  1. my first quizes for my semester....

I use Study Blue, Quizlet, also the ATI books (if your program uses them) are invaluable. See if your textbooks have practice exams online. Mine do and the questions are very similar to the ones in class.
  2. what did you do before that you miss now?

I miss gardening and taking care of my barnyard friends. I can't wait for spring maybe I can take an hour or two on clinical days to spend time out in the fields, digging my hands in the soil. I had no time in the fall to set anything for winter harv...

If you have a copy of the syllabus from your program, go through it, read the book, take notes as if you were still in and if you are inclined do drug cards. There are a plethora of posted syllabi and course supplements all over the Internet so I wou...
  4. Supplies/Tips for LPN School

Get the digital books if you are tech savvy. I love strolling into class with just my kindle or being able to read textbooks on my iPhone no matter where I am. Plus making study reviews is a snap when you can integrate text or make diagrams using the...
  5. Anyone else find nursing school not as tough?

You are not alone! I am in month 5 of 10 and my average is a 96 without much effort or sacrifice on the home front. I am thinking about picking up a job to get my foot in the door at a local hospital that hires LPNs. I am already looking at the next ...

Get your books early. Read read read. I can't stress this enough. Get on Khan Academy and brush up on your mathematics (the have a great video on nursing calculations). If you start now you can get through a lot of material without being confined to ...
  8. I am in month 4 of a 10 month program. After sticking it out without working for the first phase I am going to seek employment after the holidays because it is just not as hard as I was told. About half of my class is working at least part time, and ...
  9. Dosage question ;)

PookyP - there's a great video for drug dosages from Khan Academy, they don't have much yet but it's a solid start. http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/ratios-proportions/v/unit-conversion-example--drug-dosage Also if anyone needs PN math help j...
  10. Dosage question ;)

This is the way I did it... I just passed my Pharmacology Mathematics exam last week 100%. Atropine is a gr 1 = 60mg (the 64.8 standard has been phased out it seems and gr 1 = 65mg only applies to Acetaminophen and Iron -- as per my instructor). gr 1...
  11. White uniform

I wear undershirts under my whites so there's no undergarments visible -and- extends the life of your whites. Now if only I could keep my clogs white!
  12. School starts Tuesday!

I cannot agree with the OP enough! I take a few hours every Sunday to make meals ahead for the week for the household. I find soups are great for packed adult lunches so I make two batches of soup (this week featured Potato Leek & Roasted Corn wi...
  13. How my first day went...

Friday was my first day and it was not overwhelming at all. My instructor is very keen on combating the perception that nurses 'eat their young' which is really inspiring IMHO. We had photos taken, started with our time-clock login/logout (the progr...
  14. How my first day went...

This was so unlike my experience. My BOCES orientation was pretty much going over the handbook, signing paperwork, turning in our homework, and the same material that was covered in the information session / acceptance packet. No games, icebreakers o...
  15. Finally...School starts in the morning!

I start tomorrow too! I haven't been able to sleep for days. I am pretty sure I will not be sleeping tonight either. Today I went in to make sure all my ducks were in a row -- talk about being anxious! On the plus side all this nocturnal wakefulness ...
  16. Panic Panic Panic Time!!!!

You're more than welcome! We BOCES people need to help each other out! Also, assess the content of each book required and the likelihood you'll need them while you prep for the boards. That's why I chose to buy Lippingcott's Manual of Nursing Practi...
  17. Panic Panic Panic Time!!!!

Use CourseSmart. I got some of my books rented through them. A lot of online textbook vendors feature a 7day e-book access while you wait for your books to arrive. If you do use CourseSmart be advised some texts are only available as a 180-day rental...
  18. How do you study?

Some of my study aids: - I have a bundle of colored highlighters, I use different colors for different things (blue for exam, yellow for important, pink for 'needs clarification', olive for 'research'. What I am starting now is separating systems by ...
  19. What to study next?

I wish I had my coursework calendar i would have started already! One more week!
  20. What to study next?

Also, work on your flash cards! I would get Pharm, Med-Surg & A&P down now and casually work on memorization throughout the day. The more time you have with the material the better right?
  21. How long do you go to clinicals?

My 10 month LPN program starts clinicals week 5 1x a week then bumps up to 2x a week for 8+hrs each day.
  22. Questioning my decision on LPN program...

What NathifaLR said could not be more correct -- take a deep cleansing breath. There will always be things that break, money that needs spending and other crises that ran down upon our lives, particularly when one is at the cusp of great change. Is L...
  23. Feel like a hippocrit when doing health teaching

At the time of this post I am still in the obese range. I have found that working on how I see myself is just as important as eating better and moving more. I work on my self-image like it's another necessary task to my day (I use SuperBetter). If yo...
  24. Smoking and the Nursing Student

I am a lifetime non-smoker and I can tell when a patient smokes. It is excreted out of your pores, you exhale traces out for days after you've had a smoke -- it really is pervasive. My DF was a two pack a day smoker and he 'quit' by switching to ele...
  25. Low demand for LVNs? How true?

From what I have seen as an EMT in NY, PA & NJ LPN are in medium to high demand. Most NYC hospitals still hire LPNs ($25/hr) and if you have the right skills LTC in NJ pays quite well. Good luck!
