    1. What is it like to work nightshift? I rotate shifts. Nights can be just as busy as days, but with less people/interruptions around. 2. Can you tell me a little about your sleeping habit before a night shift? I keep myself on a night shift sleep s...

  4. What Do Hospitals Look At For New Grads?

Hospitals know what you did in nursing school -- important to note on your resume would be the medical centers you rotated through for which rotations - This can give the institution of the scope of your experience in nursing school ie at large resea...
  5. Should You Commute To Nursing School?

It definitely IS possible! Bravo to you for making that long commute work. It shows a ton of determination to be able to pull that off! I did the train/bus game during nursing school... 1.5 hours in the weekday AM's when trains ran frequently, and 2 ...
  6. I agree 100% with Hygiene Queen! Psych has everything to do with the nurse-patient interaction. Even on straight psych floors, nursing skills still pop up. Also, many psych patients are even more acutely aware of what you're doing, which could lead t...
  7. How did/do you pay for nursing school?

A combination of: academic scholarships, state/federal grants, loans, and a relatively small amount of help from my parents. Thankfully, I came out not too far in debt!
  8. NCLEX TOMORROW!!!

    Best of luck!
  9. How exactly do you "sell" yourself?

Networking can be something as simple as mentioning that you're a nurse looking for a job to people you meet. You never know who might know, or be someone who can help you on your journey. As far as selling yourself, I strongly recommend putting tog...
  10. I kept my personal life private for the most part. However, I did meet quite a few close friends who had similar backgrounds as me, and opened up to them about my life in general. Those friendships will truly last a lifetime. I wouldn't keep your pe...
  11. There is always one..

There really is always one. I found it to be worse at the beginning of my program, when overall there were more questions, anxiety, and less self-directed learning going on. I definitely agree with others about addressing the professor about your (ve...
  12. Panic Panic Panic Time!!!!

First of all, take a deep breath. I'd look at your syllabi, and see which books are being used within the first week or two of class. These ones, you might need to purchase from the bookstore. If it's not being used until later in the semester, purc...
  13. Why I Became a Nurse: Discovering My Dream Job

Stories like this make me smile, and truly lighten up the at times bleak stories shared on AN. Thank you for sharing!
  14. Poll to " former" new grads. How did you land that 1st job?

I did a clinical rotation at the facility where I was hired, but not on the same unit. I applied online, like everyone else, and was selected for a panel interview, and then a unit interview, after which I was offered the job. For me, it wasn't netwo...
  15. Feeling overwhelmed..

Take this opportunity to look back upon what you HAVE accomplished so far. You have made it through your pre-requisites, into nursing school, and into the hospital to learn to take care of patients. Only you have the ability to say if it is worth it,...
  16. Student Needs Surgery

I agree with others: your well-being comes first! This is such a tough situation to be faced with so close to the end of your program. Don't put yourself through more pain, and the daily potential of more damage - have the surgery as soon as you can...
  17. I wouldn't put all of your eggs in the Bay Area basket. If relocating is at all an option for you, that would be my #1 piece of advice. Look into the VA hospital system; they are federal and thus don't require you to get another state's license even ...
  18. Future Shortage in Bedside Nurses

I am a BSN new grad. It is true that many BSN's want to use bedside nursing as a stepping stone to management, or advanced practice. However, in my experience, there are just as many who entered nursing school to take care of people at the bedside as...
  19. Waiting after interview advice...the suspense

I would say to follow up on Monday (one week after they were supposed to notify you) if you haven't heard.
  20. Which has better pay?

To answer your question, hospitals pay better where I am (Northern California). I completely agree with Ashley about holding out for a hospital position. If the LTC has good working conditions/low turnover, I would seriously consider jumping for it!
  21. Waiting after interview advice...the suspense

The person you interviewed with did say "hopefully by Monday". I wouldn't take it as a bad sign at all that you haven't heard yet, as there could be many reasons. Remaining patient & positive is tough. Good luck!
  22. Student Clickers?

We used these in many nursing theory courses. Our professor would have multiple choice Q's interspersed frequently in lecture, and we would answer for participation points... Then someone would get called on to provide their thinking process/rational...
  23. Care plan books

During my program, I utilized "Prentice Hall Nursing Diagnosis Handbook". It has the NANDA approved diagnoses, NIC interventions, and NOC outcomes. I found it to be an excellent resource for getting started of building care plans for clinical.
  24. Where are new grads being hired right now?

I graduated May of 2012 in Norcal. Of my cohort of 85, there are 12 of us with jobs so far. Three are out of state. Of the other 9, all are in acute-care hospitals, one in LTC... all over the state. CA in general is pretty bleak, and the SF Bay Area ...
  25. Poll: I got my new grad job in...?
