This is really state/area dependent. I called the local hospitals and asked when they prefer for new grads to apply. Most preferred to receive applications for new grad internships by March- I graduated at the end of May. I was able to begin working ...

If you are planning on moving out of state soon, you may want to double check with the planned destination's BON to make sure that you will be eligible to be licensed in said state- If you might move before completing your RN to BSN. Might be a good ...
I have started to keep a little checklist that I carry through the shift. When I hear a new order or think of something that needs to be done, I add it to the list. I am working on ways to prioritize the list, but it is at least helping me from forge...
Sounds like burnout maybe? Have you been studying/answering questions every day? If so, maybe would taking a day off to do something completely different and non-nursing related help?

What about applying at a smaller hospital nearer Portland? Tuality, Salem, ect. Or another floor at the same facility? I'm with ya that telemetry floors are pretty stressful.

Also there are VA hospitals if you are interested in treating older veterans. Many of the vets on the floor where I work are still dealing with vietnam-related wounds and conditions.

I had a previous music degree with all the premedical coursework done. On top of that, I STILL had a full year of nursing prereqs. They want specific prerequisites regardless of degree. The only place that my previous degree really helped was once I ...

It would be about 25 miles, but the hospital provides free transit passes, so I take a bus + train trip. It's free, and I kind of just get to sit back and relax after work. Tons of other hospital ppl on the same commute, so it feels relatively safe.
I didn't take Kaplan, but I took the test a few days after graduation. I studied Saunders hard earlier in the year for the HESI exam, and kept doing questions off and on through graduation. I think I just felt ready at that point, and thought that wa...
I'm having tons of problems with this as a new grad. For me, peanut butter and crackers or granola bars seem to be good and require only the shortest trip to the employee breakroom.
smilin_gp replied to lpn2rnMay2005's topic in NCLEX
1. How many questions did you take on NCLEX? 75-pass 2. What study materials did you use? Did you take a test review course? I used the Saunders Comprehensive Review Book and CD. 3. Did your SON offer any testing (ERI, ATI, HESI)? HESI. 4. How long...

That sounds like a great plan :) I took the medical school prereqs while working on my mus. ed. degree. Still don't know why I did both at the same time. I decided on nursing during my final year and wanted to finish what I started. I still play with...
I feel sorrier for the dog of my SAHM neighbor who I have NEVER seen walked around the neighborhood. She spends all of her time in front of her house outside smoking and talking on the phone, says she doesn't believe in vet care, etc. I think that th...

Hmm.. I also have a degree in music education, but not the experience or credentials that you have. I transferred into a BSN program. I don't know what area of the country that you are in, but your pay is similar to starting pay for staff RN's in Por...
Linfield College has a year-and-a-half second degree accelerated program. Not sure what other schools have or if there are any shorter programs around here. Good luck!
Sometimes breed rescue groups have lists of available resources for dogsitters familiar with the breed. On days when my greyhound would otherwise be alone for over 8 hours, she stays with a lady who has 4 greyhounds and is great with the breed. This ...

Uggh. I'm not a psych nurse, but I worked in psych before and during most of nursing school. Horrible memories of being 1:1 with a client and having to watch the documentary "Supersize Me" from start to finish. Greasy food - not blood or vomit or spu...

I apparently wanted to become a doctor since I could talk. I then got a music education degree. I don't remember nursing having the same PR as medicine when I was growing up. It was just never brought up as an option to me until I had finished all of...
I am in my first month of nursing, and I am so clueless half of the time on my floor that at this point I can't imagine floating. In the hospital where I work, all nurses are required to float-there is no formal float pool- but they wait almost a yea...

I had a double degree in general science and music education. I still had to take every A & P and micro. The only prereqs my BSN let me 'out of' were biology for nursing and college algebra, as they counted higher level science classes in place o...
