  1. As a Canadian I don't know what you guys are talking about.
  2. Too soon to leave new job?

Life is so short girl, and no disrespect to the previous posters but don't ever pass up an opportunity that piques your interest. Don't ever stay somewhere just because you feel guilty. Do what is good for you, do what makes you happy, and enjoy this...
  3. Help! priority action for pulmonary embolism

You have already "assessed" that the patient is on Heparin, is having SOB, and chest pain. You "suspect" a pulmonary embolism. Now what are your actions?
  4. AHS Hiring Freeze .

I agree with Fiona, grieve everything. It makes me sick knowing that AHS is standing behind executive bonuses while asking front line employees to make "compromises during this lean fiscal time". To hell with them, grieve absolutely everything, ever...
  5. Do you think I need to appeal

If your file expired, you will have to bring it back up to date. Once your file is renewed, it's a bonus you no longer have to complete one of the requirements, because it has been removed. Your best bet is to keep in touch with the college and mak...
  6. Cna's gone wild!!

I'm not a DON but I am in a Supervisory role on my floor. Through trial and error I have found that laying out my expectations in black and white at the beginning of a shift works well. This is especially important when working with new or unfamili...
  7. Tips for a New Cna!!!

I don't know where you guys work but 10 to one sounds ridiculous to me. I have no idea how you can have ten residents properly washed, lotions applied, mouth care done, hair brushed, and shaved, and down for breakfast which usually starts around 8-83...
  8. Saline Lock

Yes where I am from an order is required. You don't want to be the nurse that pulled the lock only to have the Doc. Reorder fluids, and everyone flips a bird because their a hard poke. Always cover your butt. And also a little off topic, for any n...
  9. How has becoming a nurse changed your life?

Nursing has stolen some of my empathy, and I miss the time when things used to make me scared or happy or sad. Now I'm a little desensitized. However I love nursing and I would never change professions.
  10. Nurse and CNA argument at the end of my shift

I was a CNA and now I am a nurse. If you were off shift girl, you were off shift. As far as I'm concerned you reported what needed to be done, and the nurse dropped the ball. Takes 2 minutes to change an ostomy bag, report could have waited.
  11. Witnessed unsterile procedure and feeling terrible about it

I like your suggestion of an in service preferably mandatory. As for " stay out of it" That's not very sound advice, they pay you to advocate for, use and be held accountable to a standard, not look the other way, even if a patient wasn't harmed.
  12. Good god, life is to short! You want the new job offer? Take it girl! Worry about the minor details later, if they question you after your background check, give the rationale you gave us. No moral dilemma here.
  13. Alberta or manitoba?

I was hired on at three different sites in northern Alberta within 6 months of moving there. The jobs are out there. My advice, don't be picky, and expect to do your time before you end up in that "perfect position".
  14. How to save my hands

The Body Shop hemp hand repair lotion!
  15. first lpn check

I bought my dog Calli a pink matching collar and leash...how incredibly lame, but was I ever proud of that ridiculously expensive leash.
  16. Health care a "right" or a "privilege"?

Healthcare is a right you should feel privileged to have. Once you start mashing it up to determine if someone deserves access to it ( for example personal negligence) it gets messy. I believe that it's an all for one, one for all type deal. Ackno...
  17. What do I need for nursing school?

Before I started using the lotion, my hands were in terrible shape, cracked and bleeding on a regular basis, itchy. Now they are fantastics, no itching or cracking, thanks to the hemp lotion. I carry the RN notes pocket guide, and the Davis drug gu...
  18. Awkward situation while putting in 2 weeks notice

Honesty is always the best policy. I had a similar situation and when I was asked about my previous employment by a potential employer, I said "you know what I'm going to be honest I had to leave because of scheduling conflicts and the manager was n...
  19. What do I need for nursing school?

Here is a list of things I wish someone Told me to bring to clinical in my nursing bag: gum (it helps to chew gum after you have smelled something particularly terrible, not while working of course) hand lotion ( I recommend body shop hemp lotion, s...
  20. tell me about your most embarrassing job interview!

I said what ended up sounding like I would call a code blue on an O2 sat of 88%. I only remember half the interview, because I had come off my fifth night shift right to the interview. Obviously not on my "A" game. Needless to say, I did not get th...
  21. is your efficiency misinterpreted as lazy ?

As long as you check in with co workers and everybody is on an even keel, especially on night shift, taking the downtime to learn or do quiet stuff like stock and tidy, it's really no big deal. Just always offer your free time to help first.
  22. Nursing Students: What do you think of your instructors?

The best instructors I have had, could control their classroom, and didn't allow lectures to be carried away with hypothetical question periods. I sat through way too many hours of "well my great aunt had..." or " what if ( insert ridiculous off top...
  23. LPN or straight to RN

If you can swing it, do your RN degree. Although transitioning from LPN to RN is rewarding and gives you experience, take it from me, it would be worth your while to just complete your RN right away. If your in the position to do it of course.
  24. RN waitlist in BC? Where do I start?

You can bridge through OK UBC and get admittance to second year. There are still several pre-reqs but lots can be done online.
  25. Do you think my boss is going to fire me? Advice please!

I suggest you go to the meeting, because it is inevitable. Secondly if you really feel that you did everything you could for that resident, and you felt comfortable with your nursing decisions, then you need to stand behind them adamantly. I am not...
