go back.
  10. To be or not to be an LPN?

There are still jobs out there for sure. In my area, I'm going to graduate in November and I already have a job waiting for me.
  11. I wouldn't go that far. CCAs are a very important part of the nursing team who work their butts off every day. They do charting, they give report, they do the personal care (that as a rpn is included in your nursing duties), they are our eyes and ear...
  12. It's Not Fair!

You still get to write if you miss a test? We get a 0. It would frustrate me also if people got to write a week later.
  13. Will the job market for nurses EVER improve in Canada?

She said "us older nurses" not US older nurses. I know it can be difficult to read especially with all the acronyms in the cyber world.
  14. Job shadowing in Eastern Ontario

I'm not sure what happens there but I know in my ltc facility they do get IV lines and lpns do insert IVs, hang medications and maintain them.
  15. I wonder who does the naming, is it the province? They just changed our name from SCA(special care aide) to CCA(continuing care assistant). It was funny to me because I was taking that 10 month course for CCA to become a SCA. Now I walk around work an...
  16. Psych nursing outside of ontario.

I have heard that the psych hospital here is phasing out lpns. We've been told we can't preceptor there because they do not follow lpn scope of practice. They have some there now but as they move on those positions are going to rpns.
  17. Do you think eating in the classroom is rude?

There is no food that I have smelled that is worse than the smell of 22 people sick with norovirus.
  18. No. I like texts when we're studying. We will quiz each other via text. There are 12 in my class and we don't have a study group.
  19. Do you think eating in the classroom is rude?

As an aside note. We're in clinicals this month and my clinical partner and I filled up the nurses' snack cupboard as a thank you. They were awesome to us.
  20. Do you think eating in the classroom is rude?

We don't have that rule in class only in our lab. We are encouraged to bring healthy snacks to eat to keep our blood sugar steady and focused in class. If we aren't hungry and desperately waiting for a break to eat, we learn more efficiently. Efficie...
  21. What are you doing summer break?

I'm going back to my CCA job working nights (looking forward to only working 13 times a month instead of Monday to Friday.) Read, go to the beach, play with my kids, run more.
  22. Number of students start to end

We started with 14. A year and a half later we have 12. I'm pretty sure all 12 of us will graduate in November.
  23. new grad considering moving to Saskatoon

The last I heard Saskatoon had a hiring freeze. I got the graduate retention program for my cca but I'm not sure if you have to actually go to school in sk to get it. I am pretty sure I'll get the retention bonus when I graduate nursing school also.
  24. Nurse Salary?

You should be able to Google and find this information. In my province all the collective agreements and therefore all the wages are posted online.
  25. Well actually we just got a raise. Healthcare providers are paid well in our province. Our wages are negotiated by the unions.
