  1. Sign on bonuses

When I graduated in 2011, I heard of a hospital in McAllen, TX offering $15,000 sign on bonus. Still not enough to make me move that close to the border lol
  2. Pregnant Nurse!

I was really exhausted back in October-ish, but its mostly passed now. I work nights and it never seemed to bother me at work... Just at home on my days off. It's much better now though!
  3. Pregnant Nurse!

Yep, June baby! Find out what it is on Wednesday! :)
  4. what did you get for Christmas from your employer?

I came to work on the 26th and had an Xmas card signed by our management staff and a mini candy cane. The techs got full sized candy canes, we got mini candy canes. lol
  5. Pregnant Nurse!

I'm 16 weeks also... Also not showing, but have already told my coworkers. I asked my Dr and she said pretty much the same thing... Universal precautions. And said try to avoid CMV pts. I asked specifically about shingles and she said if I've had chi...
  6. What kind of holiday bonus do you get?

Nada!! I'm off Christmas Eve and Christmas Day though, so I'm happy!
  7. Ours has our first name and last initial. I wouldn't mind though if it had both first and last on it.
  8. Curious about what your job offers

    1. Unpaid with FMLA. I did find out you can use short term disability if you have it, but I didn't know this until about 2 weeks after our open enrollment for benefits, so I missed out. I did talk to HR and they said to stretch out my PTO when the ...
  9. Two and a half week orientation?

Definitely not enough time.... I had 6 weeks and still felt very nervous on my own. I would have declined the position if they only gave me 2.5 weeks!
  10. RN's forced to do CNA work

I always welcome the night that we are short a CNA and nurses have to be one. That happened to me the first time a few weeks ago and I loved being able to get my stuff done, do charting on my vitals, and then just help out where needed. We do paper c...
  11. Name Badges Worn Backwards

Ours always turn around but the back card on our badges is about 2 inches longer than our ID and where it sticks out at the bottom it says RN real big on both sides. So the patients know we are an RN whether our badge is backwards or not. And my name...
  12. These days it's not even who you know anymore. When I was a new grad last summer I applied for several positions at a hospital where my mom has been a nurse for 30+ years. The anesthesiologists I worked for at the time (as a secretary, same hospital)...
  13. Is an Associate's degree a waste of time?

I graduated with an ADN and didn't find a job for 8-9 months because of it. Everywhere I applied wanted BSN nurses. I finally got a job at a smaller community hospital that was still hiring ADNs. I'm now working on my BSN so I can hopefully get on at...
  14. What is the nurse-patient ratio where you work?

I'm in Texas on a med/surg floor at night.... Typically our ratio is 5:1 or 6:1 (usually 6:1). But it's not unheard of to have 7:1 at night (I did the other night). We don't start out with 7, but if we keep getting admissions, usually 1-2 end up with...
  15. New Grad Pay in Texas?

I work med/surg at a smaller hospital in the DFW area. As a new grad, I started at 25/hr. And then I'm night shift, so that's an extra $4/hr, and then $6/hr weekend diff. Working a weekend night is pretty sweet pay for a new grad lol :)
  16. Say What??????!!!!!!!!!!

Just the other night, doing an admit for DX pancreatic mass. The lady kept saying something about a pantry... Finally she said "they told me I have a mass on my pantry" lol We also have a fairly regular pt that always asks for her "delilah" when she ...
  17. Postoperative vital signs frequency

    We do q15 min x 2, q30 min x 2, then q1 hour x 4.
  18. Working night shift, difficulty sleeping during the day!

I work 7p-7a so I can't sleep 12-7. I am usually in bed by 0830 and sleep until 1600-1630. I take 2 ibuprofen before going to sleep, I know it sounds silly but it helps my achy legs and relaxes me. And I have black out curtains in my bedroom so it's ...
  19. Which shift do you prefer, 7pm-7am or 7am-7pm and why?

    7p-7a, no doubt about it!
  20. 7p-7a Six nights a pay period VS. 23-07 Nine nights a pay period

I love 12 hour nights! Love having four nights off a week!
  21. Is it possible for a RN to work five 12 hr days?

I've worked 5 12-hour shifts in a row twice since I started and they just about kill me. It's usually a Friday-Tuesday and I have a few days off afterwards, but it's still not worth it. By that last shift I am so tired and burnt out. But it is doable...
  22. ACLS

I became ACLS certified right before my third semester of nursing school. You don't need your RN license to become certified.
  23. When do they get a return on investment?

For an 8 week orientation, my facility requires a 2-year contract or $6000 to break it. So I'm guessing for 8 weeks, it cost them about $6000 to train me. They break it down if I were to leave after a year, I'd owe them $3000. That's my hospital's po...
  24. Washing those scrubs?

I throw my scrubs in the hamper with the other clothes until I do laundry. Usually wash scrubs by themselves with warm water. I have 11, maybe 12 pairs. I don't have to wear a certain color so I have a wide variety. I usually buy a pair every time I...
  25. Need input from NIGHT SHIFT nurses

Completely agree with the meeting thing! I will have meetings at 1300, 1500, or 1600. Definitely not staying for any of those if I have to be back that night. As far as friendly things... Letting us self schedule. At least then we don't end up with ...
