Things to study: common procedures - what’s a CABG? What kind of valves do we replace most often? What are the common complications or emergencies that can arise from these procedures? What are important things to assess on a post op patient? medications: what drips are most commonly used? What will raise a blood pressure? What lowers it? What about anti arrhythmics? speaking of: what does a-fib look like? What rhythms are an emergency? What’s the difference between a temporary epicardial pacemaker and a permanent pacemaker? What does a STEMI look like and if you suspect one, what should you do? what’s a swan? Does this unit use a lot of them? What might the numbers tell you about your patient? what’s a balloon pump? What about ECMO or impella? Which patients might need these things? Does your unit place durable ventricular assist devices? What kind of patient might get one of those? Just a few things to get you started!

I was already living on my own by the senior year of my BSN program. Had my own apartment the first two years I was a nurse (no roommate) then bought a house. Had about 24k in loans I paid off in 4ish years. Low cost of living area, obviously. I made the NICU to adult ICU switch. IV skills are a lot different. That’s the extent of the “big people skills” I felt I was at a disadvantage in. Otherwise, sure, there were new things to learn, but isn’t that the point of switching specialties? To learn something new?

Depends upon what else you’re running — I would avoid putting them in line with anything I might bolus (insulin, sedation...) if at all possible. Of course, if all you have is a 22 in the thumb while you’re waiting on the docs to throw in a line, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I’m an ECMO nurse in a CTICU, and an ECMO primer/educator in another role. I don’t have any formal specialty certification for it though — who offers it? I just have CCRN, and ACLS/PALS. Taking CSC soon. I thought about perfusion for a bit too, but after shadowing a bypass case in the OR I decided I liked the craziness of the ICU a lot better. I’d recommend shadowing if you can!

I work two jobs in the same system with the blessing of both managers and the scheduling in my situation is a nightmare. I can’t imagine trying to do it between two positions where the managers aren’t trying to make it work on your behalf.

I don’t think your question about patient population was odd either. There’s a big difference between a unit where a majority of moms come in with birth plans expecting a certain kind of experience, and a hospital where moms may be more likely to want an epidural, to bottle feed, etc.

I can be as “cheap and easy” as it comes, post entirely nude shots on my Instagram and Snapchat and still not deserve to be sexually harassed, assaulted or raped. Stop blaming women for men not respecting us.

Haha nothing special! ICU staff nurse across four different units. I get paid extra for some ECMO expertise and my hospital pays a generous amount to experienced ICU nurses to keep us at the bedside. I pick up a little overtime here and there.

I make $90k working three days a week while wearing elastic waist pants. I leave my job at the door when I leave. I can do pretty much anything for 12 hours and then it's done. I get to be an expert at some awesome technology. Some days I don't even get pooped on.

Stuff like this makes you sound very stable and normal, especially when we're talking about such controversial partisan positions like "we should make sure guns are stored in places where children can't find them and accidentally kill themselves or others." Lordy. Anyway, as nurses we also have a role in caring for patients experiencing domestic violence and identifying and assisting patients in these types of relationships. Unfortunately, women in an abusive relationship are -five times- more likely to be killed if their abuser owns a gun (Jacquelyn C. Many of the recent perpetrators of mass shootings have a history of actual abuse or desire to harm women - Elliot Rodger killing six in California after leaving behind a rambling YouTube video about how he planned to punish women for not sleeping with him (and inspiring a depressing number of copycat "incel" acts of violence); Scott Beierle killing two women and wounding four more at a yoga studio in Tallahassee after a history of arrests for groping and harassment and a series of YouTube videos expressing his hatred for women and desire to kill a particular woman who rejected him: Stephen Paddock killing 58 and wounding more than 500(!), noted to be verbally abusive in public to his girlfriend; Devin Patrick Kelley who killed 26 (including eight members of one family) and wounded 20 after a court martial and imprisonment for abusing his wife and child and a domestic dispute with his mother-in-law - look, I can go on, but this is getting depressing. We can no longer afford to ignore the link between misogyny, domestic abuse, and violence against women.

I'm sure that the nurse was rushed or distracted and many factors lined up to cause this error but... Every dose of every paralytic I've ever given came out of a vial with very large "PARALYZING AGENT" on the top, side, and lid of the vial, as well as a distinct neon yellow color on the labels.

So funny you say this because I just inhaled a facefull of crushed atorvastatin last night. Blech. No sneezes but a horrrrrrible taste in my mouth.
