  1. RCIS

Any Rn's taken the RCIS exam? I'm considering taking it early next year and going to get started studying now. I also plan to take the Glowacki and Summers review course. If you've taken it how hard was it and how did you prepare? How long did it tak...
  2. Interview in cath lab, what should I know?

Biggest things we look for in coworkers is attitude, work ethics, and drive to learn. I'd like to hear why you want to work in the cath lab. It's extremely tough to learn all required and teamwork is so much more important than in floor nursing. We w...
  3. Concerned about social media use by nurses, non-hospital staff

If you're not participating and no one is messaging you, I believe it's really no concern of yours. Parents/patients can't violate their own hipaa rights. You don't really know what was shared. It's even possible to keep someone somewhat updated an...
  4. PICC Nurse in 2 months?

Would you mind sharing your resource suggestions with me? Things beyond insertion are where my training has lacked. Thanks!
  5. PICC Nurse in 2 months?

It really just depends on the number of piccs you'll get to put in during those 2 months. Our method of teaching is pretty much: do online training, watch 3, do 3 with someone watching, then solo depending on comfort level. My first several solo picc...
  6. LPN wanting to working in Ob/gyn

I don't think it's legally possible to work as an LPN in L&D. What about a ob/gyn Dr's office? That would be a possibility. We have some lpn's that work mother/baby at our hospital while working on their RN.
  7. Should I work tomorrow?

Depends on your policy. Our policy on sick time makes it not in our best interest to try to come in to work when we possibly may have to miss work if we end up being sicker than we think. We must use 2 PTO days before our sick pay starts. If we cloc...
  8. I don't think i can be around this co-worker anymore.

He was counseled about the first incident and it doesn't sound like he did anything wrong the second. Some people are very touchy without realizing how it could make someone uncomfortable. Since he knows now, he should never lay a hand on you again....
  9. Called off too many times?

If you're scheduled to work, go to work. Why are you calling off? Better things to do? If you value your job at all (even if you don't), be a good employee and don't screw over your coworkers.
  10. What do you hate about nursing and why?

I hate that people with no experience in patient care wearing suits with business degrees make decisions about how we do our job.
  11. Overtime

I've worked 0630-midnight several times. But I work in Cath Lab (single shift) and we have no relief coming. We work til we're done.
  12. Right Coronary VF

Yeah, bradycardia/and the like is much more common than ventricular arrhythmias with injection of the right. Great thoughts, you may be right.. I just know I hold my breath a little with initial injections of the right.
  13. Right Coronary VF

RCA injection is much more likely to cause ventricular arrhythmias (still rare). I just think irritation (contrast) of the electrical system (fed mostly by the right) is the cause, disruption in the electrical pathway causing the disorganized activit...
  14. Amiodarone

I would never hold amiodarone without a specific "this time, this patient" order. I would be very surprised to hear any cardiologist wanting a single dose held for a one time low hr/bp. I wouldn't even call a dr over it.
  15. Right Coronary VF

The sa and av node is supplied by the right and much more likely to cause arrhythmias, from what I've witnessed. The conus branch can be cannulated and cause us nurses to have some arrhythmias, too. We did just have a complete hear...
  16. I'd choose 1:3 with no pct's over 1:4-5 with minimal pct's any day. Vote no... sounds like you're trading nurses for techs and that's not a good trade.
  17. Employee Complaint

At our hospital, even lpn's cant draw from a picc (which is preposterous). I would never consider any phlebotomist to be able to. Also, NS is considered a med. Sounds pretty weird for her to complain about the situation, you probably really sound...
  18. Fluid overload care plan

"Nursing Diagnosis #1 Decreased cardiac output R/T alteration in heart rate and rhythm AEB EKG showing abnormalities noted with no distinguishing P waves." I'll take a stab at this one. Your AEB (evidence/proof) should be pt symptoms/data that suppor...
  19. PEG Tube Residual

I learned in nursing school "it's not yours, put it back". I'd document the family request. Maybe pass along to day shift the request and how you handled it. I don't know why your hospital policy is to discard, I agree with the family. (And they soun...
  20. Patient Diagnosis help

One of the vital signs is obviously far out of normal range. Which one?
  21. Gave Blood transfusion too fast maybe?

I'd say a almost 50% increase in the hgb level is pretty good. Really, 3.2 is sooooo low, it's gonna take more than 1 unit to get it back up to normal. Plus, I've noticed the next day levels to even be a little higher after a transfusion. You didn't...
  22. I think you must be misunderstanding your nurse friend. The only reason I can think of that would require her to go back for her Lpn would be that she did not graduate with her bsn, did not pass the nclex, and/or did not get license. (And you're righ...
  23. Military wife trying to plan nursing school

I don't know if you know, but lots of cc adn programs are tougher (more competitive) to get into than bsn programs. I would vote hold on the bachelors now and get into a bsn program. If you must take classes, take prerequisites for the bsn you're ult...
  24. 1.5x pay, and general salary question

I'd say $22-25per hr is what a new grad will be offered if your lucky.
  25. 1.5x pay, and general salary question

We only get 1.5x pay when we go over 40hrs. I've worked 18h shifts and had no extra pay on my check . I'm in southern middle tn.
